: A milestone.
Today I decided that the best way to proceed with the car business was to telephone the company that originally rebuilt the transmission and demand that they repair it-and pay for it to be towed all the way down to Massachusetts and back.
I rang them this morning and told them what happened. I spoke to the same cad who gave me all the trouble last time, and when I got to the bit about paying for the towing, he refused.
Well, it was then that I got over my fear of him and of standing up for myself. I let him "have it," as they say. I informed him that I knew all about the way that he had lied to me the last time around. "You have been caught," I said to him. This flustered him, but he argued further-and began to take on a nasty tone of voice. It was then that I told him: "I have been very patient with you, but the way I see it, you have three choices. Number one, you can fix my car and pay for the towing. Number two, I can have it fixed here in Vermont, and I will send you the bill. Number three, you can do nothing, and I will take you to court-where I will make you pay for the repairs, the towing, the rental car, *and* the towing and rental car from last time. I have already spoken to a lawyer, and I have two lawyers in Massachusetts who will help me if need be. I think that I am being very fair. I have given you three options-so pick one."
He caved like a castle made of cotton balls. My car was picked up this afternoon. I can only hope that he will hold to our deal-and that I scared him sufficiently. Ah well, no matter what happens, I was assertive and said what needed to be said.
I am so proud of myself. This is the bravest that I have been... ever. And the first time that I have really and truly stood up to someone who was treating me poorly. Furthermore, I did it without crying, without losing my temper, and without using foul language.
Someone is growing up!
