you are released into the greater world
    First Impressions: Spiral Knights

If you were one of the lucky few who grabbed a Spiral Knights beta key recently, then you will appreciate the joy I feel when talking about this game. It's simply a toy -- a ray-gun or a tin robot. It does what it is supposed to do and does it on a variety of machines without many issues. It is mechanized fun, simple and to the point, yet somehow also endearing and even sweet.

Perhaps the tiny robots and adorably destructive weaponry implemented by the folks at Three Rings help to bind the game to our hearts, because I found myself worrying that the little robot I was aiding would never find the materials he needed to escape from the dreadful gearworks and steam engines I was forced to investigate.

Confused? Well, go log in and try it out or click past the cut to hear my explanation!

In Spiral Knights, brought to us by Puzzle Pirates' Three Rings, you play the role of a stocky robot, armed to the chin with guns, swords and bombs. Customization is not very robust at the beginning, but thanks to my press-pass goodies, I found that customization truly opens up as you gain more gear. After I was done looking through all the cool stuff I had, I decided that I liked the volcano set of armor the best. Soon after, I resembled one mean little hot-spirited robot.

After going through a series of basic tutorials, you are released into the greater world. If you've played lobby-style games like Guild Wars that feature open social areas that act as hubs into content, then you will be familiar with some of the gameplay behind Spiral Knights. You can run around town meeting new players and selling items and then jump into one of the many strange clockwork dungeons by yourself or with a group. If you go alone, the game makes a group for you automatically, and other players are automatically joined with you. At first I thought that this would be annoying -- being thrust into groups with strangers -- but it worked smoothly, and most players wanted to play the game correctly. After all, there's nothing more satisfying than chopping or shooting your way through scores of blocks and enemies.

And there shall be chopping and shooting -- a lot of chopping and shooting. Fortunately, it's the kind of gameplay that makes you sit back with a cold one (in my case, a hot tea) and just go for it. There are many different varieties of monsters and puzzles to solve, and new ones are just another descent into the gearworks away. On one of the latest nights I played, I auto-joined a group that was either farther down than I had ever been or simply more

experienced, such that I found myself on a graveyard-themed level, surrounded by much tougher zombies and ghouls. With a hit of the space bar, I switched from my sword and shield to my blaster and found myself walking backward while slamming lasers bolts into slowly moving undead. At one very hectic point, I did not think we would survive, but somehow we did. Unfortunately, I had to log out for the night but promised to come back. It was, literally, a blast.

CCP depends on players to guide development over ever
Massively's EVE Online CSM 6 candidate roundup

Beginning life as a humble indie MMO development studio, CCP Games was always noted for its close relationship to the players of its flagship game EVE Online. That relationship diminished a lot over time as both the size of the playerbase and the scale of EVE's development grew to immense proportions. Today CCP depends on players to guide development over ever, but it needs a lens through which to focus feedback from such a huge community of players in to a form that the team can use. The democratically chosen Council of Stellar Management (CSM) is that lens.

Fifty-seven players submitted their applications to join EVE's chosen player council this year, and all this week, players have been voting to pick who will represent them in discussions with CCP. With so lots of candidates in the jogging and only two more days to make up your mind, it can be hard to pick one individual from the list. To help you pick, Massively has compiled a full list of every applicant in the jogging along with a short message about his or her campaign and handy links to obtainable campaign resources.

When you are prepared to vote, follow this link to the voting page, log in, and click the vote button to the right of your selected candidate. Keep in mind to get your vote in before March 23rd when polls close! The results will be published on March 30th, and we'll find out who will be representing the EVE playerbase to CCP for the approaching year.

This is a huge year for CCP, which is gearing up to finally release Incarna and its revolutionary jogging in stations feature. It is imperative that the sixth council be made up of sensible individuals who can deliver reasonable feedback on Incarna and represent player issues without bias or personal ambition. The past few years have shown that the CSM is not usually able to push ideas and solutions at CCP. Candidates who have an interest in making specific changes have been unable to follow through on campaign promises, while those able to representing the whole playerbase in an unbiased manner have made a huge contribution to the council.

    Why ought to I vote?

There has been a growing perception over the past two months or so that the CSM is being taken seriously at CCP. Several ex-employees of CCP have even entered their names in the jogging, recognising that they may be better able to improve the game as part of a player-elected council than they could have as an worker within the company. The CSM can make a actual difference to EVE, and every vote absolutely counts.

In this three-page candidate roundup, they have split the 57 candidates up in to the same two groups as last year -- returning members, new campaigners, and comparatively unknown characters with small campaign material or who are not taking the election seriously. Next to each campaigner, we have included a brief synopsis of his or her campaign information and links to any relevant campaign materials that might help you make your decision.

Last year, 17 members of earlier council sessions submitted their applications for candidacy. This was due chiefly to the removal of the mandatory two-term limit, which encouraged historicallyin the past successful candidates to give the council another shot. This year, only two candidates have served as members of earlier councils. Trebor Daehdoow, a 52 year elderly veteran of the programming industry, played an integral role in the fifth CSM and is standing for reelection this year. Meissa Anunthiel has served in the council a whopping two times now -- as an alternate in CSM 2 and 4, and a full member of councils 3 and 5.

Helen Highwater has played the role of alternate in CSM 4 and 5 and is hoping that this experience will be useful in a full council stool. Similarly, Issler Dainze served as a full member in CSM 2 and an alternate in CSM 3. They didn't recieve votes to get a council or alternate stool in the earlier term, but is back in the jogging this year for another attempt. Sokratesz was a full member of CSM 4 and 5 and is hoping to be re-elected for a third term jogging.

Perhaps the largest surprise this year is that several ex-CCP employees have signed up to the council. Veteran game designer CCP Abathur, also called Seleene, was present within CCP in the coursework of the formation of the council and sees it as the only way left to get the players message across to the company's management. CCP Lingorm of the QA Engineering team has also applied, hoping that his experiences within CCP will give him a competitive edge.

Torchlight XBLA launch provided Runic its best sales day ever
Runic Games announced today that last week's launch day of Torchlight's solid, gamepad-friendly Xbox Live Arcade port, was the company's "best sale day in its history."

Torchlight XBLA launch provided Runic its best sales day ever

"We're very excited to bring Torchlight to the 360, & have been gratified by the positive reaction," said President Travis Baldree. "It's affirming to know that console players love this style as much as they do. They think the experience translates much to the couch."

Runic is currently working on Torchlight 2 for PC, which will "probably" launch in July. We are sure Blizzard is taking note of Torchlight's console success for its upcoming Diablo 3.

The unannounced downloadable content (DLC) for Mass Effect 2 has yet to be confirmed by Bioware, but that hasn t stopped activity on their official Facebook page. The developer has began to release screenshots of the update, dubbed Arrival , for every 750,000 impressions received. So far there s been one images released, here s the scoop.

Mass Effect 2 DLC leaked in Bioware screenshots

Last last month the first screenshot of the Arrival DLC was leaked by an update to the Playstation 3 version of the game. Follow the leak, Bioware released a screenshot on their Facebook page, promising to release a second picture if 750,000 impressions were received. With fan support that objective was reached, leading to today s screenshot. Without official word from the developer confirming the DLC, these images open the door to serious speculation.

Assuming the update checks out & they track down a release date, what do you predict is in store for Mass Effect 2 Arrival ? Go ahead & give it your best shot, we ll compare notes when the update is released.

Mercenary heroes are mostly a vanity item
The addition of Guild Wars Mercenary Hero Packs to the NCsoft store is the latest step in ArenaNet's work to highlight Guild Wars "microtransactions." (I am ambivalent about using the word microtransactions in this context -- "micro" in my eyes says under 10 dollars.)

Flameseeker Chronicles: Is ArenaNet approaching the pay-to-win line?

The mercenary heroes are probably the most controversial addition to the current store to date, and the continuing debate fascinated me. I can see both sides of the argument, so I thought I'd take today and explore this new addition to the store and what it means. Follow along after the jump and let's look at the perceived pros and cons of the latest not-very-micro-transaction in the NCsoft store!

    What is the issue here?

The one main arguments against Mercenary Hero Packs are that they are very expensive and that they provide an in-game advantage to players who spend real-world money. I personally feel that the cost points are reasonable, but that word "personally" is the core issue with this argument. It is impossible to lay down a blanket definition of what is a nice value for someone's entertainment dollar, because it is a individual decision. You might feel that $44.99 for two mercenary heroes is a immense waste of money and a complete ripoff, but there's also people out there who feel that $44.99 for a game is a immense waste of money and a complete ripoff. None of you is wrong until you try to apply your personal feelings on the matter to everyone.

For this reason -- while I cannot call this a microtransaction with a straight face -- I view the argument as basically solved, if not moot.

This raises my next query: So what? You can argue that there is an unfair advantage because those who pay up can run dual Discord heroes, for example, but dual Discord -- and any other meta build -- has not always been around. They cleared elite areas before Discord was flavor of the month. Hard mode existed before that. People played the game fine without meta builds and will continue to do so after the current ones fall out of favor and new ones come in. Mercenary heroes are mostly a vanity item -- you can run along with the one you love alts, and you can enjoy a double scoop of regardless of the current stylish build is.

The argument that there is a gameplay advantage is much more complicated. One Massively Overpowered member referred to it as the "advantage of choice," a phrase that cuts to the chase of the discussion better than any I have heard. Need to run with five Necro heroes in lieu of three? No issue, that will be $19.99 . Players who break out the credit cards absolutely have more hero choices than those who don't.

However, in the event you don't have them, you are still fine. I plan to buy at least three mercenary heroes, but I haven't yet and don't find my gameplay delayed at all. I usually play with guildmates or alliancemates, but I have been spending plenty of quality time with seven-hero parties to receive a feel for them and have blown through a first rate amount of content with them. I view the whole thing as a typical cash-shop setup. ArenaNet gave us something fantastic free in seven-hero parties and offered something even shinier and more alluring for a cost. The cost point is definitely higher than what we are used to in typical money shops, but you are getting up to two permanent, account-wide convenience and vanity items. Overall, it is not an outrageous setup.

Don't misunderstand me -- I like me some meta builds, and my template window includes over some of them. I don't view them as the be-all and end-all of Guild Wars gameplay.

One Shots: They cannot cease here. This is bat country!

Not all is bright and sunny in the lands of Telara. Never mind the rifts popping up all over the place -- there's corners of the world in RIFT that are basically naturally eerie and foreboding -- when you recognize this area is populated with giant spiders, vampire bats, and other monsters. Today's spooky screenshot comes to us from Massively reader Tizmah, who writes in to tell us of his recent adventures: "Hey, this is Tizmah. Lord of the Rings Online: "Solofication" is the word of the day

Find something worth sharing on your recent adventures?

Ever since Turbine modified the first volume of its epic storyline for Lord of the Rings Online, players have eagerly anticipated the same revamp of Mines of Moria's Volume II. With the upcoming Echoes of the Dead patch, this will in fact happen, and Turbine's prepared with another illuminating dev diary to shed some light on the method on the "solofication" of Volume II.

It turns out that reworking Volume II wasn't as simple as scaling down mob health or slapping Inspired Greatness (a huge buff) on characters. Every stage of the journey -- which contained plenty of huge group instances -- had to be reconsidered, and Turbine's Bob Hess details how the content team broke down the journey, adjusted it and then reassembled it to be a more solo-friendly experience. "Overall, I feel as though the changes made will permit a huge number of players who historicallyin the past could not proceed through the epic to see the remainder of the story unfold," Hess said.

Volume II's solofication includes taking battle instances and transforming them in to skirmishes, adjusting the levels of the different books and making quest objectives simpler. You can read the whole editorial over at LotRO's net site, and don't miss out on three new screenshots from Echoes of the Dead below!

the clan intrigue is intended to serve as a form of meta-game

GDC 2011: World of Tanks' clan wars showcase player & developer passion

MMO devs never play their own games, right? That is the conventional player wisdom, anyway, & it is often found on forums, guild chats, & vent channels after a  painful nerf. Apparently the devs at Wargaming.net didn't get that memo, though, as our GDC sit-down with Victor Kislyi illustrated.

Kislyi is the driving force behind World of Tanks, the World War II-based action MMO currently shattering industry concurrent user records as its Russian beta steamrolls the free-to-play competition.

Not only does Kislyi play his own game, but she plays (& discusses) it with such passion that you cannot help but root for the scrappy title & the team from Belarus that is bringing it to life. Join us after the cut to see what Kislyi had to say about the upcoming clan wars implementation as well as player politics.

If it all sounds a bit intense, it is, & there is a positive competitive fire (tinged with a small bit of nice ol' fashioned nationalism) that permeates the World of Tanks Russian beta. Passion oozes from the pores of the game's devs & plenty of of its players, & far of the emotion manifests itself in the recently released clan wars mechanic.

Not only do the devs from Wargaming.net play World of Tanks, but apparently they play it with such skill that some beta testers questioned whether everything was on the up & up. Kislyi relates an anecdote in which the devs, using an assortment of undergeared rank 9 tanks (10 is the game's current max), managed to capture & hold their hometown of Minsk against a superior player force. Due to accusations of impropreity, Kislyi & his fellow devs regretfully opted to surrender Minsk & forego further forays in to the game's white-knuckle clan wars in order to prevent additional hard feelings.

        runes of magic gold
        buy wow gold

"Clan wars is the gem, the beauty, of the game," Kislyi says, & it is part strategy game (with both micro- & macro-management aspects) & part action-MMO. Kislyi makes comparisons with the Total War series as well as Sid Meier's genre-defining Civilization titles when referencing World of Tanks' clan wars map & illustrating how huge player alliances can fight for control over various portions of the game's Russian & European fronts. & when Kislyi says huge, she actually means huge, as the current beta routinely features upwards of 30,000 players simultaneously duking it out. Apart from EVE Online, Kislyi notes, the "massive" label is a misnomer when applied to other MMOs.

Since the Russian beta debuted, World of Tanks' concurrent user numbers have increased every day, with 125,000 peak users  yesterday. In Russia, the game is "bigger than World of Warcraft, Ideal World, Lineage II, & any other game, browser or client-based, money-wise, people-wise, CCU (concurrent user)-wise, or anything-wise," Kislyi says.

Much like the corp politics of EVE, the clan intrigue is intended to serve as a form of meta-game, with backstabbing, alliances, & the rise & fall of empires occuring outside the game as well as on the extensive battle maps. "Most of this [meta]-game is already happening behind the scenes; [players] don't use the program to actually communicate but  Skype, e mail, etc., & the stakes are high," Kislyi says. The clan wars map is also browser-based, the better to be viewed at any time (& anywhere) by a dedicated playerbase that desires to keep tabs on the game even when not logged in.

Those 125,000 people are broken down in to 100-member clans, all of them scrapping for control of the European map. The clan wars rules are intentionally straightforward &  simplistic, as Wargaming.net is aiming to give players the tools & the territory & then get out of their way.

The popularity of clan wars & the initial inability of the European map to meet the overwhelming player demand caught Wargaming.net a bit off guard, Kislyi says. As a result, the dev team is looking to implement additional fronts including Siberian Russia, North Africa, & finally, America, the Middle East, & other locations around the globe. Thirty-thousand clan members are all trying to fight simultaneously, Kislyi enthuses, but plenty of of them are having to wait since the map territories basically aren't large  yet.

The game is quickly expanding beyond Wargaming.net's original designs, & the devs couldn't be happier about that fact. "We no longer control this game, this meta-game. They gave them a few simple rules, & from that time on, they are doing the history. Thirty-thousand players are fighting  almost every day," Kislyi says.

    Map wipes

They asked about the likelihood of map wipes & whether there were any safeguards in place in the event of a single all-powerful clan dominating the region. Wargaming.net does reserve the right to start fresh, & Kislyi was speedy to point out that World of Tanks is still a beta build, but she also sounds confident that player politics will rule the day & ultimately prevent large-scale domination by a single group. History, as well as other games, has taught us as much, she said, before she intimated that the devs will also be positive that the clan wars map is never truly stabilized in terms of player control.

    Territorial release plan

They were also curious about Wargaming.net's designs for the official release, & more specifically, whether everyone from various regions around the globe will be playing together. Kislyi said that the first version of clan wars will likely be exclusive to the European version of the game & will carryover a beta tag similar to the current Russian version.

"It's not a game; it is a service," Kislyi explains. "We would be dull if they did not [foster community] in America & Europe. It is lagging behind time-wise  because Belarus is our homeland."

They also asked about community interplay, specifically how (or whether) Wargaming.net is planning on fostering a tight-knit American community to match that of the Russian beta (where developer & clan leader interplay is commonplace). Kislyi says that the American & European game infrastructure is a bit behind at the moment basically due to time constraints.

Speaking of homelands, & given the emphasis on clans, backstabbing, & national pride, they were curious as to whether any of the in-game politics (& the hard feelings that exist already between several beta clans) stemmed from real-life political & social conflicts. Kislyi pointed out the fact that World of Tanks takes great care to populate its teams with members from all nationalities (meaning you won't be fighting random battles against entirely Spanish or Russian groups). Wargaming.net's mod team also "ruthlessly & strictly crushes references to historical & current politics" in the game & on the forums (i.e., any mention of neo-Nazis will likely earn you a swift exit).

this promises to be a fun holiday for all ages
Massively's guide to Valentine's Day festivities

Ah spring! 'Tis the time when young men and women's thoughts turn to love -- or at least scoring some nifty holiday-themed loot! This year there's quite a bit going on. Some events are old familiar ones that have stood the test of time. Others offer new twists and things to do for those who have been there, done that. If you aren't feeling the love bug biting, there's even the odd anti-Valentine's-type event, perfect for those who would rather rain destruction down on the head of anyone foolish enough to approach him with anything heart-shaped or pink. Curious as to what's going on? Check out our listing below -- and feel free to chime in if you know of a fun event others should check out!

Rip out your Fallen Earth character's heart for Valentine's Day (February 11th-13th)
What's better than surviving a nuclear holocaust and wandering your way across a blasted brown landscape rife with societal collapse? Why, sharing said wanderings with someone you love, of course (or at least, someone you lust after in that we've-got-to-do-this-for-the-future-of-mankind sort of way). In a novel spin on the traditional mid-February holiday, Icarus Studios is presenting Fallen Earth's Valentine's Day Massacre event, and clones everywhere can literally offer their hearts as a sign of affection (and a +3 stamina buff).
Vindictus spreads the love with new update and holiday (February 1st-15th)
Quirky events have quickly become one of Vindictus' staples. Right now players can participate in V-Day events for special rewards. If fishing and chocolate hunting isn't your bag, you can simply purchase a Valentine's Package at the Supply Depot for "sexy Valentine's themed Inner Armor." Cute undies, in other words. Valentine's events will end after the 15th, so players are encouraged to partake sooner rather than regret it later.
Time for love in Final Fantasy XI (February 1st-15th)
Valentine's Day is almost here, that special time of year when you attempt to distill the essence of a romantic relationship into chocolate form. And if you were hoping to escape from the day within Vana'diel, your efforts are rather misdirected -- Valentione's Day coincides nicely with the holiday in the real world, with just as much saccharine summation of liaisons in Final Fantasy XI.
Invite friends to the Wizard101 Friendship Festival (February 1st-15th)
Valentine Heartsong hereby summons you to Wizard101's Friendship Festival! She's set up in the Wizard City Shopping District in the Spiral, selling special holiday items and pets. You can also download and print out special Friendship Invitations to bring your real-life friends into the fun, which earns you Crowns to spend!
Heroes and villains: Spring fling has sprung! (February 10th-March 6th)
Put on your best costume, catch up with DJ Zero in Pocket D, run those holiday events, and get your special event swag. From badges and costume pieces to temporary powers, there are lots of goodies to be had in Paragon City and the Rogue Isles.
Aphrodite upsets the balance in DC Universe Online (dates TBA)
The fighting between Wonder Woman and Circe has upset Aphrodite, who thinks everyone should just get along. Players will get a chance to enjoy special holiday PvP and PvE missions as they spread the love -- yes, even to the bad guys. Hopefully enough players' taking part in the holiday events will help to soothe Aphrodite's unpleasant mood!
Gaia Online offers up a virtual space for Valentine's fun (ongoing until February 16th)
Whether you're in love with love or can't stand the smooshy, sappy stuff, Gaia Online has you covered. Come to its specially themed area to profess your passion or pshaw the poetic pandering. With new items, costumes, and more, Gaians can show their pro or anti-Valentine's spirit off to all around.
Free Realms' Festival of Hearts needs you to find the meaning of love (ongoing, end date TBA)
Oh no, things aren't all happiness and love in the lands of Free Realms! Stone Heart is trying to crush everyone's lovey-dovey holiday spirit -- and players will need to team up to stop him from enacting his diabolical plans. With special quests, items, and more, this promises to be a fun holiday for all ages!
Erollisi Day returns to EverQuest II (February 8th-20th)
It's time for love in EverQuest II, as we've known and celebrated so many times before -- only this time there are new quests and rewards in the mix! Players can check out Total Eclipse of the Heart and Romantic Flower Petals to get in the spirit. Head for Antonica, Commonlands, Qeynos or Freeport to get started.
Love isn't just for the Ewoks in Star Wars Galaxies (February 10th-March 10th)
Even though the Ewoks live in fiercely guarded tribal units, they often treat outsiders with warmth. They are curious by nature, influencing their leader, Chief Chirpa, to open the Festival of Love to outsiders, allowing them to partake in the festivities. Head for Tyrena, Kaadara, and the Southern Ewok Lake Village before March 10th to enjoy the event -- and maybe score some great new event items like furniture, schematics, paintings and more!
It's all about the droids in Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures (dates TBA)
From candy-dispensing mouse droids to adorable astromechs, Clone Wars Adventures' virtual world celebration offers a little something for padawan and Jedi alike. With an event that promises the appearance of Cupid Clone Troopers and the HE-4RT droids for Imperials, how can you resist    silkroad gold,
        lineage 2 adena,
        best aion kinah seller,
        buy tibia gold,
        cheap WOW GOLD US
    ?
Be the well-dressed Daeva in Aion's valentine finery (items already available)
When it comes to fashionably fabulous avatars, Aion's daevas are definitely up there. For the holiday, NCsoft is offering a Star Crossed Lovers Pack which offers an ensemble, a garland or mask, and a cap. Add on a stack of hot pink or red dyes for your gear and you'll be set for any holiday costume contests that pop up. No word on an in-game event to go with the new cash shop items.

Valentines is just a part of the huge Spring Festival in TLBB (ongoing until February 22nd)
ChangYou's TLBB is offering those who are feeling the love a chance to connect by shooting each other with Cupid's arrows. If it takes, you might land a great buff. For those who are married in-game, there are special treats for you, such an an eternal ring and the chance to get a heart-shaped aura -- but that's just a small part of the overall Spring Festival event.
RuneScape kicks love in the face with its bloodthirsty Wilderness PvP Massacre weekend (February 12th & 13th)
For those of you who can't stand all the cutesy fun, join Jagex and the population of RuneScape for a weekend-long PvP smackdown in honor of the Wilderness' return to the game. For those who don't feel like fighting, you can use your market and crafting skills to take part in supplying the fighters and make some fat bank. Everybody wins!
Allods Online offers hearts and candy (through February 14th; check site for details)
From candy grams and free kisses, Allods Online is looking to reward its players via a series of contests to coincide with Valentine's Day. You'll need to get those entries in soon and make sure to log in to get your goodies, as this event will be over almost as quickly as it started.

Masthead Studios revealed not only a list of key features
We've known for some time that Masthead Studios' upcoming single-server sci-fi sandbox Earthrise was planned for retail release on February 4th. Until now, however, they haven't known exactly what would be in that preliminary release and what features won't make the final cut. In an announcement today, Masthead Studios revealed not only a list of key features they'll be guaranteeing to provide at launch, but also a roadmap for further development and releases all year long. The announcement confirms Earthrise's release in less than two weeks time on February 4th, with a substantial commitment to continued development on specific features in the following months.

Earthrise launch roadmap reveals a commitment to continued development

    Key new game mechanics

The list of key features promised for launch is as follows:
•A unique post-apocalyptic setting where the cloned remnants of mankind battle to survive and rebuild.
•Highly customizable characters with over 100 different skills, abilities and tactics.
    •No artificial imposed "class" restrictions.
•Fast-paced, action-packed combat featuring dynamic targeting, adaptive power armor and hundreds of high-tech weapons.
•Sophisticated player-versus-player (PvP) mechanics that let players fight for the established order, join the revolutionary underground, or carve their own bloody path as an independent criminal.
•Character progression that keeps players advancing in their development with no limits.
•An advanced market-based economy with in-game supply and demand based on player activities and interactions.
•Deep crafting mechanics that enable players to design and manufacture unique items from blueprints and raw resources.
Skip past the cut for a glance at Masthead's development schedule for 2011 also a first look at what they can expect to be introduced throughout the approaching year.

March will be a bumper month for Earthrise fans, introducing a whole pile of new content and features. The key mechanic being introduced is the opening of siege territories for player conquest. This feature is ready to go, but is being deliberately delayed until March to give people time to build up their characters, form guilds and get used to the game's combat mechanics. than opening siege territories at launch and so dropping players in at the deep finish, Masthead is giving guilds a chance to prepare for the inevitable land rush. Conquest territories will cover over half of the Earthrise map, which is certain to make preparation for the upcoming war a top priority for most players.

Masthead's plan is to provide several updates per month containing new quests, game content, bug fixes and server balance changes. In addition, several new features will be added each month as the developer continues to add mechanics players expect from a sci-fi sandbox surroundings. First on the schedule is an exploration method that allows players to salvage materials on their travels and use them for crafting. From launch up until the exploration method goes live, crafting materials will temporarily drop as loot in lieu. This feature is expected to go live at some point in February, giving the team under a month to create the feature while dealing with any launch issues the game has.

    New content and customisation options

Also scheduled for release in March is a series of new combat skills, tactics and crafting blueprints. Although the game boasts over 250 combat abilities at launch, the development team has recognised the potential to add more one time the game goes live and players have a nice chance to test out combat. Recognising that the game in its current pre-release state could use some more crafting options, additional blueprints for the customisation of craftable items will be high on the agenda. March will also bring a major graphics engine update, which is aimed at improving players' frame-rates, smoothing out rough spots in client performance and improving the game's shadow effects.

April is certain to be a popular month, with the introduction of personalised, player-crafted vehicles. Players are certain to want to stock up on materials before April hits so they can be among the first to own one of these new vehicles. Following on from that, other features planned for release in 2011 include scattered resource mines patrolled by monsters. on killing the monsters and freeing up those mines, the resources contained in them will become available on the market. If Masthead Studios delivers on this development roadmap and continues to release several patches per month with new content, Earthrise is certain to stay on everyone's radar for a long time to come.

Wizard101 reveals the truth behind the green blob in space
TERA video shows off Sinestral Manor

Lately it's been calm on the Arborean front, as Massively hasn't posted any new TERA-related info for the better part of one weeks. Happily, Game Informer is here to quench that drought courtesy of a new gameplay video. While it's a small on the short side, the clip does feature new in-game footage & a glimpse inside the creepy bowels of the Vampir Mansion (also known as Sinestral Manor).

Wizard101 reveals the truth behind the green blob in space

You might recall the curiously spelled Vampirs from one of all together Entertainment's screenshot of the week featurettes, & you might even be a bit puzzled (as they were) at the distinct lack of Vampirs to be present in Game Informer's Vampire Mansion tour. That said, there were lots of other beasties on hand, including a fearsome boss featured over the last half of the clip. There's also lots of combat to be found, so head over to the Game Informer website & take a look.

Does it look kind of like a giant green frog? Well, that's exactly right.

in the event you follow astronomy or like tales about giant green things, you probably were aware of last week's photograph from the Hubble telescope showcasing a huge green blob. It's a known spot in space, a huge region in which new stars are being formed -- although why stars would be forming out in the midst of nowhere has researchers baffled. But researchers from Wizard101 have helpfully taken the chance to dispel the mystery, making it clear exactly what the region of space actually is.

The discovery was made feasible by use of facilities in the ancient undersea world of Celestia, but it still raises various new questions. some of the wizard researchers speculate that the huge frog might be a powerful minion of Morganthe, while others are positive the frog's appearance is basically a joke by a wizard with more time than common sense. regardless of the case, Wizard101 has helped provide us with the answer to a great scientific mystery, & for that they can all rest a small not as hard.

The Potion of Treasure Finding, which is newly released in World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, lets you sometimes find extra treasure from monsters in Mount Hyjal, Vash'jir, Deepholm, Twilight Highlands & Uldum for 1 hour. It seems to work well.

Potion of Treasure Finding: Money-making or News-making instrument?

somebody posted up a thread on definite forum, saying that they got items worth 1500G in Deepholm within one hour after drinking a Potion of Treasure Finding. According to him, the Potion of Treasure only costs 150G, if 30 chests are obtained, each of which only needs to equally contain 4G, 4 Cloth & some Volatiles (Volatile Air, Volatile Fire, etc). In this way, this potion can produce gains six times or triple as lots of as costs. It indeed returns a immense profit.

Recently, lots of a player is discussing this potion as well as a number of them speak highly of its nice effect. Therefore, the potion was one time priced very high. Some even carried out an experiment & proved that about 12 chests were reaped within an hour. definitely, it depends on one's grinding speed. In your view, is this potion a true artifact or hyped up by potion merchants? they can only say, the Potion of Treasure Finding is effective, helping you harvest ample extra items. However, it is difficult to accomplish profits which are six times or triple costs. Well, what do you reckon of this potion?

The places where the player was grinding mobs are shown below:

make the content of the game looks more dynamic
Star Wars: The elderly Republic Dev Talks Cinematic Design

in case you are a MMO player, then Star Wars: The elderly Republic would be one of the games you must pay attention to this year. Recently, Paul Marino who done cinematic design work on Mass Effect 2 has joined the star wars team to be a cinematic designer. In his latest official weblog, Paul Marino details the main responsibility of being a cinematic designer in the development team – to make the content of the game looks more dynamic to the best of his ability.

The inclusion of Cinematic Design is what sets The elderly Republic apart from other MMO games. than being led by a disjointed, text-driven narrative, the Player is part of a dynamic plot in The elderly Republic. In conversations, they can show those subtle moments where characters interact with and affect one another; where choices matter. Do they kill the Sith acolyte? Do they spare him? Will he show up later in our character’s path to be handled? Or will he fight alongside us, supporting us in the most crucial of times? These choices are gameplay, introduced in cinematic form. Sure, they could be made through the use of elementary point-and-click, text-only interface, but the reward of our choices would be passed over and the player would rarely fully experience the impact of those decisions.

In a word, the create team hope that their developed scenes will impress players for a long time and what they are continuing to reveal in the near future will make players feel excited about the game.

We have made it past their pitiful walls
This quest took us back to Lordsmarch Plaza to inquire in to some unusual noises. they arrived just in time for the ground to shake beneath our feet also a corner of the Plaza to collapse, revealing a group of Droaam soldiers who announced, "We have made it past their pitiful walls!" Of coursework they fought them off -- them, and all of their buddies who kept leaping out of the newly made giant hole in the ground until there were no more emerging.

    Undermine

The next obvious step was to see where they had come from, so in to the chasm they went. The other finish contained a surprisingly elaborate tunnel filled with walkways and exploding Kobolds. No, . The quests from here on out are all about demolitions, and things are blowing up everywhere -- including some of these Kobolds, so look out. they soon encountered a named foe: Kaboom the Kobold. they were close to taking him down when he wised up and bolted, leaving behind a tiny gift. No, not that kind of gift -- he left a mine.

This mine introduced me to what will definitely be heaven for mechanically inclined Rogues. This mine, along with all the others in these quests, can be disarmed just like any other trap. Be cautious approaching them, though. Just like the mines that player Rogues set, these can be set off by the vibration of your footsteps, and they hurt. Be sure to sneak when you are approaching them.

I noticed some fun goings-on here and there as they tracked Kaboom through the tunnels: Kobold workers were feeling a small rebellious and beginning to demand more rights. This sense of fun and silliness in the small details is a huge part of what makes DDO what it is, so keep your eyes peeled as you progress. You'll be glad you did.

they caught up with Kaboom, but he evaded us again by making a bigger explosion and sealing us in. This was the introduction to the explosive part of the quest. they found a box of demolition charges that (to my delight) turned out to be usable by us. From then on, the quest was a series of introductions to fun new elements. The demolition charges can generate some seriously impressive pyrotechnics, Earth Elementals have a new look that reflects the rock they emerged from, there's minefields galore, and there's even a surprise nod to michigan Jones.

I loved this quest for all of the new details but also for its part in the assault on Stormreach storyline. they concluded our tour with a glance at the Armor Appearance Kits that will be included in Update 8. The kits will be in the DDO Store for costs ranging from 150-450 Turbine Points. they include various patterns and colors and range from the simple to the elaborate. they ought to be a welcome addition for the lots of players who've been asking for some kind of dye technique.

That was the finish of my sneak peek at Update 8 -- be sure to check out the gallery below for a better look, and thanks to the Turbine crew for your time!

Tips: the map is divided in to 4 areas
    Most Complicated Instance: Lab

When players require a challenge that requires true teamwork, the Lab is a ideal choice. Legions of monsters wander throughout its maze-like map. seven tremendous BOSSes will suddenly attack to prevent you from destroying the lab. If you and your teammates have the willpower needed to defeat them, your victory will be richly deserved, and as richly rewarded.

Tips: the map is divided in to 4 areas. Each time players defeat all the monsters in an area, a BOSS will appear to cease them. As players advance from the right area to the upper area, left area, and bottom area, the BOSSes become increasingly powerful.

Entrance: players can enter from the northeastern area of Naca Desert.

    Most Challenging Instance: Fox Ruins

Drops: level 40-50 green, yellow, and purple attribute equipment, and special guild quest items.

Entrance: players can enter from the northeastern area of Energy Field, but be careful; the way there is fraught with danger as a group of elite monsters searches for trespassers.

When players are prepared to show they can stand with the best of the best, the Fox Ruins offer a level of difficulty unmatched by other instances. The monsters there's higher in level and possess more HP. Rare, exclusive treasures are available for teams that accomplish glory there, including top equipment, trinkets, and weapons, as well as precious materials.

Tips: players must defeat all monsters and the BOSS in each area to receive a key that will enable them to enter another area.

Drops: various high-level robot parts, Level 70-80 green, yellow, and purple attribute equipment.

Keep your eyes open, or you may soon lose your way inside this instance. Each monster lurking there can be a hard challenge. If you survive, you will be hailed as a hero.

Most Confusing Instance: Virtual Training Center

Tips: the hexagonal map gives players 6 sets of monsters and BOSSes to defeat before the final BOSS will appear in the middle.

Entrance: players can enter from the southeast area of East Sea Road.

Drops: Level 20-30 green and yellow attribute equipment.

What else is the studio baking up for the crowd
    One Shots: Live to ride

Every day in the wastelands of Fallen Earth is a challenge to survive. sure, you're a clone, plus even if you get your face eaten it basically means that you'll respawn in the nearest cloning facility. However, there's something about getting taken down by a bunch of mutant chickens that look like anyone stapled rubbery mannequin hands to them. Not the kind of story you require to tell at the local bar, you know? Well, amidst those moments of challenge, there's a barren beauty to be found in the lands of the Grand Canyon, such as the beauty they see in the picture today from Muttonchops of the Plague clan. he writes in to explain the scene: "I was riding through Toro Bend back to Trumbull after getting badly pummeled by some disagreeable mutants. I couldn't help admiring the new lighting effects added to the game since the last patch, so I had to send in a pic of the dawn over the wasteland."

C is for Neutral-Aligned Cookie: DDO Update 8 preview patch notes posted

One Shots needs your images of MMOs from off the beaten path! If you find yourself wandering a landscape they don't often see here, we'd love to listen to from you.

What else is the studio baking up for the crowd? First up is a brand new four-mission adventure pack, "Siege of Stormreach," which will give mid-level players a chance to defend plus ultimately repulse an assault on the city itself. For players envious of Lord of the Rings Online's cosmetic outfit system, the upcoming armor appearance kits in DDO are sure to earn a few smiles. Like cosmetic hats, cosmetic armor will visually replace your current outfit without stripping you of the outfit's stats. This special armor can be found in chests, traded, plus bought through the DDO store.

December is right around the corner, plus with it, Dungeons plus Dragons Online's Update 8. Advance release notes are up for the Lamannia test server, plus so far it's safe to say that this patch is the tastiest one yet. Why tasty? Because Turbine is incorporating cookie jars in to the game as a way for players to store edible goodies from Festivault without clogging up their stock. Best of all? This is one treasure chest that nobody can stick his grubby fingers in but you!

The lengthy patch notes also include the addition of Rogue hirelings, class racial enhancements for Half-Elves plus the usual collection of tweaks plus fixes. Hire a Rogue at your own risk, however, as Rogues have a infamous sweet tooth. daft Rogue hirelings, cookies are for players!

It was a gesture of goodwill without much precedent
Final Fantasy XIV players get another free month of playtime

over a month ago, Square-Enix announced that players of Final Fantasy XIV would be receiving an extension to the free trial period of the game, citing that the game was not as polished as originally hoped and it was only fair not to bill for a cycle. It was a gesture of goodwill without much precedent, but most players should be pleasantly surprised that the free trial is being extended seven times again. Another 30 days of free time are being granted to all players, up to and including those who had planned to cancel their billing seven times the free period wore off.

In addition to this announcement, the November version update is being given a tentative date of November 25th, after the point when most free periods would have expired. This means that early adopters have received a grand total of 90 days of free playtime -- but any account with a character created through November 19th will receive the free trial extension as well. While the free time won't mollify ardent critics, Final Fantasy XIV's players can still enjoy the fact that they can play or not play the game for another month without worrying about subscriptions one way or the other.

Icarus publishes latest Fallen Earth State of the Game

Happily, Icarus senior game designer Marie Croall is here with a lengthy State of the Game letter that puts a quantity of our fears to rest and outlines a path forward. Though Croall doesn't directly address the recent layoffs, preferring in lieu to focus on the upcoming development schedule, it's clear that there are plenty of improvements incoming, which bodes well for Fallen Earth's fans and future.

Fallen Earth fans have had a rough couple of weeks (to say nothing of the staff at Icarus Studios). The post-apocalyptic sci-fi MMORPG was recently hit with a round of layoffs that impacted several key people and likely left subscribers wondering as to the future of everyone's favourite digital wasteland.

Croall talks about Sector 4, a level cap increase, and new gear, consumables, and recipes that will soon see the light of day. Graphical upgrades and physical combat changes are also on the way, with the latter being pushed to the check server before the finish of the month. The Fallen Earth team will even be improving high-end group content, tweaking the serendipity technique, and continuing to balance Progress Towns throughout December. finally, look for long-awaited additional character slots to be obtainable in the Fallen Earth store as early as next week.

One of the more fascinating features of the game is the guild town system
The game currently has five classes and each class has five different advancement paths for each. The five main classes are the Warrior, Rogue, Mage, and Ranger. Considering that there's five class changes per character that gives users the option to pick between 8 main classes giving people choices and variety to make a character of their liking, and players can alter to these classes at level 20.

    Character Classes

    Travel and fight anywhere

Traveling and fighting can happen anywhere on the game. you can travel and fight underwater, walk through the land normally or ride a mount, you can also fly using wings and boosters and encounter enemies there as well.

When traveling by land you can take things the long way by walking from place to place, or you get a trusty mount to help speed things along.

By fighting underwater players not only need to watch their HP bar but also their oxygen bar. Because as you are busy fighting your character is busy holding his/her breath. So keep your eyes open while finding what lurks below the calm waters.

Players can gain boosters and Wings of different varieties through purchasing and by getting them through quests. Flying is a great way to get to places you couldn't get to before, or just to make traveling a lot easier. Players get their first alter at flight early on by a search which gives them several boosters to check out. Each booster lasts around five minutes and will give you a taste of what is to come five times you get your wings.

Pets, not only an item mall thing

Guilds, get a town of your own

Pets in the game can be acquired by various ways and these pet grow to be your trusty mount to help you along. there's five ways you can get a pet in the game. One is by of work, the item mall route. Ones in the item mall are usually fully grown and will save you time on raising them. there is also the other route, getting a mount by being fortunate. often times in the game a quantity of those dangerous monsters you run in to will drop an egg. From this you can hatch the egg and raise it to be a helpful and loyal partner.

One of the more fascinating features of the game is the guild town system. Guilds can take over and possess their own town which offers them a host of options. The guildmaster can actually build new structures for the town. The town is also distributed in to five sections making it easier for the town to be managed. The first is the business section which, as you may have guessed, is where lots of the transactions will happen. The tidy thing about this is when someone buys from a guild town's npc that guild makes a profit off it. The other section is the management section where the guildmaster can manage things with the city including adding more structures. Control of these towns can be won or lost by faction wars, which means you need to work to keep that nice city you and your guild built!

leaving loads of time to get those vacation requests in early
Most of us have a primary MMO that we play, plus whether it's our only game or basically the one we spend the most time in, somewhere along the line we finish up rolling alternate characters. A few games permit you a maximum of one (EVE Online) or sometimes two characters per account or per server (Star Wars Galaxies), but most current titles give you ample character slots to fill.

The every day Grind: How many alts do you have?

The query of the day, ladies plus gents, is how many alts do you have on your main game account? For the bonus round, tell us whether you play them regularly or in the event that we basically exist to be mules for your main.

While some folks probably stick with their "mains" through thick plus narrow, I suspect I'm not the one who has run beginner content multiple times -- or paid for additional character slots -- in order to satisfy the particular brand of OCD that compels me to try every single solitary class in a given game.

With the holidays coming up, there's a plethora of things a capsuleer could ask for: that shiny new T3 ship you've been eyeballing, a pile of PLEX, or perhaps a bargain at the EVE Online store sale. But the savvy vacation shopper knows to save his money for the upcoming Fanfest that's slated to be held in 2011. With Incursion coming up, Incarna to follow, DUST 514 underway, plus World of Darkness recently announced, this year's party at the top of the world looks like it's going to be filled with all manner of chilled stuff to check out.

Make your travel designs for EVE Online's fanfest

Thanks to a little bit of net digging, it seems that IcelandAir has already released its travel packages for those looking to get the jump on the event plus book in at the lowest rates. The travel site indicates that the dates for the upcoming Fanfest are March 24-26, leaving loads of time to get those vacation requests in early. Additionally, IcelandAir lists a CCP dev-attended city tour also a party after the event that offer some idea of the festivities to come, although they're not included with the travel package itself. We've contacted CCP for additional information plus will be sure to let you know when we listen to more. For now, make sure your passports are in order plus recover from to the IcelandAir site to get your package booked!

SOE treats us to twelve new images of player vs. player superhero action
Last week they showed off a batch of PvP screens from Sony Online Entertainment's upcoming DC Universe Online MMORPG. This week, we've got more where those came from, but this time you'll only find these images here on Massively. SOE treats us to twelve new images of player vs. player superhero action, featuring everything from outlandish costumes to fireballs, ice shields, & laser beams (though, sadly, no sharks with frickin' laser beams attached to their heads as of yet). Oh, & don't forget the sizable spring-loaded boxing glove.

The every day Grind: Do you turn off XP?

Craig Morrison's latest weblog post got me to thinking about MMORPG design, progression, & the sweet nectar of the gods known as XP. When you get right down to it, XP is a sizable part of why they play these games, whether it be the elementary pleasures inherent in watching the bar move, or the fact that we're hell-bent on a specific plateau that will let us equip the one-shotting batarang of WtFpwned!!11! +1.

there's some among us that do the unthinkable, though, or would if their game of choice gave them the choice. Yes, a few hearty souls turn off XP gain. I do know, right? The horror!

What could possibly motivate such a bold & rebellious act? Is it to keep away from out-leveling a compatriot? A desire to continue questing in a very awesome section of the game world? Even the wisest cannot tell why you'd want to disable the almighty XP, so today's query is a bit simpler (but feel free to expound on it if you wish): Do you turn off your XP?
