i wasn't going to write about this until we knew exactly what happened, but i'm just so livid right now.
randy (formerly the artistic director, but as of this year the char of the theatre department at concordia) is leaving next week. he announced it on wednesday. he's in the middle of directing a show, teaching classes, and you know... being a freakin' mentor. but he's leaving, and nobody will say why. mostly all anyone would do was confirm that it has nothing to do with his family or anything, that he's just leaving. except mike, the technical director, who said something that made it clear it is the university's fault.
tim, being an insider and a journalist at heart, has been doing some digging. most of the other students are apparently content with "well, it's randy's decision." but it seems tim has learned that it is exactly what pissed off alumni have been speculating: it's because he's gay. however, he's been working at concordia for six years and it hasn't been an issue until now.
eric and i have a theory that i think others share. we figure someone in power, like a member of the board of regents, decided that having a gay department chair is bad for the university. they told randy that and randy, who doesn't need this job, made the decision to leave instead of dealing with that kind of bullshit.
just a theory though. i just think it's ironic that concordia's theme for the year is "a community for unity."
