i'm at the office now, and from where i'm sitting i can hear the band of buskers playing near raffles city mrt. i'm snacking incessently on jollibean pancakes, and it's actually lunch break now but i'm staying behind because !!! case files are exciting, the room is nice and cold, and the buskers sound pretty good from up here.

anyway, i really like the work culture here, and the fact that i do surprises me. my mum detests lawyers and is still trying to convince me that lawyers are nasty people-- she often has to give expert witness on the stand for kids who have been abused/raped, etc, and is always grilled by the criminal lawyers for the accused, even when it's obvious what has happened, and even though it's traumatising for the child. but ultimately, everyone has the right to a fair trial and to have their case heard.

today i went to the new supreme court-- it's AMAZINGLY GORGEOUS and modern and just shocking. i expected it to be like the sub courts, but this was like... nothing i've ever seen before, really. i wasn't dressed in court attire and i had to follow my mentor along (she had to submit an amendment to a summons). everyone must've thought i was an accused person/witness, because i just trailed her around. i also saw this scary indian criminal lawyer who is always in the papers for defending people accused of terrible crimes-- it's my second time seeing him in person and staring at him, actually, and i remember he had more hair (and looked less like an alcoholic) the last time.

i also realised to my disappointment that the flying saucer thing is ...NOT TRUE! the lawyers who told me about it really did a good job of making me fall for that-- we were up on the 24th floor and from where we stood, the topmost floor of the supreme court really looked like a spaceship. and i wouldn't be surprised if someone DID decide to build something like that. anyway the spaceship-dome thing actually houses the court of appeals, which is surrounded by the chief justice's chambers, etc.
