how about a positive update With all that's been going on I figured let's try a positive update, or at least let's start it out that way.
Regular karaoke night for me was last night. I was leaving my place when Anita pulled up in her car, she said to me "ooh hey buddy you want a ride"? of course I did, lol. She got off work, changed at work and came over to pick me up. It was a nice surprise.
We walked in together, she actually put my hand into hers as we walked in. saw my sister bowling for her team and knew i'd see her when she was done. we walked into the bar where the karaoke was happening and alot of my friends, and acouple of her best friends were there. after all the introductions to each other we took over a section of the bar. Her friends had seen me sing at the Showboat and remembered when I was talking to anita for the first time saturday night. One friend of hers is from Brazil (Like anita is), and the other is from Gary, Indiana. we all after a bit just clicked with different convsersations going, watching people sing, etc.
My best friend Tim was cautious about mentioning what happened with me and Debbie over the weekend, and I told him, "don't worry about it, anita knows all about it so we all can talk about it". We did and I'm glad anita doesn't post where I'm at because she really wants to go off on debbie for everything she's done. she let her opinions known and there was alot of "whoa! oooo's ". coming after she went off. 16 years of her living in chicago she sure learned how to mouth off, LOL!
other regulars who know me came in and i introduced them to anita, all had nice things to say about me (they know me and see me alot so they know how I am). there was a small unofficial contest going on who were the best singers there. Now me? I don't consider myself anywhere close to being one of the best. Black man Bob and a black woman named stephanie to me are the best ones, bar none. they have "the voice". But I got thrown in with them as one of the best. It must've been the songs I sang because I abandoned most of my usual songs and tried a bunch of others I've been learning. So maybe that's how I got the vote. who knows.
I sang "cats in the cradle" by Harry Chapin, "Paper and Fire" by John Mellencamp(That was a first for me to try that one), "freebird" by Lynard Skynard (it's a request for me to do from a regular, it was her son's fave song and guess I do a good job with it), "A tender lie" by Restless Heart, "Still the same" by Bob Seger. "I want to walk you home "by Fats Domino(another first time for me trying that one, they didn't have "walking to new orleans" which I sing at the showboat). "Behind Closed Doors" by Charlie Rich, "Gloria" by Van Morrison(that one i did real well), and did "Real Good Man" by Tim McGraw enough that people got into it.
Lots of nice moments all night. my friends all tried to get me to crack while I was singing. they almost gpot me acouple times, and when I sang "freebird" my whole section did the "lighter" thing (waving the lighters). when I sang this line from "Real Good man", " I may drink too much and play to loud, hang out with a rough and rowdy crowd" my whole section roared with cheers. and then i find out while i went to briefly say hi to my friend Al, anita snuck a card in to sing, she never sings but suddenly I hear her name caled and I'm like what, "what the fuck"? She smiled and went up there. she said "Bill, this one is for you", and she belted out "Something to talk about" by Bonnie Raitt. if you know the words to it i think you cans see why she chose that one. as she sang it she came by me with the mic and was running her hand in my hair and around the back of my neck. man did i feel my face turn red and everyone near me saw it too. the wisecracks were coming a mile a minute, lol.
I didn't know she could sing, she said she rarely does and prefers t watch but wanted to surprise me, well, her doing that and making my face turn red as a stop sign sure did surprise me, lol. oh yeah, last song i did was "Born on the Bayou" by creedence clearwater revival. I'm finding songs that fit my vocal style, and more bluesey ones I'm getting more comfortable with. the change in songs was nice as I was able to adapt better and put more variety in what i do than the "usual".
Anita spent the night here with me and after I made coffee this morning, I walked her to her car. she's working a double shift today so we probably won't get together until friday night or saturday night after I get off work. I ave the day off today so I'm just gonna enjoy it for all I can. My friend Russ's wake is tonight so I'll be going to that, so I can say my final goodbyes to a good man.
I know anita will see this sometime today(she checks things online while at work, must be nice, lol) Thank you anita, you've shown me in such a short time what someone should've shown me, but didn't. One door has closed and with you, another has opened. I proved God's plan wrong again and you helped prove me right in alot of areas. Thank you. My plan will always win out over God's and that's a nice thing to know.
