interviews, new outfits, and rain, rain, rain I was on the bus with my sister today (me: going to a job interview/show-and-tell; she: going to work), and we were discussing how the Sunday papers always interview these Sydney socialites about where they go to buy and do certain things. You know, like, "Where do you go to have a drink?", "Where do you buy your coffee?", "Where do you go to work out?" Sonya was saying that hers would sound kind of dumb- she shops at Macquarie Centre, and she hates having to hang out at the Greenwood when her friends go for drinks. I was saying that at least she would have something to say! My responses, I realised, were quite anti-everything. Either that, or refreshingly bohemian. You take your pick.
CARLA'S POSSIBLE INTERVIEW WITH THE "S" SECTION OF THE SUN-HERALD S: Which bars do you like going to for drinks? Carla: I don't really like going to many bars, mostly because they're too crowded, and everyone just stands around not talking. Plus I don't like going to places to be "seen". Also, my art-girl-punk-princess attire never seems to fit in.
S: Where do you get your coffee? C: Well, usually I can't afford to buy coffee, so I just drink tea at home instead.
S: Where do you work out? C: I don't like gyms, because then everyone sees you working out in daggy clothes, and that's embarrassing. Especially if you're always getting the steps wrong in aerobics. And at my local gym, apparently a lot of my high school teachers go there. I like to run around the block instead.
Hmmm. I think it would be better if "S" asked people what they valued, and what their favourite movies and smells were, and those sorts of nice things. One of the highlights of my day yesterday was sharing my umbrella with this girl I didn't know. I was walking from the train station to uni, so I could print some stuff, and the rain was just pouring down really heavily. There was this poor girl waiting to cross the road, about my age, and she was sopping wet, without an umbrella. So I walked up to her and said, "Hey, do you want to share my umbrella?" We had this really nice chat as we waited for the lights to change. She was really nice! So the moral of the story today, dear friends, is to share your umbrella with someone today, both metaphorically and literally.
Oh, and one final thought: best friends (i.e. MEG) are wonderful for telling you that you look spunky in your job interview outfit, and for noticing the new blush you're wearing, AND for noticing your new haircut. And they are especially wonderful for telling you that you did the right thing when you know you did, but you feel like you didn't! |
