Update From Checkpoint Centennial Do you remember how Berlin was from about 1945 to around 1960? If you answered yes to that question...and I'm risking my job with Visit Quad Cities (
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=quad+city+tourism&btnG=Google+Search) for saying this but I've about had it up to here with those backward hayseeds anyway because I'm the best cheerleader this dull dreary one horse town ever had and if those mouth breathing troglodyte's can't recognize that I'm not only the best but also the most diplomatic promoter they will ever have, screw them!...you don't have to bother coming here for your next vacation because you've already seen it and done it.
Except that fewer people speak German here. And the wall came down a long time ago...do remember that magically inspiring day when President Reagan came here and said, "Eb, tear down that wall!" Eb was, of course, the Mayor Of East Moline's handyman and he tore down that wall...over the objections of the mayor but Moline and East Moline were united once again.
Other than that, though, it's exactly the same. Except that no one bothered to restore freedom here. We have a fascist micro managing control freak government and if you do come here, make sure you have your papers...especially if you want to cross the Centennial Bridge. And if you go to Bettendorf, make your sure you're a WASP, who falls within the income requirements unless you have a day pass for gardening and/or housecleaning.
Now that all the exceptions are out of the way, let's get back to the similarities. Things like the demolished buildings and war torn landscape and the lack of electricity and water. And the closed roads. The lack of skilled professionals in the rebuilding field. Oh, there is one more difference---The U.S. government poured a lot of money into rebuilding Berlin.
So, all in all, coming here is just about exactly the same as visiting post war Berlin and if you've already done that, you don't have to bother coming here. I suggest visiting Iraq instead. It's running way more smoothly the Quad Cities. Just one last thing, please write Visit Quad Cities and tell them I deserve a raise.
