Yippee

I'm still cranky ( I haven't been sleeping well.) BUT.... oh joy of joys, I get to see Eddie Izzard in 2 weeks AND THEN in another five days I get to see BEN FOLDS. Very exciting stuff. So, you know, YAY! Also bertie got our tickets for Trilogy Tuesday already so... SCORE. I should be more excited, but I'm too bogged down by the present and immediate future.

I know I'm way behind on my Angel commentary... I'll get there.

So those guys in black... every time they came on screen I was like "hey, it's the Initiative!" And that one guy was a little too Riley Finn for me. Actually as bertie pointed out, he was a little too Graham.

Hee hee, Angel spanks guys.

wheee- spoilery if, you know, you haven't read *any* spoilers for Angel

Okay so when I saw James Martsers in the opening credits I got all giggly and nearly missed half the show. Gotta say Harmony wasn't as bad as I was afraid she would be. And the ending? Yeah. That's good. Harmony is *funny*.

The Dawn rant- warning: all very spoilery for season 5 and beyond

This rant started growing in my head after seeing a bunch of Dawn-bashing comments. In fact a lot of this is copied from my comment to the same post (on lj).

I like the character, her existence I mean. I've often hated her behavior, but you know what, 14 year old girls are not fun to be around if you're not one. I know I was a hell of a brat. The thing that makes me saddest about Dawn is we just barely got to see her mature a little, but her thread was really dropped at the end there (As was Anya's, don't get me started.)

I love the scene in - I forget the title of the ep now, the one where they do the spell and Andrew becomes the voice of the bringer, is that Touched?- anyway, Dawn is talking about some spell she read in its original language and Willow mentions that she read a translation of it... Dawn's face and the whole "There's a translation!?... I'm over it." Season 5 or 6 Dawn didn't get over things. Season 7 Dawn was starting to grow up and we never got to see it.

Anyway, I'm all for Dawn-bashing, but keep in mind that her brattiness is the primary reason her relationship with Buffy worked. It was realistic.

I mean, who wants to be raised by their older sister, who happens to be gorgeous superhero? And then Buffy started having her own emotional issues (which she was entitled to) but that really affected Dawn.

At first it was normal teenage angsty stuff, but then she found out she wasn't real- who wouldn't freak out, then her mom died- I've been through that one and I was no picnic I'm sure, and then Buffy died- can you imagine! And doesn't even cover Glory! Then they brought Buffy back but she was off even before they knew what was wrong, then Tara dies, then Spike (her idol) shatters her image of him not once but twice (sleeping with Anya, then the attack on Buffy and leaving), Willow goes psycho-- and this is all before she starts high school!

Her high school is on the hellmouth, one of her friends (Cassie) dies, oh- did we mention her sister is now working there!!

I think the thing is we hardly ever saw a happy Dawn. Who's fun to be around when they're not happy?

Like I said, her behavior often annoyed the crap out of me too, but I think it was supposed to. Again, it's Buffy's show, not Dawn's and I think Dawn was there to give Buffy a home life- after all Joyce was about to die.

Without Dawn, everything's different in season 6. Buffy would have had even less reason to stick it out and out on a happy face. She would have had less financial worries etc. So a lot of that angst wouldn't have a place.

And as for the people who don't like MT as actress, ok, sometimes she's weak. But I think that's mostly because the existing core was so strong. And if you want proof of her talent, text ) I have six words for you: "I made you some tea, Mom." Creepy. creepy

icon credit, the sequel

So I have a question for all the icon makers... How do I credit someone in a different journal? If I snag an icon from someone on lj, and then want to use the icon in my blurty, is the lj username enough? Someone else may have that user name so it'd be like I was crediting a different person. I don't think I've gotten icons from anyone anywhere but lj, but at this point I can't be sure.

So here's the thing. If you see one of your icons being used in one of my journals with no credit, improper credit or misleading credit, and you care at all- please let me know and I will be more than happy to fix it.

Thanks. I love the icon makers of the world.

If I am using one of your icons without proper credit, please let me know. I have so many journals sometimes I mix up where I got the icons from or who created them. Especially since a user name doesn't necessarily mean anything on a different journal site. So let me know & I'll credit you properly.

At long last...

This weekend I visited bertie and I finally bought the DVD of The Two Towers. Rock on! First off, how is it that all these guys are so damn hot? I mean I wasn't that into Eomer, but Karl Urban is hot. Really hot. He has the best line in any of the special features.

Also, We noticed that apparently the shot of Aragorn pushing the doors open into Helm's Deep is the shot of the movie. It is included in more than half the featurettes and I think all the longer features. It's the tag for the featurette on Gandalf- He has nothing to do with that featurette! Although I'm totally not complaining, because dirty Aragorn is hot

And of course there's the Legolas float-flip thingy onto the horse. Holy hell is that hot.

BTW, for anyone who hasn't seen it, the previews for the TTT EE and RotK are totally worth renting the DVD themselves.

I freakin' love this movie.

You're Anya!
You are Anya, the literal but funny ex-demon from
Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

While others may have trouble saying what they
mean, you seem to be able to speak your mind
naturally, as if it's no trouble at all! Be
careful, though... it's a gift that can have
its drawbacks! You seem to have trouble with
relationships, as they don't seem to last long.
You surprise many people. You seem to be
cruel and uncaring at first glance, but you
have a deeper side to you that you don't seem
to let anyone see. Always cheerful and
optimistic, it takes a whole lot to bring you
down.

Wow

This was emailed to me by bertie and I just had to post it. I think the author is Saber Shadowkitten, one of my favorite fanfic authors.

BTVS/ATS and The Pitfalls of The TV Medium

It's an incredibly well-thought-out, well-written essay on both shows and certain decisions that have been made along the way. It's very spoilery for everything that has aired in the Buffyverse (and a few other shows as well) so don't read unless you've seen all 7 & 4 seasons. But no spoilers for Angel season 5.

The aforementioned Willow Rant

Okay, so here's my rant on Willow... intermittently spoilery so consider yourself warned.

Willow is a spoiled brat.

Somehow, when she learned magic she got it into her head that she should never not get her way again. Let's examine the evidence.

Season Three- "I shouldn't have these feelings for Xander, it's dangerous to my relationship with Oz"-- enter the delusting spell... (it doesn't matter that she didn't get to complete it, she would have.)

Season Four, "I'm mad at Oz, I'll do a spell", "I miss Oz, I'll do a spell." Come on- she had the audacity to think that she shouldn't have to suffer a broken heart.

Season Five- Okay, I was totally with her on going after Glory

Season Six- I still maintain that a part of her brought Buffy back just to see if she could. Or to prove that she could. She was already way on the power trip at that point. And then of course, IMO the WORST thing Willow (or any BTVS character) ever did- the spell on Tara. That's just sick and wrong and twisted beyond the telling of it. And I never felt like it was ever dealt with. Tara loved her so much that they reconciled without ever dealing with it. And then she tried to bring Tara back.

Season Seven- No major examples, because mostly she was very cautious and was afraid of it getting away from her again. But she was never really tested. Willow still never really lived through something horrible and painful without at least trying to fix it with magic. Except that Xander still only has one eye. (Tangent: Does anybody else think it's odd that no one suggested that Willow try to fix Xander's eye- I really thought Anya would say it.)

Okay- here's the thing: Willow was not addicted to magic, she was addicted to power and it started way before season 6. The magic became an issue when she couldn't control it anymore. Separate thing.

Also, it's not just Willow.... There's a reason there's so much fanfic that starts with Willow did a spell... The other characters went to her almost as often as she did it herself. I still can't get over how in OAFA Xander and Anya tried to talk her into doing a spell to get them out. It's like they wanted her on a leash- Good Willow, do the spell for Xander. Now sit. I loved how Xander says somethng like we got you through it before, we'll get you through it again. First of all-- how did Xander (or anybody else) get her through it? And Second, how do you know what happens if she goes down that road again?

I don't want this to come off as Willow-hating. I love Willow. I think she's had possibly the most interesting character development on the show. But she's another example of the double and triple standards of the Buffyverse. The rules are different for Willow.

Well, I've lost my point, so I'll probably end up commenting on my own post later. But I got the beginning down. Willow is a spoiled brat. A really powerful spoiled brat. But she's still a wicked cool character.

Just felt like blurting

'cause it's been like 2 weeks.

Anyway... I was thinking the other day (I've been known to do that from time to time) and I've decided to finally put down my Xander rant. You see I have a very love/hate relationship with that chracter, always have.

Here's the thing- Xander is incredibly judgemental. He's always all over everyone else for what he perceives as their mistakes. Sometimes he's very right. Sometimes he's very wrong. But most importantly, he never seems to learn from his own mistakes or even to acknowledge them.

The biggest Xander gaff, and about 80% of the reason I could never get completely behind him, is his lie to Buffy in Becoming... i won't say what it is in case you haven't seen it- and if you have seen it you know what I'm talking about. Sometimes I still can't believe he said that. Not only was it an outright lie that may have changed everyone's lives, but it was so totally not his place to make decisions about what Buffy should and shouldn't know.

But it starts before that.... in WTTH when he overhears Buffy & Giles talking about her slayer-ness , disbelief is to be expected. He can even decide that they're both crazy. But he takes it a step too far... he confronts someone he's know for about 30 seconds and tells her she's insane and needs help.

He never wants to acknowledge the parallels between Anya and Angel or Spike, because that would mean budging on his opinion. He never wants to give up on Willow, 'cause, hey- it's Willow. And don't get me wrong, he shouldn't have.... but he'd never shown that kind of compassion to anyone else in that position.

Also, I STILL cannot believe he told Dawn about the "incident." That was SO not his place. Especially since he knew nothing. By the time Xander gets to Buffy, it's over... there's no evidence of what happened and Buffy doesn't confirm or deny anything. He assumes what happens. Fine, he made a damn good guess, but to go to Dawn with that without confirmation from Buffy? That wasn't about protecting Dawn, it was about getting her on his side. Not to mention(I forget who first pointed it out) Xander himself attacks Buffy in The Pack, without any of the history or confusion that's there in Seeing Red. (PS- don't think I'm excusing what happened, or almost happened, i'm just pointing out that Xander has little room to point fingers here.)

What else? Well, I think that covers the hate side. And even though I'm very adamant about it, it doesn't dominate my opinion of him. Overall I still love that character. I always loved the Xander/Cordy relationship. He's great with Dawn (except see above) and generally the most reliable character on the show.

So here endeth my Xander rant.

Up next? The Willow Rant. Stay tuned.

Okay, so I'm trying not to freak out that the DVD for TTT comes out in a few weeks. But I can't wait. I'm so totally excited. Also, I keep reminding myself that even though I'm crawling out of my skin to see it, the real treat comes in November when the extended version hits.

In other "I'm so impatient I should be sedated" news, I'm starting to get really psyched for Spike showing up on Angel this season. I can't wait to see how/why/what, you know. I just hope he's not evil again, b/c as fun as evil Spike is it makes the show lame. I've heard that it's official that Spike will be in all 22 eps. So if he's evil, but he's around all year that means the AI gang can't get rid of him. And that's lame. How long can a villain survive before the tension gets lost. I mean, look at all your multi-ep Buffy villains... There was always a sucker punch... we usually found out who the villains were long before the Scoobies (unless we got sucker punched too) So any villain that stuck around for more than 2 eps, it was usually b/c they didn't know who the villain was.

Anyway, I guess I should be working, right?

Okay, so I just read that Orlando Bloom is being considered for the role of Gambit in the 3rd X-Men movie. I don't know how I feel about this because I was so dead-set on it being James Marsters.

However, since Gambit should be in a relationship with Rogue, I guess I would feel a little icky if JM was playing opposite Anna Paquin. Although if they don't go with that love story, it doesn't matter. And I *do* love Orlando Bloom, bertie can tell you how much I love Orlando. Mmmm, Legolas (pardon me while I wipe up the drool).

Anyway, just thought I'd throw that out there. Here's the link: http://www.thezreview.co.uk/news/news1101.htm.

Lord of the Rings

Okay, seriously... I have this dilemna. The theatrical release DVD of TTT comes out next month & I don't know whether or not to buy it. I know I *have* to get the extended release at the end of the year (never mind that the Buffy Season 5 & Firefly box sets will also be coming out within weeks of it). I can't figure out if I'm enough of a geek to have to get both versions.

PLUS I don't have the theatrical release of FotR and I'm totally anal about this kind of stuff, if I get the theatrical release of TTT I have to go back & get the theatrical release of FotR. And I'll have to get both versions of RotK, so when it's all said and done I'll have 2 versions of each. And I'm convinced that there'll be a box set, which of course I will want.

So... I'm totally in love with this movie. It is ridiculously well done. I mean it never drops the ball. Never. Now, I know that some fans of the book are miffed about certain things. Okay, I get that. But that doesn't take away from the fact the movie is phenomenal. The books and the movies have to be different because not everything translates from print to visual.

And have you ever seen such beautiful men? Something for everyone. Blond, blue-eyed Legolas or Dark, rugged Aragorn? How about an array of sweet, adorable hobbits? And let's not forget Boromir, I think he suffers by comparison to Aragorn, but he's still quite manly in his own right. And no, I haven't forgotten Gimli, I'm just not into that much facial hair.

LotR rules on every score-- speaking of score, the score rules. Howard Shore is awesome. Amazing. Just wow.

OOh, gotta go. Blurt more later.
