Cinema Paradiso Dir: Guiseppe Tornatore, Italy
I had heard so much about this film from so many people, I wouldn't have been surprised to be disappointed when I finally got to watch it... Instead it turned out to be everything people had told me about and more...! Without a doubt one of the best films I've seen in a long time and right up there with films like Lasse Halstrom's My Life As a Dog and Roberto Benigni's Life is Beautiful...
I could give a brief account of the story and, in the process, ruin it utterly. Which is why I'll stick to writing how it made me feel instead. Like life, it's bittersweet. Happy in some parts and tragic in others. And, like life, everytime tragedy strikes it moves on.
And, like an account of someone's eventful life that I have been privileged to share for a few hours, it is has touched me to the core. Salvatore and Alfredo will be on my mind for a long while yet.
