#1108: It may be hard but trust me we can do this [07 Feb 2008|01:56pm]

First; lyrics! =D
Love Song For A Saviour )

That had most terrible punctuation, but it's okay, I don't mind editing things. It means I'm taking it in. =]

I have this terrible habit. If I don't take photos of something, and too much time passes, it won't make it here.

And so, I have failed to record my uni enrolment.

I made it into a double degree - Creative Arts/Arts. May not be the most useful thing and I know some people consider it quite disdainfully, but I don't care because it's what I want to be doing. I'm majoring in Creative Writing, and wanted to major in English Literature in Arts but don't know if I'll be able to now - it clashes with my core Creative Writing subjects, and Creative Arts being my owning faculty it comes first.

Mum is angry and won't let me withdraw but I'm planning on transferring to Japanese. I'm not going to let her stuff up my degree and not be able to graduate cause I only had 75% attendance because I never turned up to a class.

I'm going to learn Japanese.

I received a scholarship for $2162 a year, for 4 years, which is pretty cool. Have applied for EdStart, which is $500 to spend at the uni shop - they have a Neil Gaiman book that I never knew existed and haven't seen anywhere else. Will be paying $80 for VIP membership which makes absolutely everything at uni cheaper. Food, books, concerts and stuff. Everything.

My timetables problematic though. It's looking like I'm going to have to be at the train station at 7am Monday mornings (no after supper supper for me!) and if I don't get the tutorial I want for one of my classes I won't be able to make it to bible study.

I think I'm going to disregard mum's unfounded demands and transfer into Japanese.

#1109: Gravity is a hard habit to break [07 Feb 2008|02:31pm]

I heart books. Even when they seem to challenge what I believe. I can deal with it, because I know responses to their challenges.

But other people do not. One of the ideas that Pratchett plays with in this book is that gods need their believers and are nothing without them. And sadly, somebody I know seems to be coming to believe that about God. To take it perhaps a bit more seriously than Pratchett intended.

The fact is, God doesn't need us, He didn't when He created us, and He never will. His sovereignity and absoluteness is not rooted in our faith in Him, for He is absolute; and absolute is absolute no matter what the circumstances.

All of this has reminded me of a study in my teen devotional bible, by Dawson McAllister. Why, of course I'm going to copy it out =]

"God doesn't really need us, so why did he create us?"

Great question, and you're not the first to ask it. King David asked pretty much the same thing in Psalm 8:4: "What is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him?" Why did God make us? To answer that, we need to know 3 things:

First, and you mentioned this in your question, it wasn't because he needed us. Acts 17:25 says, "[God] ... is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything."

And he didn't make us because he was lonely. Long before we were here, God the Father already had "company" with his Son and the Holy Spirit, referred to in Genesis 1:26: "Let us make man in our image." All of God's needs for companionship are met within the Trinity. He also didn't make us because he needed people to tell him how great he is. God is totally secure in who he is - and he always has been.

Second, despite not needing us, God chose to create us anyway, out of his great love. Yes, God loved us before he even created us. This concept is bigger than our tiny brains, but it's true; that's what "everlasting" love means. God is love (see 1 John 4:8) and because of that love and his wonderful creativity, he made us so we can enjoy all that he is and all that he's done.

Third, God created us to fulfill his eternal plan. I could write pages and pages about this, but let me simply say that God, in his infinite wisdom, chose to make us a part of his eternal plan. What part do we play in this plan? Well, the Bible is full of instructions for how we should live our lives. But here are a few key verses to remember:

"Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength" (Deuteronomy 6:5).
"Love your neighbour as yourself" (Matthew 22:39).
"We are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do" (Ephesians 2:10).

Perhaps the most important part we play in God's eternal plan is to point people to eternal life with God - through his Son Jesus Christ.

But it's also important to note that we have a choice in all of this. We're ot God's toy soldiers. God gives us freedom of choice. Bottom line: God may not need us, but we certainly need him. I hope you've made the choice to put your trust completely in him - any play an exciting part in his loving, eternal plan.

How amazing! - that God did not create us out of neccessity, but out of love.

Darn right I'm gonna go google Dawson McAllister.
