This would be a water cooler conversation if we had a water cooler at work Well, I made it through my first week of full-time work. And I am okay! Actually, I'm really happy...right now, I'm happier than I've ever been in a long time, and boy is it cool!
So, I negotiated my way around a tricky week at work...I didn't borrow anyone else's coffee cup and make them mad, I didn't jam any printers, and I got to work every day on time. God is really good. I've been having lots of fun...I spend my days designing graphics for shirts and pyjamas, doing graphic design bits and pieces, and looking at fabric samples. I'm learning heaps about the fashion side of things...for example, did you know that the width of a piece of fabric is called the "warp"? One of the highlights of the week was on Wednesday. It was a really rainy day, and because I had to catch the train and bus, I wore tights and a skirt so that my jeans didn't get all soggy. And so, okay, I was wearing a punk rocker outfit. At the end of the day, Hana (the fashion designer I work with) looked at me and said, "I love your little punk outfit, Carla." And I said, "Really?! Really?!" And she said, "Yes, I love it! You are so cute!" Conveniently, my boss Barry was also sitting there in our office. "What about you, Barry? Do you like my outfit?" I enquired. And he said that he did! So HAR HAR, it IS possible to dress like a punk AND have full-time job! I have not lost my identity as I step into the rat race! Hurrah! So I celebrated the next day by buying a pair of 10-hole WHITE Doc Marten's...they were only $30, I suppose you could guess why. But HAR HAR, that's a victory for eccentric dressers everywhere!
Oh, and my birthday was fab. It was my last day at the childcare centre, which was quite sad. The ladies threw me a lunch, and my Geoff came by to join us! I didn't want to leave, and so I stayed for ages doing the washing up. Finally, my boss came up to my and said kindly, "You really should leave now, Carla." That night, my fashion designer sister Sonya and my rock star brother Derrick and lil' ol' me headed down to the Metro to see The Donnas, a highly cool (in my opinion) American girl rock group. It was super-cool concert, and boy do those girls rock HARD! And their lyrics are so funny. At the end of one of their new songs, there's a line that goes, "It's age before beauty, and you got neither!" Definitely not something I'd ever say to anyone's face! The crowd was very different from what we expected- because it was an over-18's concert, there were no friendly and excited teenagers. Actually, a small part of the audience were maybe in their fifties and sixties. This really old guy tried to befriend my sister just before The Donnas went on, and he said that "Take It Off" was his favourite Donnas song, because it was "sexier" than the others. Then he went up to my brother in the middle of the concert, and shouted at him randomly, "DO YOU LIKE JEFF BUCKLEY?" Most outstandingly, though, was the appearance of the one and only Dr Karl from Triple J. As we were waiting for the concert to start, I looked over and saw the man otherwise know as "Australia's Favourite Nerd" heading up to the seats at the back of the Metro with his wife. He was wearing a bright red and black floral shirt. I elbowed Derrick and said, "Hey, isn't that Dr Karl?" But we also thought we'd seen our Uncle Eddy and Ashlee Simpson that night, so we weren't sure. But right at the end of the concert, Brett (the lead singer girl) grabbed the mike and said in her thick American accent, "We'd like to dedicate this song to our friend who we just met here in Australia. He's really cool- his name is Dr Karl." And then the girls played "5 O'clock In The Morning" for Dr Karl, which is a song with a wicked bass-line about partying all night and swinging from chandeliers. I had no idea that Dr Karl was so cool!
But really, what I have I been thinking about, amongst the t-shirt designs, rock chicks, auditions (hmmmm...a whole other story, I think) and long commutes to work? Let's just say that boys who leave cute Post-It notes around to let them know that they dig me and who watch "Star Wars" with me on a Saturday morning kinda mess with my head in a very pleasant way. I am totally crazy about my boyfriend right now. Geoff gave me a card for my birthday with frangipanis on the front (one of my favourite flowers!). Then the next time I saw him, he gave me this totally cool bat-wing top from Tree of Life (one of my favourite stores!) with this bright blue psychedelic pattern on it. It’s very Betty and Veronica. Can a boyfriend get any better? I am so totally blessed. God is so awesome. |
