19th September, 2004. 10:45 am. Cat food...

Tom, there are a couple bags of cans of cat food in the cat room in the basement. Before you open the door to the basement, be sure to make sure there are no cats in the kitchen or back hall, and then close both the door between the back hall and the living room, and the door between the kitchen and the dining room. Then you may open the basement door. You have to make sure that Qwill is separated from the other cats due to the food. Once you have a bag of the Whiskas, then shoo Qwill back down into the basement and close the door.

Current mood: awake.

17th September, 2004. 11:28 pm. Finally, Miami!!

Flights today were fine. All the interesting things were not fight related!

So we're waiting for our flight and I call the hotel in Miami to double-check our reservation, and it had been cancelled! So I had to quickly get back on Priceline and find a different hotel. Now the words "quickly" and "Priceline", combined with the laptop and the wireless Internet connection through Chris' phone, just *don't* go together! Ugh! I've had faster page download times with a 28,800 modem!

So, we are now at the Sheraton Biscayne Bay, which again wasn't where we were supposed to be, but has the advantage of having a Budget rental car return right in the hotel. So the one bit of the trip that I hadn't planned - getting from FLL to Miami - finally fell into place.

So, tomorrow at 4 pm we sail on the Carnival Triumph. :^D Finally!

Now, the usual webcam that we've been using to watch her sail is at http://live6.truelook.com/face/newface.jsp?name=/ecodb/wachovia&func=live&overlay=default but thanks to Frances it says it's not working. There is another webcam at http://live6.truelook.com/face/newface.jsp?name=/ecodb/fourseasons&func=live&overlay=default that might work. These webcams are simply *amazing* - you can zoom in really, really close.

http://www.carnival.com/CMS/Static_Templates/weather_update.aspx is the page at Carnival's website where you can check to see if anything about our sailing has changed. So far the only change is that we're going to Costa Maya instead of Grand Cayman. When a hurricane is causing real problems, they update that page 3x a day - usually at 11 am, 2 pm and 5 pm. But, given the current path of Jeanne, I don't think we're going to have a problem.

Big day tomorrow!

16th September, 2004. 11:14 pm. Best laid plans and all...

We're still in Syracuse! The flights were delayed in and out of Atlanta, so we rebooked for tomorrow at 1 pm.

This has actually worked out well for us, because now we can leave the van here at the hotel and take the hotel's shuttle, and not have to pay for parking at the airport. That savings alone will more than pay for the extra cost of the hotel room. And in theory, we might even be able to be reimbursed for this hotel night by the trip insurance, since our trip has been interrupted. We shall see.

Lesson reinforced today - flying in at least a day early is a good thing.

Good night,
:^*

16th September, 2004. 2:49 pm. On the road, just past exit 47...

OK, so I had a feeling that if I said we'd be out the door by noon, it would be closer to 1 pm - and we left at 1:20.

Mom, thanks again for that battery pack you got Chris for Christmas. We stopped for gas at the Mobil over by Tops and lo and behold, the van wouldn't start 'cause the battery was dead!

Now, to catch up the rest of the universe - hi! :^) We're the Kalisiaks - me (Heather, known as the_monkey at Cruise Critic), DH Chris, DS Stephen (6.5) and DD Talia (4), and this is the journal of our first cruise - the Carnival Triumph, sailing on September 18th from Miami. Here's our schedule as it stands right now:

Literally right now - drive to Syracuse from the Buffalo area

5:05 pm - Delta flight 5249 from Syracuse to Atlanta, GA, arriving at 7:30 pm
8:35 pm - Delta fight 707 from Atlanta to Ft. Lauderdale, FL, arriving at 10:24 pm

Tonight until Saturday we are staying at the Mariott Biscayne Bay in Miami (ph.305.374.3900)

Saturday we board the Carnival Triumph in Miami. Right now we are scheduled for stops in Cozumel, Grand Cayman, and Ocho Rios - however, as Grand Cayman was hit very hard by Hurricane Ivan, we're not going there. I don't know right now whether any of our other ports have been changed, or what.

Saturday the 25th we are scheduled to get off the ship (sob) and then we will be staying at the Embassy Suites in Ft. Lauderdale (ph.954.527.2700).

We fly home on the 27th, Delta flight 786 from Ft. Lauderdale to Atlanta, leaving at 11:25 am, and then fight 5249 again from Atlanta to Syracuse, leaving at 2:17 pm and arriving in Syracuse at 4:27 pm. So we should be home by 8 pm on Monday the 27th.

Whew. How boring for you, Reader - but how exciting for us. :^)

Now, those fights today might change. I'm pretty sure that flight to Atlanta is overbooked, and since we don't need to be in Miami until Friday at the earliest, we're going to offer to be bumped to a different flight (or flights, as the case may be). I will update more as we know more.

That's it for now.

ps Chris says that the garbage in the kitchen needs to be taken out, and could someone please start the dishwasher and wash the two pans in the sink. *insert me rolling my eyes here* And the dog is supposed to have the run of the house and not be locked up in just the kitchen - and please leave the radio on in there as well, Chelsea likes to listen to NPR in the afternoon. :^) And the keys (in case anyone needs to get into the barn) are in the garage in my drying rack on the very top.

pss To reply to a message, you click on the link right under the entry - it says something like "make note" or something silly like that.

Current mood: excited.
