SECRET CRAFT!
Sock monkeys: Siberia (left) and Aerobius (right) have a chat in the morning sunshineHere it is, readers! My secret craft: SOCK MONKEYS!
What, you may ask, is a sock monkey? Well, let me educate you. A sock monkey is a toy monkey that one can make using a pair of socks, stuffing, thread, needles and other decorative bits. Sock monkeys have been made since the beginning of the 20th century, and were popularised by the Red Heel Sock company (made in America), which began to enclose a sock monkey pattern with each pair of socks sold. Simply Google “sock monkey”, and you will be sure to stumble across a nifty little pattern to help you make your
own little socky friend!
A few months ago, I saw a photo of a sock monkey on a blog that I read. And ever since then, I have become enraptured, obsessed, and super-duper crafty. The first sock monkey I made (Aerobius) brought me such joy and peace that I began to make more and more and more.
Aerobius would accompany me on little trips out of the house. He would pop out of my bag to listen to my friend’s secrets (that’s why his ears are so big). He even came to a few job interviews, where I cunningly said, “If you give me a job, I will make you a sock monkey.” Last night, when I went to Geoff’s house for dinner, Geoff’s brother made Aerobius dance to heavy-metal music and drink beer.
Because Aerobius brought me so much happiness, I have begun to make sock monkeys for my friends. It’s so cool- my friends really like having a little sock friend to carry around with then on their journeys through life. I have even made mini sock monkeys for the unborn babies of my pregnant friends.
I have begun to thank God in my prayers for sock monkeys. It’s nice to be able to make a little creature that smiles at you all day long. And it’s even better to make humans smile.
Love, kisses and sock monkeys,
Carla Gypsygirlps. Lots more sock monkey adventures coming up…stay tuned!
pps. Here's a question for you. Why would a Gypsygirl spend an hour doing her hair and makeup, and then stagger around in the city in high heels, and THEN answer questions such as "How did you keep track of your sales in your last retail job?"? Why would a Gypsygirl lock herself in her house to learn the intricacies of layout design? Well, the answer is: BECAUSE SHE WANTS A JOB! I think that I have found a fairy godmother. Or, rather, a fairy jobmother...
