an evening's journey to outerspace Hmmm, this is unusual, writing in this journal on a Sunday! Usually I don't get around to writing about the weekend until Monday. But here I am at home today...I didn't get a shift at work. It is nice to spend the day at home and catch up on uni work, though.
Mind you, I really don't want to do uni work. I am still kind of panicking about it. I've been compiling lists of what I would rather be doing: painting my nails, going to see "How to Lose a Guy in 10 days", hanging out the front of a sunny church, going to the Glebe or Paddington or Bondi markets. But there will be a time for those things. Now is my time to work hard, and I have to accept that!
Went to work yesterday- I work in the books, stationery and cards department of Grace Bros, and so many people were running late on buying their mum a card for Mothers' Day! This huge swarm of people came in at like 4:55pm (5 minutes before we close) and were frantically trying to choose cards for their mums! I was like,"Come on guys, I want to go home! Get organised!" Mind you, if I didn't work in retail, I would have completely forgotten to buy a present at all!
Eventually I made it to Arwen't 21st birthday party that night. I also forgot during the day that I was supposed to go there, so fortunately I remembered. It was a "Sci-Fi" theme (she's way into Babylon 5, Red Dwarf, Star Trek and all that sort of stuff I don't understand), and I decided to go as an ALIEN. So after I got home from work, I put on bright purple tights, a red-and-green harlequin-type mini-skirt, a 3/4 sleeve black top and got my 6-in-1 curling tongs out and flicked the ends of my hair up. I was prancing around the house, waiting for someone to notice, but no-one even batted an eyelid. Finally, I stood in the kitchen (where Sonya, Mum and Dad were) and shouted, "I am dressed up as an ALIEN, I've been waiting for you to notice! Look at me!" Then they looked at me, and Sonya said, "I didn't even notice." I think that the thing is that I dress like that ALL THE TIME, and so no-one even noticed that I was in fancy dress! Perhaps I am not rock star or a fairy or a nerd girl at all- perhaps I am an alien! A cute one, hopefully.
It was really cool at Arwen's. We share an interesting past- we spent many hours together in year nine and ten in maths, science, english, PDH and PE classes. We didn't do work- we wrote a series in Isobel's diary called "The Adventures of Captain Iso" (Arwen's character was The Arweister and I was Captain Iso's sidekick, Ducky), drew in our school diaries and wrote funny lists (eg. in maths, we wrote alternate subject names: "Trickonometry" and "Ab-Surds"). Basically we both failed Sciece together, and it was great. I wouldn't swap those times for all the A's in high school science in the world. I was also so, so, SO chuffed to see Linda, Sami (hope I spelt it right this time) and Isobel- my three best friend from high school! Those girls are so great- I always love seeing them and catching up and talking about girly stuff. I miss them- I've been so busy and sad that I haven't had a chance to call them. I got to chat to Linda a lot, and it was so cool to hear that she is being really creative right now. She is a graphic designer as welll, and she said that my portfolio inspired her. The thing is that SHE is inspiring ME right now- I haven't really done much artwork lately, and so hearing that she was so into it and enjoying it so much made me want to start making stuff again.
Everyone seems so grown up lately- they all have real jobs, and people who I haven't really seen since I left high school ask me, "So what are you doing these days?" I never know what the date is, so how can I remember what I have been doing? How can I say something that sounds real? What I've been doing is daydreaming, writing in this webjournal, visiting places with waterfalls and rocks, reading kid's books, imagining being a rock star and trying to get by at uni. It makes me think that maybe I should get a job next year. But I really don't want to- I seriously need some time to relax. I think I'll try to do something pretty outrageous next year (like join the circus) so that I'll have a better response when people ask me what I'm doing.
It was weird- so many people interpreted the "Sci-Fi" dress theme to be "Wear lots of leather". Like, people were wearing leather jackets, leather trencoats, leather skirts and leather pants. All in black, or course. I don't understand, though- it's not like they have cows in outerspace or anything like that.
I left at a-quarter-past-eleven- how "Cosmic Girl" of me!
ps. Guess what? The comments thingy is working now! Three cheers to Scott! Please post me a comment- I'll try to write back!! |
