Chilly - definitely not the way to go
I was dismayed as Zhou Chuan Xiong Concert 2004 started off with three songs I've never heard before. Not that I'm an avid fan of Xiao Gang. It was more of a disappointment in his voice quality, and the lack of connection between him and the audience.

However, as the night dwelt on, I realised it wasn't his voice that's bad. It's the band that got too heavy on bass that muffled his diction. ZCX still delivered when it mattered the most... his trademark Wasayaki and huang hun. Generally, the quality of his voice was emphasized when less instruments were used. And he is still him. The CD-quality voice despite a live band and a luke warm audience.

I think the audience finally melted when he talked about huang hun as the turning point in his life. Before he started on the song, he explained how he wanted to give up when his albums no longer sold well. That song turned his life around... reignited his passion in making good music, and how he never gave up in his 15-year career. He cried during the song.. and aw~ you could really feel the audience connecting with him, cheering him on.

In the last couple of songs, he redeemed whatever that he failed to deliver in the first hour. When it closed at 11pm, I left with this thought:

Passion is what carries you on, when all other things fail.

    Current Mood: sleepy
