Miss Erma's Journal AOL CityGuide - http://www.digitalcity.com/newyork/ New York Times City Guide - http://www.nytimes.com/top/features/travel/destinations/unitedstates/newyork/newyorkcity/ CitySearch - http://newyork.citysearch.com/ Might be helpful links: http://www.newyorkcity.com/ http://www.cityguidemagazine.com/ NYC & Company - http://www.nycvisit.com http://www.newyork.com/ That reminds me, I want to get another "I <3 NY" t-shirt. Maybe I'll buy a couple if I can find cheap ones. My old one is too big on me and it's faded. To do: - Find and print a map of NYC - Make a list of places to go: museums, shops, *cafes*, restaurants I decided I won't be going to Panama City Beach for spring break again this year. Instead my sisters got vacation time off during my spring break so we're going to Baltimore for a few days. I was there once but not long enough to actually see the place so I'd love to spend more time there. I found this website as a great guide to the sights and events in Baltimore so I'm sure my sisters would love to see some of the museums and shops suggested on the website. Hopefully I'll be able to go to NYC next month also, on the Phantom of the Opera trip with SCSU. Cross your fingers that Betsy, Pam, and I can get tix! If not, plan B is the Beauty and the Beast trip they're going to be doing in April. Who knows, maybe I'll do both if I can! I'd love to! So I need to do some research and make a tentative plan on what I'd like to do & see while I'm there. The last time I went to NYC was with my sociology class in my senior year. The class was popular only because everyone knew that the teacher always brought his students on an NYC trip at the end of the year. I was in a group of about 7 or 8 or so and we basically walked all over the place. We saw the Empire State Building, saw Times Square, dropped by the Disney Store, went into some huge multi-level mall, saw the narrowest building in the city/world, walked by Macy's, and a few other things. Oh yeah and we ate in this cute little restaurant in Little Italy. Then I bought some NYC-style cheesecake before we headed back. Fun times. I wish knew where my pictures are. What I'd love to see is Chinatown, Times Square again (even though I could just catch a glance of it on TRL any day), and do some shopping. I want to take more pictures. Not just touristy pictures but pictures of NYC folk and the culture and the fashion and all that good stuff. I heart NYC. Yeah boy! I really don't know what to do with this journal. I have an account at LiveJournal and I have a blog on my website and MySpace has a blog too. So many outlets, so little for me to say! I dunno. Hi. Current music: Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out. Yeah I totally didn't update this at all in 2004. It's as if I didn't exist last year. Yea boy! Last saturday I went to a craft show held at the local technical school gym. It's been a few years since I've been to a craft show in town because the last one I went to, everything was old woman crafts. At least every table had something crocheted or knitted. Someone would be selling crocheted doll clothes, plastic canvas tissue box holders, and at least one person still making scrunchies. I was wrong. The minute I walked in, I was sorta disappointed. The first table I saw was an Avon table. Right across from it was a Pampered Chef table. These aren't crafts! Another table had these mini notebook holders that obviously looked like the woman went to A.C. Moore to pick up balsa wood holders and a sheet of flowery rub ons and rubbed on a couple flowers on the wood, stuck a mini notebook and pen in it, slapped a tag on it and put it on her table. Half the crafts people were selling were no brainers in terms of using imagination and a significant amount of planning on their part to make their stuff. The only person I saw who actually did that was my friend Maria who had her own table there! I was surprised. Well half surprised, I figured since she's an employee at a craft store that she'd get into a type of crafts sooner or later, it was bound to happen. She had her own table selling beaded jewelry. Her table was all nice and colorful and she was sitting there in the middle of making another necklace answering pesky old women's questions. I was quite proud of her. I know a lot of people, especially the gals on my links page make handbags and sell them at various craft shows across the country. The only handbags I saw were those country style padded bags only older women wear. Are you serious? Where are the old ladies? Where's the crochet and knitted items? I kinda miss them now. They've replaced them with middle-aged moms eager to make some change selling fleece blankets (that's something diffificult to make, NOT) and by becoming your local Mary Kay representative. C'mon now. I want my grandmas back. What I'm wondering is what kind of screening process, if any, was done while this show was being organized. They obviously weren't too strict on what can be included in a CRAFT show, or maybe they didn't get as many spot rentals as they expected and bent the rules. Who knows. I'm going to check out all the other craft shows in this area next year because if the others are like this, then my sister and I will set up our own craft show. For goodness sakes. We've got A.C. Moore, Joann's Fabrics, and Michael's just opened up, get your butts over there and get crafting people! Current mood: tired. Current music: The Cranberries cd the roomie is listening to. Here is a list of the projects I'm currently working on. I'll edit and re-edit this as time progresses so keep checking on this entry! 1) The Xmas cards for my friends and relatives. (I got a package of around 50 cards so I may have some leftover. If I do, I could send the rest out to anyone who gives me their address!) - I've got a red card with holiday memory paper, ribbon, and (hopefully) an origami/cutout angel to put on the front. I'll take a photo soon of what I've got done so far. Last year I made cards with a snowman made out of foam sheets and wrote personalized messages in each card. 2) A handmade mini journal called "The To Do Book" I want to make for my roommate Amy. Like me, she likes to keep a daily to-do list and I thought it'd be nice to make her a small journal for her to keep all her lists together instead of on loose sheets of scrap paper or have to have tons of sticky notes all over the place. - It'll be a pad of note paper covered in cardboard (and the cover will be decorated with nice fabric or memory paper) and binded with ribbon or in a way that the covers can be removed to refill the note pad. The idea is still in my head and still brewing but I found a great intstructions for exactly what I want here.) 3) A portfolio for my sister Joan. I found a pattern in a purse-making book at the library and it's awesome! Doesn't take much fabric to make and seems easy so I'll try and start that this weekend at least. 4) A knit scarf for myself. When I thought knitting was only a grandma thing and no matter how adventurous I got in the world of crafts, I told myself I wouldn't get into knitting. All you crafty folk are a bad influence! You're knitting cool stuff and I want to do it too. So I'm going to pick up a book on learning to knit or find a webpage, whichever I'm not lazy enough to do first, get some yarn that's coincidentally on sale this weekend, and get learnin'. Wish me luck in my first project! A scarf is simple enough, right? - I found a pattern here. Thanks ChickKnits for the free pattern! I change my mind again. I'm going to be writing in this journal about crafty things. My projects, other people's crafts, tips, and all that good stuff. Maybe I might post some entries pertaining to exercise (I used this journal to post private entries about my Pilates exercise stint over the summer.) and some other non-crafty things that might slip thru the cracks. Let me know you're reading this by posting a comment or two! :) Back to high school I go... I had a rehearsal at my old alma mater for a choral reunion concert that my choir teacher organized. It was great to see some old faces again and catch up. I hugged a lot of people which made me happy. Chris hugged me too hard and too long I think he burst my left boob. It's so funny, all my choir buddies and I are graduated but Chris is still in school. He's finally a senior! I felt old. But then again, there were ladies from the class of '72, '44, and '46 so I'm not that old. Standing on stage, walking through the hallways, and sitting in the cafeteria brought back a lot of good memories. I had a good talk with Mr. Frascarelli, he's still a good man, really glad to keep in contact with him. I missed all of them. One thing I don't miss is the immature kids in the last row who caused such a ruckus all throughout rehearsal. Man! I sure do know where to stand on the risers, right next to them. =\ Trista or Beth didn't come, I was really hoping they'd show up. I hope Trista can make it to the concert on wedesday though, I wanna see her again. All in all it was a good evening spending time with people I used to know. I got all of their phone numbers so I can call them often this summer. ha! Embroidering is fun when you've got cute pictures to sew in different colors. Today I tried to embroider letters. First I tried to embroider like those machines do of team names on baseball caps but that was a mess. I sorta figured out a style like cross-stitching and the more letters I sew the better it looked. Practice makes perfect. I'm sure I won't be offering any personalizing services anytime soon besides easy iron on lettering. I did do some doodling of pictures of objects and animals that I could embroider on some handmade bags in the future. I love my creativity! |
