Indie- You tend to criticize the American public
for its lack of originality and its
corporations. You need your local indie record
shops! Forget Best Buy! You're probably a
vegitarian or vegan and you like to spend your
time at shows or drinking a vanilla soy latte
or something. Sometimes people see you as a
snob, but don't let that get to you. You just
know what's good!

Label yourself! It's all the rage in Paris and Milan!

music: "How Soon is Now?"- The Smiths
Wow... For some reason I've been like really happy lately. I'm kind of pissed though because I didn't get into Northview... So my mom and I are moving, but before we do my therapist is going to see if she can "do something else" for us. See, she tried to talk the guy who is in charge of something important into open enrolling me at Northview... I really want to go there. So my mom said that we're moving so I can go there. Ain't she a doll? I really do love my mom... Her boyfriend just moved out and she's been really depressed lately, but I guess it's good in a way because we're going back to the way things were when I was younger and I was a lot happier, even though her boyfriend didn't really bother me all that much. I guess I just always felt awkward because I was always the third wheel. Anyhow, I'm trying to make her feel better and stuff and I just got $10 in the mail from my grandpa so I'm going to buy her some chocolates or something for Valentine's day... Organic chocolates, though. Haha... I'm a nature nerd!!! Woo! Oh man... I hate Valentine's day. I'm gonna like get a guy and be like "I'll give you a nickel if you give me your heart." Hahahahaha. That would be great. I think having a beau would be really nice. But I don't! And I'm happy anyways! Well, I have to do music terms for Mr. Song! so I have to go. Oh!! I got my hair cut! It's short! And crazy cute! Oh! And if you're on myspace.com add me! my email is zoe4peace2727@hotmail.com. And if you're not on myspace.com, join! It's way better than friendster! Hahaha... I was just looking for the remote for my stereo and it was in my sock drawer!!! Hahahahahahaha. The Smiths make really sexy music.

music: "Orange Crush"- R.E.M.
Just in case you're super super bored...

Have you ever wondered how your household products got their warning labels on them? They were tested on animals. Researchers all over the world are spraying and squirting animals with different products that humans will someday use. They use animals first so no humans are harmed. Animal testing is a very controversial subject. While most of the things about it are bad, there is a plus side. Let’s take a closer look at animal testing.
You are probably wondering what actually happens to the animals that get tested. One of the major kinds of tests conducted is called the Lethal Dose 50%, or the LD50. In this test, a number of animals are given a lethal substance and half or more will die. Rabbits are usually used for this test, but sometimes rats, mice, or dogs are used. Substances that can be inhaled and soaked up by the lungs are sprayed in a chamber. The animals stay in the chamber for about four hours. The researchers observe the animals for two weeks to watch for toxic effects and those that haven’t died already are killed and dissected. (Animal Liberation, Pg. 1-2)
Another kind of LD50 test that is done besides the inhalation test is the dermal test. The back of a rabbit is shaved raw. The test substance is applied to the patch of skin and kept in contact with the skin for twenty-four hours. The rabbit is observed for fourteen days. If any die, the LD50 dose is measured. The researchers do not do any more tests if no toxic effects are observed with a dose of two milligrams per kilogram. (Animal Liberation, Pg. 2)
There is also an oral LD50 test that is conducted. One dose of the substance is via the mouth. The animals are observed for two weeks. Longer term tests are done by feeding the animals a smaller dose everyday for ninety days and observing the effects. (Animal Liberation, Pg. 2)
Another kind of major test that is done is called the Draize Eye/Skin Irritancy test. Albino rabbits are used most frequently because they have insufficient tear ducts. They also have sensitive skin. Their eyes are held open with pliers and many break their necks as they try to escape from the firm grasp of the pliers. No anesthesia is used during the test. The skin test is done similarly to the LD50 dermal test. The substances used in Draize tests are usually not as fast acting as the ones tested in the LD50. The back of the rabbit is shaved. The substance is applied and kept in contact for twenty-four hours. (Mercy for Animals, Pg. 2)
The tests that are done are cruel and inhumane. The “side-effects” with the tests include abdominal pain, cramping, convulsions, vomiting (only in some species), diarrhea, paralysis, breathing difficulties, bleeding ulcers, and eventually death. (Mercy for Animals, Pg. 2)
There is actually a plus side to animal testing. It allows products to be tested for safety without harming humans.
After learning about the negative side, I wondered why animal testing is still done. “No law requires animal testing for cosmetic and household products,” states Mercy for Animals, Pg. 2. Animals’ systems are much different from humans’ systems and what has an effect on an animal will most likely not have the same effect on humans and vice versa. Animal testing is also more expensive. Most of the tests done aren’t even scientific. The results vary from animal to animal and even from laboratory to laboratory. It all depends on how the researcher observed the animals. (Anchor, Amy Blount, Pg. 109-110)
The alternative tests are much more humane than animal testing. The first kind of test is the culture test. The SkinTex/EyeTex test takes the place of the Draize Eye/Skin Irritancy test. A protein culture is mixed with the product and the amount of damage done to the culture is how the safety is determined. The Neutral Red Assay test exposed living human cells to the product. The product is dyed red and the amount of dye the cells absorbed is how they determine the safety. The Skin squared test uses human skin cells to build a three-dimensional structure to test for product toxicity. The Microtex System used luminescent bacteria to test for damage. (Copeland, Kelly, Pg. 3)
Clearly animal testing is cruel and inhumane. With all the other alternative tests available to companies, it is a mystery why they still harm helpless animals. There are things that we can do to stop animal testing and we need to start doing them now.
No life again!

I was just watching this independent film/documentary on PBS about this guy who ran away when he was 4, got kidnapped, returned to his home, his mom beat him to "purify" him, and then got sexually abused for like 5 years and now he is this really cool artsy guy who I would really love to talk to. I wish more people watched movies like that. I think there would be less fuck-ups or something... I mean, to have a childhood that brutal and turn out completely fine... Oh and then he was sitting with his mom on her death bed and her last words ever were "I did what I knew..." Anyways, I thought it was an amazing film. Everyone watch Independent Lens on PBS on Tuesdays at 10PM. Good show.

Friday night was soo fun. Flindy Locker is a kickin' rad game show host. She gets on her set and she's like, "Hi! Today we're going to play a game! The game is called THE BREATHING GAME! You have to breath nice and smooth. The use of inhalers is not permitted. At a random point during the game, harmful chemicals will be released into the air. Let's get breathing!" Yeah... Don't ask. So Friday night Kelsey Ozuk and I got baked under a pine tree in old people's back yard in the snow. Then Kelsey thought we were in Cleveland. Then the lights were getting closer, so we ran towards the road and walked home and talked about Jan Brady and Flindy Locker. Our feet were crazy heavy. And Kelsey fell flat on her face in the snow and didn't move but she was laughing really hard. We had to get the shoe gloves. Then we went inside and I ate a lot. Last night I went with Kelsy Nagle to her boyfriend's basketball game. Then we went to go see a movie with her boyfriend and his friend. The movie was called "Torque." Yeah... It was about cars. It was pretty bad, but I guess it's good if you want to go to a movie and make fun of the acting and how ironic everything always is. But bad movie or not, I was out of my house and with humans. It was a social life.
