Ha ha! Cold and flu tablets, sleep, a little bit of J.Lo power and a lot of prayer, and I'm better! Hurrah! I'm so glad- I really didn't want to be sick for MYC.

I've been practicing my singing a lot lately. About a month ago, I was having one of those glorious sunny Saturdays in Glebe. Sitting in a cafe with Naomi, Mel, Megsy, Gloria and Took (Petersham Evening Church Girl Power!), I was telling them my usual speel about being a rock star ("Yeah, I'm like, totally a rock star. Me and Meg are in a band, and we've written a few songs. We're, like, totally cool."). Then Naomi interrupted with a suggestion that was a little too grounded in the real world for my liking: "Why don't you sing with the band at MYC?" Oops. I had forgotten to mention, of course, that I had a limited vocal range, and that I hadn't sung in front of people since I was about six. Apart from a brief stint in a band with my pals Sam and Fiona, where we lasted for only a week and a half before breaking up.

The MYC band had our first practice on Wednesday, and I had so much fun! I hadn't left the house since Sunday because of my Flu Monster, and so I dressed up in celebratory purple tights with a swirly skirt. Ro and I rocked up to the Petersham hall to find Ben and Mark with their electric guitars, and Andrew playing songs that he'd never heard before on the piano. The musicians are really talented. Call me a rock nerd, but I always get so excited when I see anyone playing electric guitars! Ben let me have a go on his special black guitar, and I tried to play one of those songs I'd written. The boys were sweet and put the distortion pedal on for me- rock out! Unfortunately, I didn't sound that great- "I'm playing it, but why does it sound so bad?" I whined. "Are you playing chords?" Mark asked me. Singing with the band was so much fun. I'm a "helper singer", as Emily calls it- Ro is the lead singer, because only she can reach all the high notes in "Ancient of Days". Roanne and Emily noticed, though, that I don't pay any attention to timing. I just sing along at my own pace. Whenever I get excited about a particular melody, or some wonderful lyrics, I start singing louder and faster, and the whole band has to play keep up with me! "Tap your foot to the beat or something, that's what I do," said Ro. The problem is, that even when I do that, it's to my own beat and not the beat of the band. It's funny- that's pretty much how a lot of my life is. I'm always going at my own speed- faster or slower than other people, but never at the same pace. Maybe it's called Carla Time. Emily thinks that when the drummer comes to the next rehearsal, I should be okay.

We're singing this one song that's based on 1 Corinthians 13 ("Love is patient, love is kind"). I only learnt the song on Wednesday, and if we don't practice it again, then it seems as though I will be making up my own melody at MYC. We're performing it as an "item"- doesn't that sound cute and primary school? With a few of the songs, we haven't figured out how to end them. So we figured that if that happens (as well as if we forget any lyrics), we'll just punch our fists in the air and shout, "JESUS ROCKS!" That way, we'll distract and confuse our audience. Either that, or we'll strike popstar poses.

When I sing songs to God, I think of how creative and wonderful He is. The lyrics always remind me of all the wonderful things God has done for us, and who He is. Our Creator took the punishment we deserved. And I love how He is a God who judges according to righteousness and justice- not how many worldly riches we have, and that sort of thing. I love how God has created so many beautiful ways to worship Him. I mean, He could have decided that in order for us to worship Him, we could just jump up and down a lot, and that would be enough. But He created something wonderful called music, so that we could lift our voices to praise Him.

Okay, it's off to another beach house for me on Monday. I'm really looking forward to studying the Bible intensely and hanging with the FEVA crew. And you know what? This time, I am NOT going to go swimming. Spacegirl Princess Rockstar Carla, about to take off for Holiday Galaxy Adventrure 2.
