: WANT
I've become a big fan of the current mainstream Marvel Universe. Don't get me wrong - I think Spider-Man and Hulk both suck, but I've definetly taken a liken to the Bendis/Millar era of Avengers and Fantastic Four. There's a gigantic story being told here that I can really truly appreciate. Disassembled, Secret War, Enemy of the State, New Avengers, House of M, Decimation, Planet Hulk, Civil War, Annihilation, Death of Captain America, The Intiative, Back in Black, One More Day (which is shit), World War Hulk, Annihilation: Conquest, Endangered Species, Messiah CompleX, Divided We Stand, and now, Secret Invasion.
It's pretty remarkable to see some consistent strength across the line. Granted, there are some huge whoopers. One More Day was so terrible, I dropped all plans to continue reading Spider-Man. Loeb's Hulk run seems like just a huge distraction from the great story that Greg Pak has been telling (and will continue to tell in Skarr: Son of the Hulk). Plus, going back even further, Disassembled was a huge upset.
But there's a certain vibe and energy in the Marvel Universe. The sci-fi stuff has been great and I actually really want to read "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "Nova" -- except I can't because I don't have the cash. New/Mighty Avengers have both been great books that (despite the flaws here and there) have done a great job telling two sides of the same story. The X-Books smartly dealt with the aftermath of Decimation, if not a little too late. I'm not pleased with the events in "Emperor Vulcan," but everything else from the X-Men has been good since Endangered Species last Fall. Fantastic Four is brillant and beautiful.
What I really like is that even with all this stuff happening, there's been a lot of auxilary books coming out and dealing various parts of the MU in very different ways. The Intiative is still spitting out books -- such as the Last Defenders and Avengers: The Intiative. World War Hulk spawned Aftersmash.
Oh, and who the hell would have thought that the most priased Marvel comic out right now would be "Captain America?"
So anyways, my point is that I want it all. And I can't get it. Sadface.
