| Strong Thoughts.....Though Once In A While.... |

Today I was reading through the bio data form, which an aspiring candidate had filled up , to seek admission to a B-School. It contained a question ‘How do you define success?’ Well, this is a fairly common question typically asked in many interviews. He had written a lot of fundas, what a typical MBA guy would write. I was wondering why does he want to pursue his MBA if he already possessed the skill to give fundas outright! He had used eye-catching adjectives and powerful statements – a perfect combination for preparing pamphlets! Apart from the regular fundas, two things really caught my attention:
First, he had written that for him success doesn’t include the materialistic things like money, status and position. Secondly, he had quoted some verse from Arthshastra and said a lot about family values and virtues.
Well, everything is fit and fine. It’s wrong to always think that this person wants to give fundas or just wants to make his writing look flowery. But, tell me one thing: if an ordinary person comes and talks about virtues and values, who the hell is going to listen to him or value his thoughts? But, if the same things were to be said by some person like Narayan Murty or by that matter Buddha himself, then all would listen.
I feel that being prudent or practical in approach towards life is more important. Just by telling or declaring that money, status, or position is not important won’t fetch us anywhere. Infact, if this was to be told in a B-School interview, then the interviewers would surely ask that person to go to Himalayas and become a saint rather than doing a MBA. This is all a matter of practicality. Even to help the country or for that matter even the family members/friends, one must surely have money, status and position. No point telling that we must sacrifice every thing. Greed is a different thing and necessity is a different thing. And before saying that these things are not necessary, one must prove that from his own life example. Else who will listen or believe? And the way one considers money, status or position as is also important. These things are like 'hygine factors'. When they are there, one doesnt feel the greatness. Once they are gone, the need/greatness is felt. One need not consider these things as materialistic at all.
PS: I guess now that I am giving fundas…nevertheless, every dog has its day!
