"Alice in Wonderland", and other exotic surprises Well, the slowing down thing hasn't really happened yet, but I'm still working on it. I really want to change this year. That's one of the reasons why I haven't been looking for a job so far- I really need to stop being such a stress-head, and start looking after myself and the people around me! It feels so weird not to have things to do, and I'm trying to enjoy that feeling.
I went to work on Saturday, and I was so sick! Everyone was really nice to me- they kept telling me to sit down, or drink something, or go home. By the end of the day, though, I felt better, so I headed off to my friend Hannah's 21st birthday party. Hannah and I used to go to high school together. She was the year below me, and we used to meet in the quad every morning and have these enthusiastic conversations about boys and acting and things like that. Then, when I became a Christian, she became my best friend at my old church (St Dunstan's, Denistone East)- she was always there for me when I burst into tears for the strangest reasons, or to rejoice with me when I was particularly hyped about something. Anyway, the theme of her party was to come as a star. When I text-messaged her for more details, she wrote back, "I'll let you figure it out". So I decided to go as a random famous person- you know, one of those people famous for being famous. I had this black strappy dress on, and I flicked my hair out, and I wore my new sunglasses (even though it was night-time- "Of COURSE I can see you...Asher...I mean, Andrew...I think!"). I also wore these new heels that kept sinking into the grass. Anyway, once I got to the party, I decided that I was Paris Hilton's Asian sister, and I kept asking people if they wanted to have their photo taken with me! Lots of people came covered in glitter and metallic things (because they were actual cosmic stars), and this one girl came as the entire Zodiac. Hannah herself was a Hollywood starlet. Oh, I totally freaked out when her boyfriend Steve made a speech! You see, everyone keeps bugging Hannah and Steve about when they're going to get engaged, because they have this whole soul-mate vibe thing happening. Anyway, at the end of Steve's speech, he said, "I know that a lot of people have been asking me a question tonight, and I'm going to come clean. Hannah, can you come up here? Hannah and I have an announcement to make." Then I hugged my friend Kara and we started making "Ooooooooooooo..." sort of noises. I was so freaking out! Then, with his arm around Hannah, Steve said, "We both want you all to know....that there's lots of food and drink available!" And then they both cracked up! Cruel, I tell you, cruel!
The next day was the first day of when we do stocktake at work. Unfortunately, half-way through it, there was a black-out, and they had to delete everything they counted and start again. So all of the people who were doing stocktake got to have an hour off. We weren't allowed to leave the store, but we could have a coffee in the kitchen or whatever. So me and this girl called Allina went upstairs to the TV & Sound department, and sat in front of one of the huge screens and watched "My Big Fat Greek Wedding"! After that, we went downstairs to the kitchen, where people were STILL hanging around. So I started flying paper planes, which became a bit problematic, because I kept hitting people in rather unfortunate places (eg. arm, stomach, eye, their lunch).
Today was really special, because I went to see the Marian Street Theatre for Young People's production of "Alice in Wonderland"! I worked as an illustrator for the posters, flyers and programs for that particular show. I love theatre. When I was watching the show, I realised that, through God's generosity, I had fulfilled my dream...to work with the theatre somehow. The show was really magical and beautiful and energetic and funny. The set was really cool- in the centre of it was this slippery dip, which was used for a lot of different purposes. They also had this dude sitting in the back who made the music for the whole thing- he played on a keyboard and used chimes and a kazoo and cymbals and other cool things. I feel really grateful that God gives me so many great opportunities. I'm also glad that I'm so blessed to have Lucia as my friend, because she offered me the illustration job! I met the director of the show, Margie McCrae, who was really friendly and positive, as well as the writer and costume designer. I find the theatre really intoxicating and enchanting and alluring...if I'm not careful, I think that I could spend my life hanging around theatres and rehearsal rooms, just making up stories and playing and imagining things. Maybe that's a leap I need to take... |
