remember all those times when i was all "yeah, we don't have to pay any utilities, it's awesome"? well, turns out i was wrong.
i guess what happened is, after the last tenant moved out, our landlord switched the electric bill over to her name. she did not change the address though, which is why it's so weird we never received a bill. not once. in a year. even if she had it set up to receive electronic notices, she would've gotten a bill and realized it needed to be switched over to us.
so our electric bill hasn't been paid in a year, and i got a disconnect notice in the mail today. actually, although it had our address in it plain as day, it had our landlord's name. obviously.
xcel had the right address the whole time, so why did we never get anything until today? i don't know. but i called them right away and fixed everything. the account is in our names now, and they're sending us a new bill with the start date of when we first moved in (april 15, 2008) and will break it down into months. then i can call them again and set up a payment plan so the total is spread out over the next several months and those amounts are added to our monthly bill itself.
so there that is. it's not bad, really. i had a good laugh over the ridiculousness of the situation. and it's not a terribly high amount considering how lax we've been with our electricity usage (i've always been pretty good about it, but darren tends to leave things on a lot. like his computer). it'll be easy to pay off. but now i don't get to brag about the awesome deal i'm getting.
