From: Wayne McCormack Subject: IDP Offer of Admission Date: 2/23/05 10:01PM
Dear IDP Applicant,
Please forgive the impersonal e-mail message. I had to go out of town for three days, so I am behind on getting letters of offer in the mail. With our next interview date coming up on Monday, I probably won't get them out until next week. I just wanted to let you know that you definitely will be getting a letter offering you Fall 2005 admission to the IDP. I'll get the letters out in the mail as soon as possible next week. Thanks for your patience. Congratulations! We look forward to seeing you with us in August!
Sincerely yours,
Wayne T. McCormack, Ph.D. Associate Dean for Graduate Education Interdisciplinary Program (IDP) in Biomedical Sciences University of Florida College of Medicine website: http://idp.med.ufl.edu

6:08 pm - PSA, for my nerves
|
1. No, I don't know how my interviews went. I think that they went well, but really the College of Medicine does not care what I think. Only what my interviewers think.
2. Yes, I really hope to get in and I should find out sometime next week. If I have not said anything by next Friday, PLEASE do NOT ask me about it. Either it means that I was rejected or I haven't heard (let's hope for the latter, if that is the scenario).
3. Thanks for all the support!! I couldn't have gotten through it without you guys.
4. My back up plan: Live off of Stephen's loans. Just Kidding. Find a job. Anyone looking for a lab tech if I don't get in?

10:05 pm - State of the Union
|
Thoughts: -The president got booed...twice. -Someone watching the state of the union is wearing fishnets -Get the man a f*cking thesaurus, I'm tired of the words: freedom and liberty and terror. -Why does only half of Congress (or the people sitting up front) give standing ovations? -What the h*ll is that symbol they're making with their hands again? -And this game: http://www.drinkinggame.us/ is a bit rough to play -"F*cking First Lady"--Jenn -Iraq is mentioned a lot during this bloody speech
I'll write more later to sum this up!

1.) There's a reason I have my coffee habit.
2.) It's official! I finally got the call this morning! I've got an interview at UF's Interdisciplinary Program (my 1st choice). Now is the time for me to brush up on the latest AD research & therapies. Then, in another week or so, it'll be time for me to start researching my interviewers. Yay!!!

4:02 pm - 2004 Recap (obligatory)
|
The year 2004 started and ended the same way: with me worrying about professor recommendation forms. This year it was Dr. Keaffaber and not Dr. Stewart. That was about where the similarities ended, though. I began this year fully expecting to go far, far away. Instead I ended this year wanting to stay close to home. 2004 was a very interesting year indeed. I moved up in the rankings. I entered into a religious debate with a couple of people (leading to recontacting an old friend), single handedly denounced Valentine’s Day (And, consequently had the best Valentine’s Day ever), ran away to mexico, had to eat crow, worked on overcoming hardship, got a degree, a friend finally moved home (!), became a business major, some things stayed the same, had four hurricanes hit the state of Florida, everyone had an opinion about the elections, started a New Year.

11:26 am - And it’s time to start another new year…
|
with an Update!!! (I know how much everyone has been waiting for one) I’ll start with the big events of the break.
Christmas Eve: Had a technical Christmas Day dinner (Stephen’s step-mom was on call Christmas day, so they improvised). Stephen’s grandparents came over and we did “Christmas” with them. Went to Christmas Eve Mass (the Episcopalian VersionTM).
Christmas Day: Woke up at before unknown hour (8:30am) to open presents. Opened presents (got some nice ones, btw). Ate breakfast (Yay! for pancakes!). Watched the last two movies in the Lord of the Rings series and the behind-the-scenes featurettes.
Day after Christmas: Woke up even earlier (6am), drove to Kissimmee, opened presents, left for airport, and flew to Salt Lake City.
Next three days: Skied
Day before New Year’s Eve: Came home, went out with Erin and Ryan to Scary Steak & Shake.
New Year’s Eve: Went to Japanese Steak House with Dad. Stephen got sick and went to sleep. Bought Champagne w/ Dad. Cancelled on Erin and Ryan, but they came over to say hi!
New Year’s Day: Had to cancel on Eric (sorry!) because Stephen was sick (still!). Went to Nana and Papa’s for a while. Opened presents. Came home.
January 2, 2005: Drove back to Gainesville (finally!)
And that’s it. Those are my highlights of my break. I’ll tell any funny stories later!

10:51 pm - Special Pre-Christmas Update
|
For those of you who read this blog I figured I'd update and you all can laugh at my misfortune. So, here is the past week and half in a nut shell: Monday 12/13: Took Organizational Behavior Final in the evening Tuesday 12/14: Took Managerial Accounting Final in the evening [read: spent the past two days studying] Wednesday 12/15: Went to work, ran errands with Rici (including adding stuff to registry and, my favorite, Borders), threw annual Christmas Party at my house (informal ornament exchange) Thursday 12/16: Went out to lunch with Jenn and took her to the airport. Friday 12/17: Went to work Saturday 12/18: Went Christmas Shopping with Nikki. We bought (most) everyone's gift in about 6 & 1/2 hours. This includes driving all over Gainesville to find said gifts. Sunday 12/19: Ran more errands (bought new outfit at the Limited, yay for gift certificates!). Went to Indiatlantic to visit Stephen's family. Monday 12/20: Went to mall (which is smaller than Gainesville's mall... and that's saying something). Came home and read. Tuesday 12/21: Hung out and chilled. Wednesday 12/22 (Today): Ran errands in morning and couldn't hold down solid (or liquid) food for the entire afternoon. So, not only did I get to re-taste lunch and breakfast, but any sort of water I took the entire day! Imagine, if you will, the mortification I experienced. Here I am at my future in-laws house, puking my guts out. I couldn't eat dinner (which they cooked) and pretty much stayed in Kate's room all day (I'm sure she's thrilled about that! But for the record I made it to the bathroom each and every time) The plus side is that I survived and at about 10pm tonight I had water and toast. That has lasted in my stomach for about 50 minutes. So, that's a good sign, right? Anyhow, I hope that those of you miserable at home will laugh at my misfortune and remember... at least you only have one family!

11:01 am - On a quest...
|
In order to avoid doing actual school work this is what I've done this morning:
-Emailed my boss to see if I actually had to come into work -Watched GMA to see if they'd give out any clues as to the future plot of "Desparate Housewives" -Decided that I needed a second cup of coffee -Stopped and talked to a construction worker along 16th ST to discern WTF they're doing (He said that they were just clearing the land and the next phase was still up in the air) -Got to work, checked my email -Went to Central Stores and chatted with the clerk there (and bought ethanol) -Discussed the past weekend with fellow procrastinators at work -Checked my email -Chatted with boss about weekend -Read the alligator -Checked my email -Read everyone's blog/live journal. -Read the sidebars of everyone's blog -Organized my week -Checked my email -Emailed back a few people -Contemplated doing dishes (alas! There are only a few in the sink, not enough) -Looked at the class webpage -Looked at the program's webpage -Thought about getting coffee -Realized it was too close to lunch and decided to wait -Checked my email -Updated my blog
Any other ideas?

9:22 am - You know, Shakespeare wrote a play about your life?
|
Well, it's the day before Thanksgiving. And I'm feeling rather accomplished. I have finished my applications for grad school, my statement of purpose, and I know that at least two of the profs I requested letters from will have them done by the end of November (at the very latest December 15th). So, they'll be ready to go once I'm back from break. And I've finished all my major projects and tests. So, there's nothing left until the week of the 13th.
Other than that... not much. I'm still in school, still working, and that's about it. Nothing too terribly exciting. No drama (but give that a couple of days). No work (but give that a couple of days). No nothing. However, it could be worse, it could be that I have a bunch of bad things happening! Well, I'm done rambling. Nothing clever in this post (not that that's unusual). Bye!

3:11 pm - New Habits
|
It takes 21 days to form a new habit... just in time for Christmas! 1. Do the dishes after every meal. 2. Make my lunch 3x a week for school/work. 3. Do one unpleasant task each day.
Let's see how long that'll last!

4:23 pm - How?
|
How can people just not care? How can you not care until it directly affects you? If something happens to one of us, it happens to all of us.
"First they came for the Communists, and I didn’t speak up, because I wasn’t a Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn’t speak up, because I wasn’t a Jew. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn’t speak up, because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me, and by that time there was no one left to speak up for me."
by Rev. Martin Niemoller, 1945
Women's Rights, Gay Rights, Poverty, Welfare, Seniors Rights, Disabled People's Rights, Veteran's Rights. These are all things that you should care about. Why? Because it all concerns people's rights. We are Americans. If we fail to protect each other, who do we have left?
---------------- After reading some people's blogs, I would like to assert:
Moral violations, huh? Look at his children. Read his policies. Know his history. Your religion is not America. America is lucky to have freedom of speech and thought *and* religion.
