The Realm Of Web-comics and Manga Web-comics are something that have become a part of my day to day life for quite awhile now. I check out quite a few of them quite often in the span of a week, almost daily actually.
Here are the following web-comics I like in no real order Penny Arcade PvP Questionable Content Entropia Crap I drew of my lunch break EarthBound (2) Sore Thumbs Erik the Juiceman Dueling Analogs Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal Megatokyo Punks and Nerds Stubble The Lounge Roomies/It's Walky/Shortpacked Loserz
Let's not forget Manga since Life Study is in Manga form Lupin III Fullmetal Alchemist FLCL Detective Conan Comic Party Read or Die Dr. Slump Dragonball [original]
It's the pure love of creation from this comics that has been something to inspire me with Life Study. I've said this often but it's still around, lack of updates are as a result of procrastination from Vanessah and me/development of the story as well that we are placing into the main story and characters in the comic. Quite often, I'm rather glad there has been a lack of updates for our development process. During this time, Vanessah and I have brainstormed on ALOT of stuff that not only was a benefit for the comic but also in my revisions of A Day At The Park, which for anyone who saw the play that reads this journal, if you liked the play, you'll enjoy the comic just as much.
There was a description on the SJTC when the show was getting ready about the characters being unusual and vibrant and quite frankly, that's what I'm aiming for the other characters in Life Study that they have their quirks like we all do but also come across as real people that you either you can relate to yourself or for someone you know.
I'm getting the itch to get back into voice acting and also sound mixing for something. I've been blessed to have done the sound design for every Second Stage production I've been in since Heaven is Boring and those productions get me wanting to do another radio play.
That's all for now, felt like writing, but not for any scripts tonight. -Ryan | | Wednesday, February 28th, 2007 | | 7:59 pm |
Back on the horse known as journal entries I've been getting some nudges from people to write in this journal again, not nudges to suggest that they found anything I wrote to be quite clever mind you but nudges none the less. I've been spending more of my writing doing brainstorming than actually writing, which I've gotten from my brainstorming for Life Study, which by the way, again, I'm sorry about the delay and lack of updates. I'll accept your foul mouth tirades about laziness like I accept foul mouth nonsense from customers about 3 dollar charges. Acknowledgement! But I should start writing again on this thing.
Since (holy shit November 06) since I wrote in this journal, I was cast in a play written by Chris Walsh and a story from Life Study called a Day At the Park were apart of an evening of original one act shows called Script Happens (check out www.saintjohntheatrecompany.com to learn more). I had a wonderful time working with the people in Talking Shop.
I have to say, I was very impressed with what I saw about the treatment for my script. The directing (Chris Walsh) and the actors really got me pumped to write more for Life Study, as for my acting in Chris' script... eh, It was ok I guess...
Work wise, is ok, although I get a bit of a foul mood during the morning shifts when I get that sudden jolt of creative inspiration to write something, whether it be a short story or a script. It creeps up at me like a ton of bricks and it makes want to write more than take calls for people to complain about 3 dollar charges.
I'm already working on a script I'm looking to submit for Theatre on the Edge. Something that takes advantage of the format of being edgy and stretches the boundaries of the theatre medium.
I'm off -Ryan | | Saturday, November 25th, 2006 | | 11:37 pm |
Boredom Geez, it has been awhile since I last wrote in this, so long ago, that I have been taken off a few links of some blogs. I'll be honest, the only reason why I don't update in awhile is a combination of things:
Work Writing Sleep Any new DVD's and DS or GBA games I get Social Events
You know, stuff like that, but I will make it my mission to start writing in this again and perhaps, even start up that "crap I wrote on my lunch break" blog I've been thinking about for months.
Last weekend, I went to see Noises off over at the Imperial. Money well spent. Up to three hours of great fun! I was laughing all the way through.
Today, we had the public readings for the scripts people sent in. Two of the three scripts I submitted were chosen to read, but we only got to read one of them, which was forum, Parkbench'97. I was very pleased that it went over as good as it did. People where laughing all the way trough, a couple even in almost tears from laughter. I really have to give kudos to the people who read the parts, they brought the characters alive! We only read around five scripts, which each of them I enjoyed quite much. The wait was well worth it for this event! | | Tuesday, October 24th, 2006 | | 7:35 pm |
Another day, another set of angry customers Punch in at 9AM, get yelled at by customers till 10:30, then break, then be yell at by customers till 1, then lunch, then get yelled at by customers till 3:45, then break, and then oddly enough get yelled at by customers till 5PM and then punch out.
But on the bright side, I was able to write a first draft for a side story for Life Study. | | Thursday, October 19th, 2006 | | 10:35 pm |
Crap I wrote on my lunch break Smeg... it's been a VERY long time since I wrote on this thing. I'm chalking this up from the work from work in providing customer for a cell phone company that the only place in the maritimes you can get it is in Halifax.
Nothing a whole lot to note since last noted in the previous entry. I'm now working day shifts which has been an adjustment since working the 5PM to 1AM shifts provided a lot of sitting down and doing nothing moments which those moments at times lasted up to and going over an hour of no calls coming in.
Comic- delays but hey, these things happen. Vanessah has been busy with school. I'm already doing some stuff for the story, padding down a chapter as well as starting work on another. Expect another MadCap strip by this weekend.
Tonight I went over to the loft after work for the View and Chew for the winging it plays. Like the first time I saw them, I was laughing my ass off from start to finish.
I've been thinking about starting up a blog called "crap I wrote on my lunch break" sort of a ohmage to the great webcomic, "crap I drew on my lunch break". Just writing down some random stuff during my lunch break [or maybe even in between calls]. I've been writing random things allready that range from one-liners, to short stories. So expect that starting up as soon as this weekend possibly. -Ryan | | Thursday, August 24th, 2006 | | 11:58 am |
The weekend known as Thursday and Friday I'm on what I'll have to consider my weekend from work. I've been looking forward to it especially since my shifts are from 5pm to 1am. I dread thinking that I would working late shifts since the interview, considering that I started on nights at my last call center job, which ended in disaster, but this job, for some reason doesn't really bother me to work nights [at least at this time].
I got a couple of scripts that I'm putting the finishing touches on that I'm going to submit to Second Stage [Parkbench'97, In Character and LOFT]
Check out Life Study to see a guest strip written by one of the supporters of Life Study, Banov.
That's it for now, now it's time to get some writing done. -Ryan | | Thursday, August 17th, 2006 | | 11:40 am |
Theatre On The Edge.. Of My Seat Last night was opening night for the one acts. I am very pleased at how Bucket went over with the crowd. I couldn't stick around to see the other two, but I'm going to defintely see them on Friday and possibly tonight as well. I saw them as well as the Dance Collective on Sunday and was quite impressed.
Tonight, night two of the one acts!
By the way, look for a new comic on Sunday. | | Monday, August 7th, 2006 | | 3:16 pm |
NB Day post It's the middle of a holiday for me so I'll take some time to write about what has been happening. Bucket- Coming along real nicely. At every one, the actors improve and are bringing alive their characters and surroundings more and more. I can't wait till the performance nights. Work- Can't really complain, honestly. I'm serious. I am digging this job very much. For the first time in over 2 years I am not dreading going to work. On Friday, my training class threw a farewell lunch for our trainer Ti-Jean who is heading back to Montreal. He was a good guy to have when it came to learning the aspects of the job. Now starting Thursday, we will be on the floor, taking calls. Life Study- I've been talking with Vanessah more often than usual. We off and on have only communicated via e-mails to each about stuff for the comic. We now have an official site for the comic. You can check it out at http://www.lifestudycomic.com you can still access the page when you type in http://lifestudy.comicgenesis.com it'll re-direct you to the new site. I've spent this long weekend, working on a new script that I'm seriously thinking of submitting to Second Stage. It's something I've been wanting to write for a couple of years now. | | Thursday, July 13th, 2006 | | 9:37 pm |
Things are looking up The first strip for Life Study is up Things are moving along with the new play Jay and I are directing called Bucket. Got our cast together and we are looking at having our first read on Monday And finally, after all these months I got a job! It's a call center gig with Atelka. I'm starting there on Monday morning.
I could write some more, but I have some articles I want to finish up. Until later -Ryan | | Wednesday, June 21st, 2006 | | 6:18 pm |
The Family Webb reunion Hellote once again for yet another journal entry!
Yesterday I went into town to have lunch with some people from the theatre company for a little get together for Greg, who is visiting from North Bay for a couple of days. It was good to see him again and to catch up. It was also the first time in quite awhile that all four members of the family webb from Our Town [myself, Greg, Lisa and Christi] were together and so we took a picture together. It certainly brought back good memories of the time in Our Town.
On Monday, I got a message from one of the administrator of the Voice Acting Alliance that I was accepted to be a staff writer for the community. For those of you who might not know about the VAA, it is an online community for aspiring voice actors to gain experience for their dreams of full time voice acting. Now, what would a staff writer do for this community? Well my main goal is to help start a trend of seeing more original work in the community happening more often. The productions on the VAA for the most part are homage/tributes to anime. Not that I don't like something like that, but I do hope to see some more original material being made. But here's a short list of the stuff I'll be doing as a Staff Writer: Writing articles on creative writing Reviewing productions [which I'll probably review original work more often than the anime tributes] Helping out with any special events and productions that come up Writing original material to use as productions [good use for my "For Your Ears Only" idea and the thought of just writing a bunch of scripts is very enticing to me]
In other news, I got a rough version of the splash page for chapter 1 of Life Study from Vanessah, basically just a version before she would ink it. I really liked it and told her to go ahead with the inking so the comic should be starting any time now. | | Tuesday, June 13th, 2006 | | 11:04 pm |
Wrasslin' at the LBR Just back from the Lord Beaver Brook Rink. Saw some Grand Prix Wrestling. Going into it, I know it wasn't going to be like the ECW pay-per-view but I would still enjoy it for what it was. There was some fine wrestling, although some howkieness in some of the gimmicks [spider man for example] and during the matches, but I let it slide because it is part of the show and people do get into it like it was old school. My only beef about the show was the lack of security, which by lack I mean none and a lot of the crowd was kids so they would be running all over the place, hanging near the ring, the entrance way, etc. oh it was just annoying with that and how the kids were acting like ECW fans and not even accomplishing that goal. I talked with one of the wrestlers after the show in fact one of the female wrestlers [Krysta] who was very nice and really enjoyed being apart of the show and being in the business and I hope to see her branch out and gets more exposure. I can see her in like WWE or TNA or even following women like Sara Stock into places like Mexico. | | Monday, June 12th, 2006 | | 12:04 pm |
The extreme weekend update Improv and wrestling, a great mix and two great shows
Friday- Mission Improv-able at Tapps that introduced the newest member of the Improv Corp, Keith Dickson. This show to me was a bit different than the one at the gothic arches a couple of months back. I actually had a lot more fun with this one from A] the peformances B]the atmosphere and C] seeing the results of the suggestions I wrote it, which went either way. Some got big laughs, others the crowd just sat there, but the troupe managed to do something with them, like they always do.
What I like about going to the improv shows is that you tell that the performers are having a lot of fun up there and that energy can get to you if you're watching it. It's that kind of energy that actually inspires me to write the improvised scripts that I'll do from time to time. I can't wait to see the next show as well as seeing Fun-zai, their TV show on well... the TV of course.
Saturday- Just relaxed, worked on a script for a side story for Life Study
Sunday- ECW ECW ECW! ECW: One Night Stand at studio 10 with Nathan and his wife, Patty. A fantastic show and I feel that it was better than last year's event. Before the show started, I won a ECW mini-brief case that had a ECW shirt, ECW disc holder which was actually a first aid kit when I opened it up and a See No Evil card to which I said to Nathan, "F***in right on! a See No Evil card! Just what I always wanted!" How I won these trinkets was for answering the question, 'Who was the youngest ECW champion?" and I just blurted out off the top of my head of, "Mikey Whipwreck" which was a complete guess. But the PPV in itself: So much fun to watch, again, like watching the improv show, you can tell the wrestlers were having more fun than you would see at like a WWE show. Hopefully the weekly ECW show on the Sci-fi network will have a Canadian outlet.
That's all for now | | Thursday, June 8th, 2006 | | 1:37 pm |
They're Hardcore! They're Hardcore! They're Hardcore! You know, looking back at past journal entries, I haven't really written a lot about wrestling. Oh sure, I'll write in something about it here and there, but I never take the time to write out my thoughts about what I see in the product these days, so starting now, I'll be writing my thoughts about shows. Will it be weekly? That's left to be seen, but I can start off things with somewhat of a bang in........
WWE VS ECW Head to Head The special that aired last night to promote the upcoming ECW pay-per-view and relaunch of the company as a brand in WWE was probably one of the better shows I've seen in WWE this year, if not the best show on TV so far this year. It's interesting that on Monday on RAW my hopes on ECW diminised with things like having Randy Orton getting a match against Kurt Angle for the PPV, Angle in itself I'm working on getting use to being in ECW, but I do believe he does fit in the company and when he was announced as a draft pick, it did give ECW some more crediblity going into the pre-work of relaunching. So, the special in itself. The matches I thought were great, well I know seeing Rob Van Dam and Mysterio would deliver anyway, but the Sabu and Cena match was surprisingly good, given that on paper it seem like a clash of styles, but they really made something work. Foley's promo was also very good. Watching it, I almost got that feeling I got from seeing his old anti-hardcore promos in ECW in 95, Foley is just that damn good on the mic and such a promo makes you want to see the PPV on Sunday. I just wish more emotional promos like that would occur with more wrestlers, at least that way, the audience can be more driven and not feel that they are watching someone reading from a script.
The Big Show turning on WWE to be in ECW was a nice swerve, although when it happened, as I was exicited that this was such a surprise, I thought, "Ok... he's in ECW, but yet he spent an entire battle royal beating up the ECW guys."
So overall, I really dug this show and it gives that feeling of, "I can't wait till this Sunday for the pay-per-view... I can't wait till the relaunch!"
In other news, Vanessah is putting on the finishing touches on the CG splash for the chapter 1 starter. If you go to her site for her other comic, EarthBound, she talks about that due to recent events in her life, she is stopping EarthBound. I say, do yourself a favor, everyone, check out the strips in EarthBound. | | Tuesday, June 6th, 2006 | | 11:17 am |
Thinking Outside The Idiot Box .... which is now what I'm calling the script formally known as Evenflow.
It's been awhile since I last wrote in this thing. My plan was for an entry after the previous one would be about the comic being up for you all to see, but alas, things are still in development. Keep in mind that this is a two person operation and Vanessah has been working getting ready for university and all that. So for any people going, "What's the hold up?" just settle down, we haven't forgotten that we are doing a web-comic. These things happen and I apologize for the delay.
So I'm aiming to go to the improv show at Tapps on Friday and this Sunday, the ECW One Night Stand pay-per-view. Looks to be an awesome weekend. | | Wednesday, May 10th, 2006 | | 2:58 pm |
I can't believe it... there's someone on one of the new shows on Showcase Television that looks exactly like me and even acts like I do whenever I become a bumbling imbecile... I'm not going to tell you which show it is, but if you look carefully, you can figure it out. I just remember watching the promos for unsaid show and thinking, "This looks interesting, sort of has that photoshop time vibe to it." I watch the opening credits, saw unsaid actor that looked like me and had this moment in the punchline of this comic http://www.punksandnerds.com/d/0077.htmlI have some ideas and even some parts of a first episode of a adventure radio play series that as of this entry I'm calling "Beyond Wonder" I'm writing the episodes like I when I wrote scripts for role playing games that I would make on programs like rpgmaker 95,2000,2003 just so if I ever feel like it afterwards, I could turn the series into a rpg . I'm also working on something called Even-flow, that I can see as either or a one act play or a short cartoon. It's not very big, it's simple setting for the most part, but it can go places in the story telling depending on the medium it's in. As for other projects like the Web-comic, yes I understand that we have an almost empty site with not a lot of content, but like it says on the site, 'we're working on it." We haven't forgotten or abandon it. Just keep your pants and or skirts on. I'm sad to say that I couldn't make it to the taping of the pilot for Funzai, a project that the Improv Corp are working on for Television. I really look forward to seeing this pilot as when I went to see Electile Dysfunction a couple of months ago, all the way through it, I constantly laughed and really enjoyed it so kudos to the guys and gals from the Improv Corp, I hope this venture works out for you and if they asked me to help out in anything, I would definitely help out in any capacity. Until next time -Ryan | | Monday, April 24th, 2006 | | 11:35 am |

5 years aka, April 20th, now it's officially five years since I started acting and I feel I've been doing a lot in those five years: 3 musicals, a couple of full lengths, a bunch of one acts, a handful of movie roles and a nice assortment of voice acting roles. I've had ups and downs in those five years, but I've met many nice people that have given me a lot of great advice, nice memories and most of all became cool friends. I want to say at this time, congratulations on two couples that are now engaged: Liz & John and Chris & Suzy. Between the last post and this one I am writing, Vanessah and I have been working on getting everything ready for Life Study, we have the site up: http://lifestudy.comicgenesis.com and a forum [which you can log onto very shortly, still need some final touches on it] Just keep checking on the site for updates. I am currently working on something I hope will be a regular thing. An audio sketch show in the style of George Meyer's Army Man Magazine http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Army_Man I have the first episode written and I have the cast together. Hopefully I'll have the first episode up in a couple of weeks. If any writers are reading this, feel free in submitting material to volkime@hotmail.com Until next time | | Wednesday, April 12th, 2006 | | 1:29 pm |
Prep work It's been a couple of days now since the end of Moonchildren and yes I'm feeling that "post-show blues" about missing being apart of it and working with everyone, especially since I've been all alone in the house during the day, looking for a job and working on some writing. But once things like the webcomic and the cartoon gets going and getting a job, the blues will slide, but apart of me will miss the show.
Life Study is looking for a premier this weekend, I would imagine. I set up an account at comic genesis on Saturday and it takes a week to get the password from the administrators. I'm starting work on writing content for the site like a FAQ, cast and story pages. One thing I want to have is not to make this webcomic a chore for new readers who discover it like a year from now in going through the archive just to catch up. But there is a thing that I noticed that webcomics I've discovered that have been around for years that if the story and art is engaging that spending a couple of hours going through it isn't so bad and Vanessah's art for this is truly amazing. I don't want to be lazy and have a cast page that says, "i'll work on this when i feel like it" that just sits there for years [cough cough Megatokyo cough], which I do love, don't get me wrong, the books are great!
Right now I have the second chapter written out that all it needs is a quick padding and I have an outline for chapter three that I'll start writing once the comic is up. I will say that the writing aspect of this comic is a lot of fun to do, while at the same time challenging, but I'm actually finding it just as fun as when I do my off the wall improvised scripts.
Vanessah and I have a blog for the comic that when a new strip is up, will talk about the strip from the perspective of writer and artist.
Today I'm going to get some lines recorded for an animated short I'm in. I'll talk more about it the next entry. | | Sunday, April 9th, 2006 | | 4:49 pm |
As the sun rises for Moonchildren Yep, the day after the final performance of Moonchildren and I all ready miss being apart of it. Anyone who does theatre always gets that "day after blues" because there comes a point when you do a show, you get to know your cast and crew pretty well. You share jokes and stories with them. For a brief period, they almost become like family. After a show, you go off and you only occasionally see them. It could be something like walking in town and running into them and saying stuff like, "Hey, how's it going?" "That's good." "Well, see you later, take care." My memories of Moonchildren are really nice memories. It was a lot of fun, I certainly have never laughed as hard before in life, both this show and working with the people involved. I laughed so much that at some point my cheeks would start hurting and my sides would ache like I got worked over by some bullies. During the course of the show, I was working like a madman on stuff like the cartoon [with talks with the animator about staging], the webcomic [writing stuff for chapters, talking with the artist/webmaster about the chapters and site] and now radio plays. Not to mention looking for a job. So some stress came upon me at times, but when I got to rehearsals, the stress would go away. I found myself every time walking out the loft after rehearsals, just beaming and feeling so much better. That's what I'll remember most about this show, just having a great time and working with great people. The show itself was something that I really found myself relating to. It's set in the mid 60's but still more relevant today than ever. These were real people in this story, not characters. That was something in the script and something Bob wanted all of us to deliver and I feel we succeed. I will say that I have seen some of the best work I have ever seen. I would rank this production as simply one of the best ever in my opinion. I am very proud to have been apart of this show. I think this was one of the first times that I was NOT nervous about performing. Waiting in the wings before my appearance each night, I was pacing back and fourth, not with trepidations but I just couldn't stand still I was so excited that I couldn't wait to go out there and work with actors I respect on the stage and off it was well. I remember first seeing the cast list and honestly my first reaction was this, "HOLY SHIT! This is a great cast! I can't wait to work with these people!" I was shaking with joy that I was in this show, getting to work with a cast of people that were both casual and new and getting to work with Bob for the first time. So, the the cast: Nathan, Keith, Suzy, Alex, Kristi, Kurt, Anthony, Lisa, Victor, Don, Jeff, Tammy, Randy and John, you all were fantastic! To Bob, Ann and Tina, you were great leaders that I learned so much from. Now to use everything I learned from this play for the next one. Take care everyone. -Ryan Current Mood: accomplishedCurrent Music: Wisdom of the World by Catherine Warwick | | Saturday, March 25th, 2006 | | 11:24 pm |
Busy busy busy, but enjoying every bit of it The title says it all. I'm busy as hell, but I'm enjoying it because it's mostly stuff I love doing: Writing, acting and producing!
Acting- Working on getting my character of Ralph down for Moonchildren. I get more comfortable with the character and the scene he's in when I'm actually working with the cast. I'll talk more about Moonchildren once the show is done when I give my reflective thoughts on the experience, but it's been a blast so far. Auditioned for some cartoons on the voice acting alliance. Interesting stuff.
Writing- Man, I'm really starting to hit a stride where I get more of the writer's high and having less occurrence of writer's block. Maybe it's all the different things I'm doing for different mediums that gets me inspired. Some of my writing partners are really terrific to work with. Each bringing something different and having their own style is fascinating. In fact right now, I am working with someone from the VAA on a project they pitched to me to be a co-developer on. It's something that at first glance I wouldn't write or come with myself, but this story idea is unique and fresh and something that even though might raise some eyebrows, I have faith in it that it'll work.
Producing- With my audio work for Heaven is Boring and now Moonchildren, I am getting back to producing audio sketches/plays. I'm going to be more focused and do one project at a time than when I tried to do like 7 at a time awhile back.
A lot of side project work, but I love it! -Ryan |
