Austin, baby, I’ve been gone way to long!

2007 and things are a changing…

Due to the wacky weather (snow!) and close down of the city, I had a chance to spruce up my Myspace page with html and css for the first time. I also added some new pics and info. Yay for change on the online world!

Also, I moved back to Austin and it feels great! Oh, how very much did I miss it so!

I'm also back at St. Edward's. As expected and always dreaded I will be graduating this May. I'm kind of freaking out by this sad ending and I'm trying to manage to stay another semester or two free of charge… but it doesn't look like it'll be possible.

New very exciting news is that I managed to talk my way (long story) into a paid internship at the PBS station here in Austin, KLRU! It has always been a goal of mine to intern for a television station specifically PBS so YAY for accomplishing goals!

So I have my life planned out until May.I have until then to figure out how to extend the fun and my youth.

Traveling wherever the wind carries me to...
Category: Travel and Places

Well weeks have passed and I have begun traveling again. Online courses offer great flexibility even though they include so much busy work! This past weekend I spent in Wisconsin at a McNair conference with all my friends from the summer!

I'm officially making my Myspace private, a grad school recruiter casually told me, "I'll be sure to keep in touch either by email or for sure on Myspace." wtf.

The whole decision on the grad school thing has been driving me crazy. A semester and a half away from graduation and I just don't feel like I'm reached my full intelligence level so I'm very tempted. But...some people tell me to wait. Some people tell me 2 years of work experience is more valuable than 2 years of grad school. Some people tell me a BA is not enough and having a master's degree or a Phd is necessary to be financially happy with a dream job. Then the next question Master's or Phd? I don't want to be a professor or do research... so just a Master's? In what? Communication and Culture? Radio Television and Film? American Studies? Ethnic Studies? Chicano Studies? Women's Studies? Out of state? In state?Private? Public? Should I try various internships for a couple of years? Maybe I should just go for it all and get my Phd? Isn't there other things to do with a Phd than teach and research? Maybe I should just be satisfied with a BA? If I am what kind of career do I want?!

Yikes! All these questions!! Deciding on an undergraduate degree and school was much easier!! I think for now I will wait until next fall to apply to graduate school and for the next year continue school and take up a couple of internships.

Right now I am in Washington DC having a blast! On Tuesday night I saw my favorite band Death Cab for Cutie at the Constitution hall theatre which is big and beautiful!! It was packed I had perfect seats right in the upper center orchestra section! Such happiness! Hopefully next week I'll head out to Asheville, North Carolina to see the beautiful eastern american landscape! I'll be here up east until the 21st and then I head back to TX. This semester is going faster than expected! In a month or so I'll be signing a lease for Austin, TX!! yay!

Life Happens When You're Busy Making Plans...
Current mood: hopeful

Updates from summer and new plans for fall...

Summer in ..:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Indiana was great and I made some amazing friends from all over the country.

..:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Spending some time in Washington D.C and seeing my buddy Giovanni for the first time after 7 years in New York City will definitely always be a highlight of my life!

As most of you all knew I was headed off for a semester abroad in the Netherlands. My first day visiting home though disaster struck and an immediate family member overnight started suffering from a serious illness. Days before my flight and all ready to go I was faced with some life changing decisions once in a lifetime opportunity to study abroad or stay home with my suffering family. ..

Because family comes first I will be staying in the US more specifically here in Poteet to help as much as possible. One good side to this is St. Edwards has agreed to count a couple of Palo Alto courses in order to help me graduate hopefully by May!

So to all my Austin peeps Ill try to make some trip ups north to hang with friends I miss very much!! I also plan to be an Austinite again ny next Spring!

As for my pals here at home just call and lets hang!

June 13, 2006 - Tuesday

current destination:

I have arrived! Saturday my brother and I landed in Chicago and spent the day living the city and eating eating some amazing pizza.

Sunday we drove the two hours to South Bend and what a difference the weather is compared to Texas! I am told the weather won't last and it is only a cold front... but it's similiar to Texas winters... so it is a hint to me that the summer weather def. won't be as bad as down south.

Monday my brother left : ( and I was left here to wander this green green city. I met my research mentor and he seems very interested in my focus of study, Chicano Literature. While here we are also required to volunteer and I will be tutoring middle school students at a family center in town, should be fun.

Notre Dame is a beautiful campus and flowers are everywhere! It is very easy to get lost on this large campus and taking off early anywhere I go has been a obstacle for me but I am gradually getting used to it.

My program has students from Notre Dame, Clark Atlanta, Xavier University in New Orleans, St. Mary's in TX and St.Ed's so there is a good mix of people. All the girls live in a all girls dorm and there are strong curfews on boys and other rules. I guess nobody cares to much since studying 24/7 is on everybody's minds.

So I'm off now to a lunch meeting, I'll update more as the summer rolls and especially if my adventure here include more traveling.

Edit June 16, 2006: I love sending "the mail" the ol' way through stamps, planes, trucks and men/women in uniforms so send me a message with "yall's" addresses! This is my postal box:

May 10, 2006 - Wednesday

current destination: ol' petite poteet, tx

So my semester is over... whew! I have to say the best courses I have ever taken at St. Ed's have been this semester:

Rhetorical Criticism [I don't know how I got through this one]

Yoga [Not the typical yoga, one with required papers and mental and body awareness... more work than anticpated...but counted 3 hrs yay!]

Women in the Arts [fun. fun. fun.]

Popular Communication [worked for SXSW : ) ]

Social Movements "Prison Industrial Complex" [one of the most amazing professors in this country Raul Salinas... this class was so inspiring!]

Introduction to Women's Studies [volunteered for Austin activism organization PODER (People Organized in Defense of the Earth and her Resources)]

18 hours... 5 As and 1 B. Crazy semester felt like I was studying nonstop! I was fortunate enough though, to do not one but two presentations on Tejano Superstar Selena! Hell yeah! Ha but overall, I am exhausted... which is why I have decided to opt out of Maymester courses at Northwest Vista... and relax (even if this means I graduate from SEU in August 2007)!! But yay I have a whole month off! I'm going to be living in Poteet, TX con mis padres. This means trips to south padre with my sister, the park with my nieces and nephews, catching up with friends and time to read whatever I want!

Next destination: South Bend, Indiana

Flight takes off: June 10, 2006

-Whooop!

p.s. my phone's screen broke and I have been unable to transfer my phone numbers to my new phone... which means I have nobody's phone number! Soo if you want to hang message or call me!

Partying it up at the Capital

Last night I went with my friend Sara to a party for this state represenative that she works for in the state capital. He has one of the fanciest offices in the whole place, the whole back balcony of the capital is his and it has quite a view of central Austin!

I hadn't been in there since my senior field trip and not being in the soberest state made the visit quite an interesting experience... let's just say we were in positions that we could've been arrested within a flash no doubt... but I'll leave that up to the imagination...

And by the way those Republicans can party...

Funny to see conservative wealthy 80 year old men in business suits loosen up a bit and drink thier Coors light.

Sara said the next morning looked like a result of a frat party...

This has had to be added to my list of crazy parties in Austin... oddest no doubt...

Aww it's funny how a show can bring back so many memories!!

I went to the All American Rejects, Hellogoodbye and Over It show last night... I hadn't seen them all in over a year!!

I danced all night! Surprised that I had enought room to.

Found a Dairy Queen on Riverside but they don't have Banana Pudding Blizzards... actually they only have like 6 dif. kinds of Blizzards compared to an endless amount in Poteet... I guess city DQs can't really compare to small town ones... o'well ate a banana split blizzard before the show and it was good!

Well in the end the show was goood, reminded me a lot of my senior year of high school and freshman year of college a lot... : )

Now its back to school
Current mood: bouncy

Well school is back not quite prepared but I guess the first few weeks I can always warm up.

18 hours... how long can I go before I drop one?

M.I.A is tommorow/friday at La Zona Rosa so so excited... it's her first show in the US.... it's my first show for the school year... actually a warm up show before I get to...

ACL FEST!! Next Weekend!! Whoohoo!! I'm gonna go crazzzzzy.

Half price books is having a sale until sunday EVERYTHING 20fff. I bought a lot of books... but not the ones I needed for school though...

Gave up on my old computer and went in debt with a new lap top... I think I broke the speakers already... but its okay because all my music (4500 songs) are on my old computer... oh how i miss them so...

Saturday I make an early morning drive (6:30) to San Antonio... Andy and I our going to babysit our nephew Antonio and niece Marissa. This means being kids again... just how it was in the old days... : ) I can't wait to play Lego Stars Wars Trilogy!! I love that video game!! My nephew is pretty good at it, for only being 4 years old... but I kinda have a tendency to take over... i just can't help it

I have to get serious about school...but so many good shows are coming up its going to be hard!! How long can my charm last before my professors decide enough is enough and request work from me???

Saw stephen marley on MTV today... it was quite odd... I missed the crazy lady from his show who danced and imitated the "feeling of the marley"... he needs to realize he can't be understood or truly felt without her...

I wish Flight Path coffee house was so much closer...it has such great lighting and mood but it's just so far from south austin... I wrote most of my paper today even after having a 1 hour conversation w/brian about friends, communication and cognitive complexity...

I better get to bed... since between the show and having to drive to sa i'll probably only be getting 5 hours of sleep...

Break it down

Hmm... my room is a mess... I move back to my on campus apartment in 2 weeks. Yikes! Ehh packing... I can't ever avoid it... at least this time it's only half my shit.

On Tuesday I saw my fav. soul singer Amos Lee with Laura at Stubbs Inside. OOhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh... 2 hour show!! So so good. That man has a voice like no other... so sensual and smooth.. kept to meet him after, I made him laugh by saying "I represent all the Latinas here." His smile is just about as sexy as his voice. : )

I also saw Pepe Aguilar with my mom, sister and sister in law... he rocked so much... my mom greatly enjoyed it... Intocable was another story...: /

I got paid! But.. it's all gone.. did some overtime today....7 hours... should help out. Had to miss De La Soul... to many expenses...

After waiting 2 years I've finally gotten myself some eye glasses. Unlike my other pair(s) (which had to be replaced twice for some rough concerts and shows and the last pair which were later given up on because of the same thing) I will not wear them to shows.

Better go to sleep, tommorow morning I'm going to Poteet to take my niece school shopping and then to her first day of kindergarten on Monday! These kids just grow up so fast...

Digable Planets "Reunion Tour"
Current mood: sleepy

Last night I saw Digable Planets w/ Procussions and that was a damn good show!! Mariana, Sarah and I shaked our booties the whole night. The show was intense and the bands did a great job of keeping the crowd riled up.

The night ended wonderfully with a late meal at Wung Fu. The only hard part was having to wake up at 7 for work. eh I am so tired now... Oh well the show was worth it.

Other notes:

The Kasabian show held at the Parish over a week ago was a must event, those British guys really know how to put on a show.

Guess who has her ticket to Cake? : )

A friend bought me the Amos Lee CD! I've been listening to his smooth luscious voice non stop!

Southwest Shootout also know as the Slam Poetry Southwest Regionals have been moved from Albuquerque, New Mexico to here to Austin this year. Whoa babe! Yay Austin!

The only problem is I'm going to have to miss the much anticipated band for me, the reggae band John Brown's Body ... o'well sometimes a girl is forced with decisions...

Saturday I was able to take a break and eat with Brian, Jon and Ann at this great Indian restaurant on Congress... ohhh so goood. Later Brian Ann and I headed out to Ruta Maya to see Echobase Soundsystem which are really awesome! They are electronica/dub and they ahd a cool projector on in the background that had some crazy images! Hard to explain... they were different... cool and in some weird way they went with the songs. It was a very cool experience!

Well i'm off to do more work... it just never ends...

2 more weeks... is that a good thing or should it worry me that that is all the time I have left??!!

9:05 pm - Bizzy Bizzy Bizzzy
School is catching up with me less than a month left!! aww!!

Its been fun though. Everything has been going great!! I've been so so so happy!

Had a huge Comm Theory test but it was so much less stressul studying with Tara at cool hippy Austin coffee shop!! Hopefully I aced that test.

This past weekend was super cool, Friday I went to eat with my roomate Liz at the CLay Pit which is so good and romantic I reccomend it to anyone especilaly on a date. They sat us in the basement where the ceiling was 5 ft high and was filled with Indian music and beautifully lit with candles. It felt like we were in those fancy restaurants they show on the food network. Later Annette and I went to see Sin City at the new Drafthouse on Lamar. Its so good I loved it!

Saturday night was crazy early in the day I hung out with Sara, Aubrey and thier friend Clay and we went looking for a crawfish festival which ended us up trailing around downtown. Quite fun! We were also quite drunk which added to the excitement. On a random moment we entered the Crest tour bus shaped as a crest tube of toothpaste that was situate downtown and brushed our teeth with free toothbrush and toothpast and one of the little sinks inside which is insanely funny when one is drunk.

We ended up eating at Free Birds where Brian picked me up and we and a friend headed out to a Reggae show at the Flamingo Cantina. It was so so cool!! I danced my booty off!! I love letting the beat flow through my heart!! Aww when I'm with Reggae I'm with joy!!

The funny part of the night was when I was telling Brian that I wnated to get with the Tambourinist of the Mau Mau Chaplains. I mean how cool is that! Professional Tambourinist! But the thing was he's kind've old haha! Well he ended up coming up to me later and told me to email him, "Do you email?" It was so cute he gave me his info on the inside of a matchbook. If he was younger he would've for sure taken my heart away!

Sunday my roomates and I as well as Bill "relaxed" and headed out Chuys where Bill treated yay!! And then relaxed all day at Zilker. The water was cold but ti was cool chillin there.... so relaxing!

What a fun fun weekend!

6:02 pm - Gonna take my cares, gonna carry my cares, gonna carry my cares away
What a weekend! It started out with Liz's mom visiting on friday and we went to Joe's Crab Shack mmm so so good.

Later I went w/ Laura and Matt to Marissa's BD party. Quite fun a lot of friends I hadn't seen in a long time. I got over the top and got drunk a bit fast haha... my tolerance has gotten very low w/ liquor... I'm just not how I used to be. Well I ended up in my bed at the end of the night so that's always a good thing. I had several friends take care of me which I'm fortunate to have. You always can tell who your friends are when you're having one of these nights. :) Pulling back your hair, carrying you, placing a trash can that is perfect to your liking, refusing to let you pass out anywhere but your bed, not allowing you to go home w/male, not allowing you to make out more with male you'd rather not would, not allowing you to get naked, fixing your skirt and top to make sure secret body parts aren't uncovered, driving you across town to your apartment to sleep in your own bed, making sure much needed trash bags, napkins and water are around, listening to you ramble, putting up with persistance of you not wanting to get up from the toilet/floor/car backseat you would rather stay at and anything else drinker might have of or no doubt have forgotten. It took a team thanks Chris, Laura, Matt, Mari, Liz and anyone else I missed I love ya!!

Saturday came all to soon and my sister took me out in the morning despite my major hangover. We went apartment hunting (I'm gonna live w/ her in the summer yay!) and the time spent in the car didn't do well with my stomach. We later ate at Shady Grove which I loved! And classy me threw up behind dumpster just in time to eat lovely carby burger and fries. mmmm.

Saturday night I went with Jen, Jen's friend Daniel who was visiting and Erin to a UT Hellraiser party. Plenty of drinks but the music kind've sucked and the people weren't very outgoing. But it was cool spending time w/ Erin and Jen. Thank God for Wang Fu being open until 4 am for a tasty morning treat. ooo so so so good.

Sunday I woke up 2 late for church due to time springing an hour later and also me being a bit tired from the weekend. Such a beautiful day I have all my windows open and since 2 out of my 4 walls are made up of windows it looks and feels great!!

The Pope died. Brilliant man really raised the bar for the next Pope. I hope my school cancels school but I doubt that... whatever happened to the truly faithful Catholic schools?? 50 years ago the school prolly would've canceled classes for a week!

Well I have plenty of papers due I should be working on... it feeels like I will never catch up.

12:44 pm - The Weekend!
Well this wek has sort of have been a blur? But I guess at the end of the semester things always get this way... time just moves so fast. So it turns out I have a lot of work due.. which seems I can't concentrate to get done.

Tonight I'm going to see a lot of friends I haven't seen in a long time should be fun.

I turned my timesheet for the past 2 weeks and because of Easter and spring break my next paycheck is only going to be $22. Ehh gonna have to stretch this current payday.

I've been having this incredible urge to see Dragon: The Bruse Lee story. Grrr... but I just can't find a Blockbuster that has it.

Turns out my sister is moving to Austin so I'm going to keep to live with her for free this summer yay!!

My attention span is going haywire nowadays... I'm going insane... middle of the semester.. blah!

5:56 pm - Easter Weekend!!
Great weekend. Drove home by myself and I had realized I forgot how much I love driving. I remember the long commutes Iw ould take evryday in the summer from San antonio to Poteet and how I kept to think about everything. It just felt so damn good. Total relaxation. I realized how much I won't mind going home to visit more this summer.... yeah on the topic of me having to visit...

I got my internship for the summer... yay!! I'm a real career woman. 40 hours a week 8 to 5. Business Casual dress attire. That's me intern at St.Ed's Human Resources. :)

I told my family was delighted to hear the news especially my father who I happen to owe quite a bit of money...

Well I had a great start to my break and my aprents decided on a spur of moment deal that we'd go to the valley and visit the infamous Our Lady of San Juan Del Valle Catholic Church. Went to confession and I let it slip to the priest I was in college and lets just say I was in there for quite a while. He was quite old fashioned.

I hadn't been alone with my parents for quite some time. I think they are getting and feeling a lot older. My dad even calls himself grumpy... which I don't disagree with. Malls are crazy in the valley... hectic... and everyone talks in spanish... even the people who work in Agaci! My parents bought me lots of earrings and 2 new shirts yay!

I saw Andy... so so good to see him. He makes me laugh so much!! His little gay comments about himself are too funny. Damn I miss him he should come here to Austin that would be great.

My nieces and nephews are too adorable. They are huge!! He had a huge Easter hunt for them and we had a huge barbecue... and I ate tons of MEAT!! mmm

I came back home and my roomate Liz gave me an adorable easter basket really really cute!

I have a lot of work right now so I'm off to do that!

3:41 pm - Tuition sucks! Yay for eatsre Break!
$21,574 is how much tuition and an apartment are going to cost me next year for St.Edward's!! Which is insane!! What are they thinking!! Grrr... I'm so upset! It works out where I have to take an additional $202 more in loans tahn last year!! INSANE!! And that is without any spending money!!

Grr.. well that has kind've brought me down... but on a way more pleasant note... I'm going home. I haven't been home since Christmas Break big stufff... gonna see all the niece and nephews that I know have to be huge by now. I'm driving by myself for the two hour trip which I'm excited about because it'll be time to think.

Gonna see Andy who I miss like crazzzzzy!!

I can't wait for Easter and I can eat my mom's tortillas and food...mmmm... I'm so excited.. lately I've been missing my family a lot. It'll be good to see them. My nieces and nephews (Anisah, Antonio, Marcus, Marissa and Sara) love me and appreciate me a lot more when I leave for a long time... they give me lots of hugs and my mom even told me that my niece Anisah who doesn't really favor me all to well said "I miss Lydia" thats huge stuff!

2:11 pm - I am so hungry and so so so broke!
Ok I'm here at school really really hungry. But the sad part is I only have 5 dollars to hold me for 11 days. It's horrible... one of my accounts has .50 cents and the other is very very negative... I'll have to take care of that later.

What to do... should I spend the 5 bucks or should I just try to hold on until I get home later and I can eat a bowl of cereal. Maybe I should start returning my books... I think I have change at home... I think now is the time to use that. Now I'm pondering whether to or not to walk to my apartment for that estimated .80 cents... Hmmm....

So sad I didn't keep to work during Spring Break so that means my paycheck is going to be cut in half!

Money sucks... I have officially made the decision (despite it could temproally drastically change my health) to hold off on buying my prescription.... let those killer cramps and crappy mood swings come... ehhhh

My sister has already lent me money this month and spent an estimated extra 100 hundred dollars on me thats not in payback form so I can't ask her... I'll just have to ask my dad...

I go home this weekend for Easter hopefully that will help out... I'm going to pig out and hopefullly I can bring some food back!! YES! The sooner I leave the sooner I eat!

Oh the joyous days of being a college student.
