Scott's birthday At work, we have released our new Summer 2005 range. This range will hit the shops at around September. It's quite exciting talking about range releases and things like that. Though the company I work for makes stuff for people who are mostly over 40, so I personally don't get that excited about wearing the clothes.
Lots of stores have been ordering items for our new range, and I have been entering these orders into the computer. One day, I left work feeling quite satisfied because I had worked my way through a stack of orders about an inch high.
The next day, though, as I skipped into work with my gold ballet shoes and frilly skirt, Annie (who calls herself the "girl Friday" of the company) approached me with folders and a very sombre expression on her face. She told me very sadly that I had entered nearly all of the orders into the computer incorrectly, and that I'd have to do them all again. I, of course, felt quite flat about this, but tried to take the news professionally. That is, until I noticed everyone around me was giggling like crazy.
And then I remembered. It was April Fool's Day. But you see, I never think of April Fool's Day as April Fool's Day, because it is Scott Geersen's birthday. It's not very nice to tell your friend that they were born on April Fool's Day. So, ever since I have known Scott, which is about five years now, I have avoided playing jokes on people on April Fool's Day, out of respect to my dear friend. And I paid the price for my politeness last Friday. And now, whenever Annie sees me, she thinks that I am totally offended over the joke. Which I'm not. But everything is still quite awkward.
I will definitely remember April Fool's Day this time next year. I never realised that people who worked in offices were such jokesters. I think that being cooped up all the time under fluorescent lights makes everyone get a bit weird. |
