I finally updated my website.. decided to just link my flash site to a wordpress blog for easier updates. I guess it's also necessary to move my blog to a space where I can embed videos. I'll keep my blurty for my loved ones and closer circle of friends.

11:45 pm - just so this will be remembered
2008 was the year that swept me off my feet. I was in Clermont Ferrand in February, Princeton and New York in May, the Maldives in July, Hong Kong in August, Pusan in October, London in November and then New York again in December. I got to meet all these famous people, started work with Eric Khoo, coffee with Stef Sun, Broadway play with Dick Lee and supper with Tom Cruise and Brian Singer.

A Family Portrait's out on DVD, Katong Fugue is still traveling on its own, Keluar Baris won big at the SIFF and Sandcastle is on its way.

I couldn't have wished for anything more.

3:02 pm - that other world
Photobucket

It was quite a surreal night.. maybe because I was constantly in a semi-drunk state. I was invited by Chris Lee, whom I met in Hong Kong, to attend the premiere of Valkyrie. Chris is one of the executive producers of the film and wanted to introduce me to Bryan Singer. I met Chris, his partner Peter, and Peter's family at their hotel and went in a limo to the Jazz at Lincoln Center where the premiere was held.

Yes I was excited already cos it was my first time in a limo. haha. That's Hayato, Peter's friend. Throughout the night, I was probably as star-struck as he was, but he had the benefit of not needing to hide it because he does furniture design.

At the first after-party, Chris introduced me to Tom Cruise as a 'director from Singapore'. It was so unreal. I had to pretend to be professional and all. So hard. I was also introduced to Katie Holmes and Tom's mum.

After that, we joined the cast and crew at the Nobu Fifty Seven for the after-after-party, where I got to meet other familiar faces of the movie industry that is Hollywood. And as if that wasn't enough, we were then invited to an apartment on the top floor of The Plaza Hotel for a final party. Everyone was so drunk by that time.

...

The night ended at 4am for me. I was walking down Park Avenue, like I was stepping out from a dream.

10:31 am - Milk
The audience in the theatre in Chelsea offered a spontaneous but solemn applause when the credits started to roll. As we were leaving the theatre, I overheard a woman tell someone sitting next to her "I really wanted to see this because I remember everything that had happened so clearly." I'm sure she was also reminded by the film that the same arguments homophobes were using 30 years ago are still being repeated today to perpetuate ignorance and fear.

Though a little bit conventional by Gus Van Sant's standards, this is by far the most empowering gay film I have seen. Enough films have been made that depict gay people as victims in self-pity. Van Sant's portrait of Harvey Milk is one of a human being comfortable in his skin, enlightened by years of discrimination and willing to fight injustice.

The issues raised in the film have many similarities to what Singapore is currently going through. Fridae, Shaw Organization and Crocodile are holding a charity gala premiere of Milk on 7 Jan (Wed) to raise funds for Indignation - Singapore's annual pride season. Details.

Please support. The standard ticket costs only $15 more than a normal weekend ticket. You will realise when the credits roll that your money was very, very well spent.

6:34 pm - 25
Photobucket

Dec 4 came and went and I'm now 25. wah that number used to sound so distant. So much has happened over the past five years. My new year resolutions don't usually come true. But I think the ones I made for the decade when I was turning 20 did.. in less than half the time I had expected them to. I have gotten to know so many amazing people whom I used to only admire, and been to places I never thought I'd be at this age.

A debut feature at 25.

Sounds really scary actually. With such an avalanche of events happening especially over the past year, I suddenly realise I have taken the leap of a lifetime, without knowing where exactly my feet will land. I'm just thankful that I am surrounded by the people I love while I'm at it.

2:05 pm - Thanksgiving in NYC
I've been in New York for a week! And time really just flies by. Tues was Chinatown day, Wed was MoMA day, Thurs was Thanksgiving, Fri was Black Friday, Sat was another Chinatown day and Sun was Chelsea day!

We decided to brave the street crowd and went to see the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade! It was lovely feeling like a child again.. although we couldn't recognise half the characters that floated by. Of them, I could only identify a smurf, pikachu, hello kitty, snoopy, ronald macdonald, buzz lightyear, duracell rabbit and david archuleta...

2:43 pm - my complaint to DBS
I am writing to voice my objection to the your company's support of Focus on the Family (FOTF).

James Dobson, the founder of FOTF has proclaimed in his books and other publications that homosexuality is a mental disorder caused by family problems and bad parenting, and that gay people are out to destroy marriage and the family.

Such unfounded allegations are untrue and deeply hurtful to me, my family and many of my friends. I see the bank's support of FOTF this festive season as an endorsement of its stand. As a gesture of my objection, I will leave my DBS card out of my wallet this entire festive season, and shall urge my friends to do the same.

8:53 am - Bristol & London
Photobucket

I was back in Bristol last week for the Encounters Short Film Festival. Keluar Baris was in competition in the International Panorama section. On top of seeing some really good films at the festival, it was also a very nice reunion of friends.

Photobucket

I arrived on the morning of the 20th, and immediately had a screening that night. Talk about jet-lag torture. Yuni arrived a day before me and we met at the bus station. We had arranged to share a room to save some money.

It was such a pleasant surprise when I found out on facebook that Marc and Anna's new film Cabaret Kadne was programmed in the same screening as Keluar Baris! Marc and Anna are from Barcelona, but I first met them in Germany two years ago at a student film festival. Later that year, I met them again in Barcelona when Sharon and I visited.

Photobucket

It was funny cos both of them actually appeared in Keluar Baris! haha! Daryl was scrolling through photos of them on his laptop when Father came into the room. And I never managed to ask for permission from them. heh. Oh well..

Anna lost so much weight over the past year, I couldn't recognise her! She shed a whopping 40kg! That's almost how much Yuni weighs! All she did was eat less and attend spinning classes. heh. She looks so much healthier now.

Photobucket

Photobucket

The other reunion was with Anthony! His film Haze was also in competition in the same section. He didn't have to suffer from jet-lag cos he came from London, where he is doing his masters at the prestigious National Film & Television School. Yuni and I, on the other hand, were constantly dozing off at screenings. Couldn't help it.. a 7pm screening equals 3am in Singapore.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Anyway on the last day, Yuni, Anthony, his girlfriend and I went to do the one touristic thing to do in Bristol: visit the SS Great Britain. Launched in 1843 as the largest vessel afloat, this was the first ocean-going ship to have an iron hull and a screw propeller. blah blah engineering. Okay lah.. it was very interesting, especially when I got to listen to diary accounts of the immigrants who went on it.

I left Bristol on the morning of 23rd to spend a night in London. Was supposed to have dinner with the Singapore gang there one.. but David Lee and Brian Chia couldn't make it, and there was some miscommunication with Joe Lee, so I ended up meeting only Vince and Brian Tan.

Photobucket

It was a lovely evening anyway. We had dinner near Oxford Street, then drinks at Soho. I was putting up at Vince's Kelvin Ang's place. I had intended to visit a museum for half a day, but I woke up too late. So I just walked around nearby Portobello Road and Notting Hill with Vince.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Went inside the Paul Smith boutique at Notting Hill. Couldn't afford anything lah.. even with the very affordable pound. Saving up for NYC.

Photobucket

By the early afternoon, I was on my way across London lugging winter clothes, pineapple tarts and boxes of Prima Taste, ready to cross the Atlantic! Onward to New York!

Photobucket

Richard Branson, bring me there!!!

woohoo!

2:05 am - month of new toys
I'm flying in two days! Nope, I haven't packed yet. And nope.. I have no more time to pack! I got a new Panasonic Lumix for my birthday this year. Finally a camera that can fit into my pocket!

Photobucket

Brian took that photo when we were ogling at the new Scarlet HD camera online. My parents bought a new LCD TV for the living room last week and with it came a 29" LCD TV as a free gift! We decided the best way to utilise it was to make it my computer monitor. woohoo! Check out the size of that thing!

Photobucket

I love it! I have so much space for my desktop now I don't know what to put on it! Best thing for skype! hehe. Too bad I only have two days left to use it this year.

So my friends came over last fri night for pot-luck, dvds and a mutated version of taboo which turned my living room into a trading floor. To call it chaos would be an understatement, especially during the moments when Brian contributed his gibberish.

I just installed Photoshop CS3! Finally! Been using the cranky version 7 for the longest time. heh. And I finally have Apple's signature Myriad font. Playing around with it, I decided to apple-ise the AFA's latest product:

Photobucket

Anyway, Un Retrato De Familia (A Family Portrait) - the first short that I directed - will be released in this DVD anthology, along with Zihan's Autopsy, Brian's Imelda Goes To Singapore and 6 other short films. heh. Try identifying the teeny-tiny images of us on the the DVD cover.

There'll be launch sessions over the next two weekends:

Kinokuniya Ngee Ann City
8 Nov 2008 (Sat)
2:30pm - 4:00pm

HMV Heeren
15 Nov 08 (Sat)
12:00pm - 2:00pm

Most of the filmmakers will be in attendance. There'll be Q&A and autographing. Come support! :)

1:39 pm - The World That Awaits
MEMORANDUM

TO: The president-elect
RE: Foreign policy
FROM: Richard N. Haass, President of the Council on Foreign Relations

"There will be days when you will wonder why you worked so hard to get this job. What will make it so difficult is not just all that awaits, but the constraints that will limit what you can actually do. When George W. Bush became president nearly eight years ago the world was largely at peace, the U.S. military was largely at rest, oil was $23 a barrel, the economy was growing at more than 3 percent, $1 was worth 116 yen, the national debt was just under $6 trillion and the federal government was running a sizable budgetary surplus. The September 11 attacks, for all they cost us as a nation, increased the world's willingness to cooperate with us. You, by contrast, will inherit wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, tired and stretched armed forces, a global struggle with terrorism, oil that has ranged as high as $150 a barrel, a weaker dollar (now worth 95 yen), substantial anti-American sentiment, a federal budget deficit that could reach $1 trillion in your first year, a ballooning national debt of some $10 trillion and a global economic slowdown that will increase instability in numerous countries..."
