Greetings from the 35th floor of the Empire State Building!
I have a good view of the Statue of Liberty from here. That's rather appropriate, given my current job. I'm not researching US immigration right now though. I'm researching Turkish migration to Germany, in particular so that Beth can write the story of a ten-year old whose father is recruited by the West German steel industry and they have to move from a village west of Ankara to the Ruhr.
Quick Deutschkei [Deutschland+Turkei] fact:
Did you know that Döner Kebab (the Turkish equivalent of shawarma or a gyro) is the most popular fast food in Germany? More people eat it than local sausages, pizza, or American fast food. Many Germans also swear it is the cure to a hangover.
Quick absurd question:
Can Turks' preference to migrate to Germany be explained not so much by colonial or historical ties (like Indians in the UK and Algerians in France), but by the fact that German and Turkish both use umlauts? Specifically lots of ös and üs
