my really nice boss (click) the definition of IMPRESSIVE (!!!!!)=
B.A. (Hons), Oxford University (UK, 1992); M.A. (2001) LL.M., Harvard Law School ( USA, 1996) Barrister of England & Wales (1993) Advocate & Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore (1994) Attorney-at-Law of the state of New York (1996)
today was action-packed, and tomorrow is going to be even more exciting! it's only been a day but i'm already liking the atmosphere at d&n a lot. it's a bit scary sometimes, but everyone's so chatty-- even the random lawyers you bump into on your way down in the lift, the secretaries, etc. and i get a thrill whenever i get an email (priya.dershini_(insertmylastnamehere)@drewnapier.com!). i even sent a blank mail to that address from my usual email address to test if it was real. and hooray, it was! the place is massive; there are over 400 people working there. i'm working in the litigation department (the boss above = the director of the litigation floor), which also deals with company law, shipping law and a lot of other things. i have a good impression of the company already. the only bad thing is that my desk is right next to this secretary's, and she swears non-stop and keeps talking to her boyfriend (and me sometimes). it's very distracting. also, i don't have a view at all because my desk faces a lawyer's room, and that lawyer always leaves the door closed. so essentially, i just sit there facing a wall. i can't even use the internet because everything i do can be seen easily. thank goodness everyone i've met so far has been friendly.
somehow i ended up being coerced by three lawyers on my floor to do a lot of work. i was terribly bored from 11am to around 4pm, so bored in fact, that i ran all the way to the coffee bean 10 minutes away just to nick a free magazine to read. and then all of a sudden i was overloaded. my poor mentor (she's really sweet/gentle) kept telling the other lawyers not to bully me, haha. i ended up having to stay an hour overtime, and tomorrow i'm going to be working with this guy who is doing his pupillage and needs a lot of help regarding a 'very exciting case which has all the elements of just about everything'. i'm supposed to read this huge textbook which is over 400 pages long, and it's on...insolvency law, how uhh, sexy, and well, NO WAY (i can't even figure out the citations). anyway the place is swarming with interns and people doing clerkships and internships and attachments and just about everything. and there's a lounge where alcohol is FREE and there's a pool table, karaoke station, ONE vending machine, etc.
(p.s. did you know the dome on the roof of the supreme court is a real-life flying saucer? the chief justices and all the important people stay there, and in case of emergencies/disasters, they are whisked away in the sky!)
anyway on my way back home today at around 7pm i was harassed by a really skinny guy on the train. it was terrifying and i wanted to get off at every stop instead of at my destination, but decided to just ignore him because he looked much, much smaller than an average man--like a woman, almost. he kept pointing at the book i was reading, and mumbling to me nonstop, and peering over my shoulder, and moving closer as i kept moving away. he kept tapping my wrist and sticking his head in front of my face when i refused to respond. when the guy on my right got off, the retard quickly hopped over before i could move away from him, and trapped me from the other side. he kept pointing at my bag and saying it was open, and then he kept pointing to my book and asking if it was good. the worst thing is, no one else on the train even tried to stop him even though it was full of people, some of whom clearly saw what he was doing. he stuck his hand in front of me and made a thumbs-up sign and kept showing his teeth like an imbecile. he even ran his fingers over some of the lines while i totally ignored him...the cheek!! the whole time he kept fidgeting and putting his bag on the floor and then picking it up. and then finally, he disappeared, much to my relief, after an unnerving, hellish 30 minutes.
the scariest thing is, apart from the things he did, he didn't even really seem to have an autistic spectrum disorder/be mentally challenged. i wish i could have said for sure.
