"One way or another, I'm gonna getcha getcha getcha getcha!" (Blondie)
Things have been a lot quieter lately. I didn't get work at the university for this semester, so now I'm down to two jobs: the design/illustration thing and childcare. I loved working at the university, because it was becoming familiar as a workplace, and it was so great to see all of my FEVA friends and my friends who had deferred (Grace and Fi, that means YOU!). But I was also glad to let the job go...sometimes people didn't need my help, so I'd roam around the classroom looking a bit lost, and I also needed to concentrate on my freelance stuff. It's strange having less to do, though. Before I went on MYC, I was working 7 days a week, and it was crazy. Now it's really sporadic, and I feel a bit strange. I have to keep reminding myself that I was supposed to take this year off. I don't think that I know how to relax properly!

I get lonely working from home so much. I miss ordinary things like catching the bus places and seeing people at work. And hence: I find myself getting very excited about the weekend. This weekend would have been a total disaster if it wasn't for Meg, though! Last Saturday, at Ian's Amazing Barbeque, Glorya was excitedly telling me about the fancy dress party she was co-hosting with Naomi. The theme was 'Come as a Country'- a salute to the Olympic Games, I'm guessing. With this exciting new addition to the diary, I planned to turn up as an American cheerleader, complete with hand-made crepe paper pom-poms, bad purple eye-shadow and a pleated skirt. I was going to bring cookies from McDonald's, and inform everyone that America was the bestest country in the whole entire world, especially as Americans landed the first man on the moon, SO THERE. I was happily telling Meg this plan on the telephone when she said in a panicky voice, "But I thought the theme was 'Punks and Geeks'! I was going to go as a geek! You'd better check it out- I don't want to make a fool of myself!" After shooting off a text-message to Glorya, I discovered that indeed, the theme had changed! Glorya assured me that I would have looked great in my cheerleader costume, though that isn't really the point.

I went along to the party as a punk, as I have a firm belief that just because a party has a fancy dress theme, that doesn't mean that you should look bad. One should always try to look nice, if possible. Although all of the clothes I wore to the party were my regular clothes (and I still got a "best dressed" nod from Glorya, hurrah!), I realised that to be a punk is rather high-maintenance. This didn't really make sense to me, as I thought that punks spent most of their time dancing funny to music and being angry about the Queen of England and stuff like that. I did try doing punk dancing, but my friend Marinka told me that I looked "like a dinosaur". Anyway, it took me ages to do my spiky cornrowed quiffy hairstyle, and even longer to wash the blue hairspray out. All of the shampoo suds turned bright blue. Thank goodness everything did wash off, though. I was worried that I'd turn up to my friends' wedding the next day with "I AM AN ANARCHIST" and "I LOVE SID" still written in black pen on my hands. The tiles in the bathroom still have blue stains on them, though.
