This week we met with the mother of the baby we were considering adopting. After the meeting I started to think--a rather rare occurance as I keep my brain for emergency use only--and I am having a difficult time accepting the fact that we should not adopt that baby. We have the means to help the mother keep her baby and she really does want to raise her daughter herself. She will be a good mother, the way she is already taking care of that baby. She just needs some help to get started and one of those would be a good part time job. And Conan just offered that to her in the new Budapest office. So she can already work there a few weeks before the baby is born, becoming eligible for a small apartment paid for by the company and then she can bring the baby to work when she is 6 weeks old.
You know, I am an adoptee. I was thinking about all those hard times I had trying to find my own identity, my roots, the struggles I had not being like my parents and the desire to know who my "real" parents were. And I saw the love in this young woman, the love and concern she already felt for her child and the longing to raise her. We took her--her name is Mari--out to lunch and exchanged phone numbers. That was what.... Wednesday. Then on Thursday she came to see us and she was there when Conan came over asking me to reword an advertisement to recruit new employees. And at that very moment it turned out that she has all the qualifications that were needed. So yes, we saved some money on the advertisement. Yes, we will keep in touch with her. And yes, we are continuing our quest for a baby.
