That's it. I can't sleep. The dorm room is still empty tonight. At least Ron will be here tomorrow. It's amazing how soothing the sound of snores can be when you need reassurance that whatever your troubles are, things are mostly right with the world. I feel like I'm losing control of my thoughts and my speech. It's amazing...all the little things we lie to ourselves about. Well, Hermione will help me. She always does. Maybe she's right...maybe I should go to Dumbledore. Somehow, this is worse than my dreams last year, though the consequences are more trivial on the scale of the wizarding world. I thought the scars were gone, but they are just barely visible here in the moonlight. The words gleam like moonstone, or an abalone shell. You know, I don't even think that Umbridge meant for this to happen. This is something else entirely. Well, I'm going to regret this post in the morning, so I'll stop here. |

Malfoy's back--Hermione and I saw Peeves chasing Malfoy with the Exploding Spitwads I gave him (thanks Fred and George!) down the corriodor to the Slytherin common room. At least I've already gotten a good laugh out of him. Now I've got to get back to that Potions essay.... |

Well, it looks like everyone's favorite ferret is going to get back here before Ron or Ginny does. There really should be a law against that. Oh well, I guess it seems that I don't know how to enjoy peace and quiet, anyway, so what does it matter? Let the Slytherin scum return. I sent Hedwig off with an order for the books I'll need that I didn't get on my first swing through Diagon Alley. Those should be here tomorrow, which will give me enough time to complete the pre-term homework. I wonder when Neville, Dean, and Seamus are going to show up. I haven't had an owl from any of them this summer, other than the one from Neville at the beginning of the summer. I hope they're all well. So far, Voldemort hasn't been open with his actions since Dumbledore thwarted his attempts last year, but it still makes me uneasy to know he and Bellatrix are out there. Remus promised to tell me if anything major happened, but I'm still worried. However, I also promised him to do my best to just live a "normal life" while things are quiet, so I'm trying not to think too much about anything that happened last year. Also, Voldemort hasn't visited my mind since the events at the Ministry, and that helps, too. |

I need to finish deciding on my schedule for this year so that I can have the rest of my books delivered. Professor McGonagall told me last year that I would need five N.E.W.T.s to apply to be an auror, and that four of those should be Defense Against the Dark Arts, Transfiguration, Charms, and Potions. I got Outstandings in D.A.D.A. and Potions, and Exceeds Expectations in both Charms and Transfiguration, so I've been planning to take all of them. Essentially, the fifth N.E.W.T. is up to me, but Hermione say that I should take at least two N.E.W.T. level classes, just in case, and more if I can, since every N.E.W.T. gives you a better chance of getting hired. So, I have to pick from the rest that I scored well on. The Care of Magical Creatures exam was easy enough that I scored an O, and I earned an E on the Herbology and Astronomy (they must have scaled the scores to reflect the fact that no one was able to finish the test). Divination and History of Magic are right out, since I scored an Acceptable on the History exam and a Poor on Divination. Hagrid would be mortified if I dropped Care of Magical Creatures, and Herbology and Astronomy are interesting every so often, so I guess I'll sign up for seven N.E.W.T. classes altogether. That way, I'll have the best chance of getting a total of five N.E.W.T.s. On top of that, I've heard some rumors about new "elective" classes, but who knows if they're true or what will be offered, and I also have to resume my, er, remedial potions sessions, only this time with Dumbledore. Er, yes, potions with Dumbledore...he, of course, knows a lot about them. Yeah. He thought he...might help me get my N.E.W.T. Where's a time-turner when you need one? |

After getting in a few hours of flying practice this morning, I spent the afternoon studying on the empty, sun-drenched grounds. I have to say that being nearly alone here is much different in the summer than during the winter holidays. It's actually rather pleasant here with the nice weather and the lack of demands on my time, especially since there isn't a Slytherin in sight. Cho's not here, either, which is a bit of a relief. I really don't know what I'd say to her if I ran into her in the halls. I got a package from Fred and George at breakfast this morning, but I just now opened it due to the fact that they warned me not to show Hermione its contents because she probably wouldn't let me use one of the things they're sending me. On top of the usual assortment of goodies from their shop (they call it "interest" on the money I gave them), they sent a new invention for me to try out, along with one to give to Ron. It's called a Quick Notes Quill, which they've based on Rita Skeeter's Quick Quotes Quill. Supposedly it'll take notes for you in class. All you have to do is set it on top of your desk and pretend it's an extra quill, while you pass notes to the people next to you. Then, when you get back to your room, you set it up with a pile of parchment and let it write down everything the teacher said. They say that it still has a few problems, so Ron and I are supposed to tell them when it paraphrases too much or picks up the wrong conversations. |

I have to state one thing clearly for the record: I am not happy about being in the N.E.W.T. Potions class. Thanks to Hermione's reminder at breakfast today about the essay that's due to Snape on the very first day of class, I am no longer able to keep that fact out of my mind. When I opened my O.W.L. results, I was ready to be both angry and relieved by not getting an Outstanding on the Potions exam, but somehow, I did. I, Harry Potter, The Boy Who Snape Would Love to Feed to Rabid Flobber Worms, not only passed my Potions O.W.L., but got a high enough grade to allow me to have a chance of being an auror someday, assuming that I find a way to survive two more years of Snape and do well enough to earn a N.E.W.T. I knew I did better without Snape's nose in my cauldron, but an Outstanding? If I didn't know her better, I might think that Professor McGonagall had stepped in on my behalf after her impassioned performance at my career guidance session. Anyway, I'm supposed to be researching the magical properties of parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme, but all I've found so far are Muggle recipes and a song by some Muggle group that Hermione had heard on the radio a few times. |

When I got the owl telling me that fifth-years and above could return to the school early this year, I was ecstatic. Granted, I feel a bit bad about coming earlier than Ron, but he'll be along soon enough, I hope. As much as I love the Burrow, for some reason I just wanted to get back to Hogwarts. For one thing, there are a lot more opportunities to practice flying here. I'm really going to have to practice to make up for missing the better part of last season. I'm kind of glad that Ginny said she'd was going to switch to chaser this year so that we don't have to compete for the position. I think I leant her my Firebolt a few too many times this summer to be comfortable with that prospect. Seriously, though, she really has improved. Another reason that I felt drawn back to school is that I wanted a few moments of peace, and there's loads of peace in my empty dorm room. Maybe a little too much peace, but the others will be here soon and there's always Hermione. Crookshanks was sitting in Hermione's favorite armchair by the fire, so she is already here, like she said she would be. I assume she's in her room, studying, and of course all of Gryffindor knows that boys can't go up the girls' staircase after what happened to Ron last year, though that slide might be kind of fun if you were expecting it. I'm sure I'll see her at breakfast in the morning. I think I'll slip on my Invisibility cloak and wander down to the prefects' bathroom on the fifth floor and see if that password still works, since no one is around to catch me. After that, I think I'll take this opportunity to sleep in a room without my snoring roommates. |
