The new and improved adventures of Carla Gypsygirl! Okay, so there's no point in beating around the bush. The past few days have featured life-changing events, and tomorrow hints at more of the same...
Here's the news: 1. I, Carla Gypsygirl, for the first time in my entire life, have a full-time job. 2. I saw my favourite band in the entire world last Friday night, and I feel like I will never be the same again. 3. I am turning 23 tomorrow, ON THE VERY SAME DAY that my boyfriend turns 20! I am no longer dating a teenager!
And, of course, the details. Come on, you know that I love to explain...
THE JOB Okay, so like, last week I'm at the supermarket staring at shampoo and wondering sadly if buying shampoo is really a necessity; and now, I have a regular income. That's right: Carla Gypsygirl is no longer a poor bohemian living a student-type life. I HAVE FULL-TIME JOB. Wow. I feel really blessed- I was only looking for a job for a week, when I scored this totally groovy gig! I was praying for ages that I'd find a job- God is so wonderful. I really believe that it is so true that God provides for us. So now, I am a graphic designer slash fashion assistant for this company that makes shirts, PJ's and skirts and stuff for department stores. I start on Monday. Everyone at my new work is really nice, and they trust me with important issues such as, "Are the stripes on this shirt too far apart?" Carla Gypsygirl's stuff is coming to a department store near YOU!
But of course, it was very sad to tell my lady co-workers at the childcare centre that I was leaving. They've been telling me, "You're so much better than this." But I said, "No, I'm not." Because I wish that I did have the patience and stamina to work full-time in childcare. It's a noble profession, and an important part of society. Today was the first day back, and the prams were bumper to bumper. There were lots of new kids there, standing around looking sad and nervous. So I went up to some of them and said, "Hi, what's your name?" And they'd mumble, because they're only 2 or 3, so their speech skills aren't that great. So I just said, "Oh, cool, I'm Carla! Hey, do you like the beach? Do you like rainbows?" And then they were my best friends! And they offered to share their lunches with me! Cool! I'm really going to miss that job.
THE BAND Oh my goodness, I SAW FRENTE AT THE ANNANDALE LAST FRIDAY NIGHT! You know, I thought that I would NEVER see them live, because they broke up ages ago. But hurrah, they have re-formed! I went with my friend Kathy, who used to work with me at Myer. Golly, that girl is fun. We were just sitting there before the gig started, and she popped up with this idea: "Let's make up stories about everyone we see!" And she was off and running: "See that guy over there? Total Frente nerd. He has personal memorabilia from every single one of their concerts in a special cupboard at home. And see that girl? Doesn't want to be here, but was told that it was the coolest gig in town. Don't look now, but that guy over there secretly works for a beer company, and is paid to stand around and tell everyone to drink VB." I could only offer lame additions like, "Yeah, and they listen to Delta Goodrem," (even though I have one of her albums) and "And he wishes he was in a new-rock band." So the whole night, I kept seeing these people that Kath had pointed out, and thinking all of those goofy things she had made up about them. Anyway, Frente were so lovely. Angie Hart's voice is still angelic and strange, and she hit all the notes perfectly in the songs that I knew from "Marvin the Album". She was very still when she sang- I thought she'd dance around heaps. Simon Austin (the guitarist and male vocalist) was funny in a way that Kath described as "geeky". But oh, I love their sweet, goofy pop. It totally hits the spot for a Spacegirl like me. I was so excited and happy. I was right at the front of the stage. It was so wonderful to see songs performed that I had danced and dreamed to for so long. I was in amongst Frente nerds, swaying and singing along, thinking that it was the happiest night of my life! And I bought a t-shirt and 2 CDs! Oooh, and Angie was wearing the coolest outfit- a long-sleeved butter yellow shirt with a separate white collar, black pin-striped shorts that were cut above her knees, black pointy shoes with a wedge heel, AND A TATTOO OF A CAT on her left calf! She said that it felt like she had stepped off the stage for 5 minutes and come back again, when really, it was 10 years! I am obsessed!
THE BIRTHDAY I am turning 23 tomorrow! And the ladies at the childcare centre are making a special lunch for me! And Geoff turns 20 ON THE SAME DAY! At times, I still think that he's kidding when he tells me that his birthday is on the same day as mine. Anyway, so some people come up to me and say, "So, you're a cradle snatcher!" because my boyfriend is like, 3 years younger. Hello, we are SO not Ashton and Demi, relax! One of my friends tried to console me by saying, "Well, guys usually die younger, so younger men are better to go for." Uh, ever heard of liking someone for their personality? Especially if they know all the names of the members of The Beatles, and understand what it's like to be an eccentric! And also, he doesn't talk about boring things like mortgages! Okay, slight tangent there...anyway, with turning 23, I've been telling people that I'm 23 for the past 6 months anyway, just to freak them out (you see, I have the fresh-faced look of a 17 year old, I am told). Oh, and of course, I'M SEEING THE DONNAS TOMORROW NIGHT! Hurrah! Life's good!
2005 has been an ace year so far- full of change and adventure- AND I'M ONLY 27 DAYS INTO IT! Hurrah! |
