Questions regarding hot cross buns When I was but a poor, bohemian artist (which was almost 2 months ago, now), public holidays meant zip to me. They were just another day to work- I could either do my freelance illustration stuff, or I could work at Myer and earn a yummy $30+ per hour. But now that I am a nice corporate girl who wakes up before the sun rises (sob, sob), it is a glorious thing to have four whole weekend-days stretching out before oneself. The office has been full of merry co-workers wishing each other a happy Easter. Hurrah! And this morning, Christina (who does invoicing...I wonder what that actually is?) came into the studio I share with Hana (the fashion designer) and said, "There's hot cross buns in the kitchen from Barry." I was off my little chair and away from my computer as fast as something fast (it's late okay, my metaphors aren't that crash at the moment). And, oh joy, these hot cross buns were what my friend Niccola describes as "artisan" hot cross buns- not those Bland-O ones that you get from Coles, but delicious, aromatic, fluffy buns with lemon marmalade crosses on them. And, believe it or not, the orange peel bits ACTUALLY TASTED NICE!
So working full-time does have its benefits- holidays! I must say, though, that lately, I have been romanticising about the good ol' days of when I was a poor artist. It seemed better- I could wake up late and have a nice cup of tea, think about things, move around slowly, freely call friends, dance around and sing while I worked. That sort of thing. But the reality was that it was actually really hard. I hardly ever had any money, and I always felt kinda guilty for having a lot of free time, and then I would find myself rushed off my feet and working like crazy for several weeks in a row. I don't totally dig full-time work, but it is nice to have a routine and be able to afford nice-smelling things from The Body Shop every now and then.
I have a new favourite blog! The writer is witty, smart, and very cute...okay, so he's my boyfriend. But if you can't be biased towards your boyfriend, well, who is going to buy you Baci chocolate on Valentine's Day? Anyway, in honour of my new favourite blog (www.blurty.com/users/_geoff_), I will now tell you about my ALBUM OF LAST WEEK. Everyone is so obsessed with Album of the Week- what's wrong with last week's album, I ask you?
So anyway, the ALBUM OF LAST WEEK is "Ben Folds Five", by Ben Folds Five. It's an oldie, but a goodie. Oooh, boys singing harmonies! Boys opening their hearts about girls who go missing ("Where's Summer B.?")! Boys who are witty and make fun of boring uncles ("Uncle Walter")! "Ben Folds Five" has that glorious immaturity that was also in "Whatever and Ever Amen", which sadly disappeared as the boys got older. As you might have guessed, I used to want to marry Ben Folds. He just sounds so sensitive and funny. And, of course, he plays the piano in such a beautiful, sparkling way. It is a wonderful coincidence that my boyfriend sounds a little like Ben when he sings. So anyway, I got home last night , and what was on my bed but this week's Drum Media, courtesy of my rock star brother, Derrick! And who was on the cover? My high school sweetheart (okay, so I had no real boyfriend, big deal), BEN FOLDS!
I have no real conclusion tonight except for this one question: why do hot cross buns taste better during Easter, but then become just boring fruit buns any other time of the year? Hmmm. I must eat more of them to find out. |
