Early morning jaunts to the old city on semi-impromptu photo shoots seem to have become the norm on weekends, for me... I was up and awake, surprisingly, at 6 on a saturday morning and spent 30 minutes cleaning my camera, checking my equipment and loading a new film... Which wasn't strictly neccesary, since all my equipment is new and loading a film rarely takes more than 7 seconds...!
The recent switch from Kodak films to Fuji is working out very well for me... Especially when I'm shooting in the heart of Ahmedabad... The colours come out vibrant and saturated, almost exactly the way I see them for real...
The focus, this time, was exclusively on the two extremities of the route I usually take... At the very start of the route- the Swaminarayan Temple, the oldest of it's kind in the world... Located in the very heart of the Kalupur area, the energy is palpable even as you come within 500 meters of the site... All the lanes leading up to it have, over the years, become bustling marketplaces dealing in everything from vegetables to stationery to the obligatory shops selling offerings for the temple deities... The sounds and the crowds are madding and religious and spiritual fervour overshadow everything else...! At the other end of the route- the Jumma Masjid, built around 1200 AD to cater to the influx of Muslims from 1142 AD onwards... In size and scale it is much bigger and grander than the temple 2.5 kms away, but the austerity of the place and the absence of colour and crowds makes it a study in still life...! Calmness and serenity are all pervading here... It would be quite natural to pass by the unassuming main entrance without realising that one of the largest open square in Ahmedabad lies within the fortified walls...!!
I'm hoping the pictures turn out as expected... I don't ask for much really, just one exemplary frame, from the 36 shot, would be nice...
