Jerry Has Left The Building It's probably just the Diet Coke talking, because this sure doesn't sound like me, but just what in the name of Cheech And Chong was George and Tom smoking this morning?????
You know me, I never complain about anything, least of all, bumper music but I have to say that this morning the bumper choices were way way way way off. First, though, before I say that, I want to say that if it hadn't been for the fact that Jerry Reed's death was announced this morning, it would have been a pretty solid line up.
Not that I notice or anything, but there are people out there who are hyper critical of bumper songs and they jump all over the hosts when they bungle the job, as it was bungled this morning and I'm sure that those people noticed that had it not been for the sad news about Jerry, there would have been little to criticize. A little, but not much. Not the usual amount, anyway.
Overall, the music did a pretty good job of matching the themes. The part that got left out was flexibility. It's a simple rule: When someone dies, if that person was a musician, it doesn't matter how many hours you've slaved away picking the perfect music to fit the show, YOU ADD A COUPLE OF SONGS BY THE PERSON WHO DIED!!!!!!!!!!
Is that too hard a rule to follow? Or have we tossed all the rules out the window? Is this the Brave New World Of Bumper Music? What's next? Not playing My Way on Frank's birthday? Not playing Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime on Dean's birthday? When Alice Cooper dies (God forbid in my lifetime cause I don't want to live to see that day but with my luck, it will be tomorrow's headline and I'll still be here) will we not play I Love The Dead?
Art Bell is right! There are clues and signs all over the place that tell you when you've outlived your expiration date. That point when you look at what's happening and say, "I really don't mind dying now." And if Jerry was here, I'm sure he would write a very funny song about the phenomenon with a very catchy melody.
And he still might. If everything goes wrong. I'm (Of course) having Miss Bunni, my Chief Executive Vice President In Charge Of Other Worldly Affairs and Head Astrologer, part the veil between the living and the dead and invite him to this Friday's party and I want all of you to solemnly vow right now that you won't mention last night's show.
If we're lucky, he didn't listen to it and it won't come up and we can avoid this whole unpleasant, unsavory incident. I hope it turns out that way. I'm going to go now. And watch Smokey And The Bandit. And have another Diet Coke.
