1:27p - learning to play nice... milk & honey on wednesday afternoon
I remember reading in some hideously outdated etiquette guide, that when you have invited friends over, the host should ideally be doing something homely when they arrive. Well there are limits to the level of domesticity - I mean no one wants to happen on their host cleaning the toilet (plus we all know the toilet fairies do that!). So something like icing a cake is ideal. But in the summertime, when room temperature is bound to melt lemon butter icing and people are already feeling very full from the holiday season - icing sugar and freshly picked flowers suffice.
And so we have honey cake ('I baked you a honey cake!', 'It's like the Beatles song,' she said, 'But not a pie'), served with Jalna bush honey yoghurt (the container looks like something Winnie the Pooh would carry). And milk. Later on in the evening after the made-up pudding recipe failed (overconfidence resulted in a pale brown coloured lumpy soup) - we ate apple pie with mugs of milk and honey on hand.
