    Burgos, Spain: A Brief History

Burgos was founded by Christian Spain in the 884 after centuries of Roman, Celtic, Moorish and Visigoth control. Since it had been an important trade center, Burgos was made the Kingdom of Castile during the 11th century. Burgos has also played a very important role in Napoleon's Peninsular Wars during the 19th century, this Spanish Civil War in 1930s and also during the Carlist Civil War during mid 19th century.

    Burgos Cathedral

The Gothic cathedral of Burgos is dedicated to Virgin Mary and is considered one of the greatest treasures of Spain. The construction of this must-see treasure began in 1221 after the demolishing of a Roman cathedral that was built on the same site. The construction of this wonder continued for more than five centuries and it reflects taste of French, Spanish and German architecture. In 1984, this cathedral was acknowledged to be a UNESCO world heritage site.

The residents of Burgos are very proud of the city being the birthplace of the famous Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar, better known as El Cid. This Spanish hero has been admired for the military leadership he had while Spanish were on war against the Moors.

    The Monastery of Royal Retreats

The monastery of Burgos was once a site that was used for Royal relaxation and later it was converted into a convent in the year 1187. Visitors can see the tombs of King Alfonso VIII and also his wife. Museo de Ricas Telas and Eleanor of Aquitaine boasts of having a splendid collection of the Royal garments used by these people.

El Camino de Santiago de Compostela is a route of an ancient Catholic pilgrimmage that runs through Burgos.

    Gastronomy of Burgos

Burgos is very best known for its morcilla, which is famous by the names 'black pudding' or ‘blood sausage.’ Morcilla is actually a mix of onion, rise and congealed pig’s blood that is spiced with red pepper and then cooked in salted water.

All these things and more make Burgos an ideal destination to spend a weekend.

Preparation Before Booking A Villa In Spain
While booking a villa in Spain you need to make sure that your choice meets all the holiday needs that you desire. It is important to get prepared before actually deciding upon the one villa that you're going to rent. This will do away with the chances of any future chaos.

    Set a budget

Villas in Spain vary in range and price from luxury to budget accommodation. Decide how much you want to spend and always remember that you'll need to spend on car hire, flights and ferry crossings etc. also. Villas are generally charged on weekly basis for the whole property and not for how many people you are in total. Think about how many bedrooms and bathrooms you would require and book of villas accordingly.

Deciding on The Location Of Villa

The rent of the villa depends a lot on the location of Villa. First of all, decide upon the town in which you want to hire a villa. Next you need to decide on the villa's distance from market and other amenities.

    Your expectations from holidays

You need to decide if you want to relax and spend time with your family or you aim at basing your cell centrally in order to minimize traveling and watch major sights. Make a list of the amenities that you would like to access and then choose your villa accordingly.

Choose the right size of villa

Make sure how much space you need and also check if any of the beds are sofa beds. It is practical that member of your group can sleep on the lounge.

    Swimming pool

A good pool can make your day and similarly a bad pool can break your holiday. Before you finally book the villa, inquire about the size of pool and also if it is heated or not. Also inquire if you'll need to pay in order to switch the heating on. If you're holidaying with children make sure the pool is not very deep and also ask if it has a shelved entrance or steps. Also inquired if you and your family can exclusively use the pool or you'll need to share it with extra properties nearby.

    Cooking

Inquire about the kind of utensils and electrical appliances are there in the kitchen. Most of the holiday villas are self catering but you may also ask the owner to provide a chef.

All this preparation will make your holiday the most memorable experience of your life.

Not just only these trains are ultra-luxurious, but these trains also provide an effective and efficient way to move around the city. Without AVE, a number of day trips from Madrid would be impossible. AVE is the quickest and the most proficient way of traveling around Spain and in a lot of cases, it is even quicker than flying. Traveling by AVE is an eco-friendly way of commuting. The only problem with AVE traveling is the fact that the service in its preparatory state and therefore it does not cover all tourist destinations.

All services of AVE currently radiate from the Spanish capital of Madrid. The service currently takes people from Madrid to various towns such as Malaga, Seville, Toledo and also near Barcelona. There are various advantages of using AVE train service over flying. You do not need to check in and check out before your departure or arrival. This way it takes least amount of time that you waste otherwise in checking in the airport. All the AVE train stations are generally in the center of city and reaching their does not take much time. AVE is also much more spacious than that of airplanes. The last-minute tickets offered by the AVE are also cheaper than flying. The journey is quite luxurious and easy.

The only disadvantage is the fact that the regular tickets of AVE are costlier than that of various airlines as most of them have some of the other special offer. You also don't get to cover the whole country in AVE.

The AVE is committed to serve people punctually. In case the AVE train gets more than five minutes late, you get your ticket price refunded immediately. Big reclining seats, music that you can hear from the free headphones, DVDs of recent movies being played makes the journey very comfortable. With an efficient train service like this, you can make the most out of Spain by going for various day trips. Unfortunately, all this is available at the prize. AVE can not really compare with the budget airlines because of the rock-bottom prices they offer but in no way it can be beaten for convenience. For traveling at short notice, this train is cheaper than that of plane. There is no doubt that, these trains save a lot of time.

Gerona’s township is divided into two viz., Old town and New town located to the left and right of river Onyar respectively. Old town has some of the historical churches and rows of shops, etc. New town has some of the modern buildings and other utilities.

    Museo de Historia:

This is one of the interesting museums which depict the history of Gerona in a very lucid manner. There are many pictures which put across the process of development of the city and the influence of various civilizations which lived here. Adjacent to the museum is the Jewish quarter which is believed to have existed till 15th Century.

    Portal de subreportes:

This is actually the gate or entry to the town. This gate has two towers. Near the gate a church has been built in neo classical style. It welcomes the tourists to this great town.

    Walking:

Perhaps it is apt to call this a tour by walk. This is because most of the tourist places in Gerona are within walking distance. The local tourist guide will assist you in the walking itinerary. It is said that as many as 8 to 9 places can be covered in this ‘tour by walking’ program.

    Suggested itinerary for touring Spain
There are so many places to see in Spain that it is certainly difficult for a tourist to plan his itinerary properly. Some of the places which you should not miss in your tour of Spain are mentioned here.

    Merida:

Just very near to Madrid, it is easily accessible by bus and train. Needless to say, it is beautifully connected by roads too. Merida is one of the most important historic places. Perhaps it is one of the few places where the historic buildings of the former Roman Empire are still preserved. The famous amphitheatre believed to have been built by the Romans is still preserved. It is not just one or two; there are many constructions like the Roman Bridge which belonged to the Roman period. Certainly the tourist will be left speechless with these imposing sights. Tourists, please be prepared to spare at least two days for a tour of Merida because that gives you time to go through all the places of importance in Merida. If you are planning the visit in July or August then please make it for three days, because during these two months you can watch the Greek dances and dramas that will be performed in the amphitheatre. Of course you don’t have to worry about stay and food; there are enough luxurious hotels and res
taurants which will suit the budget of every tourist. The restaurants serve the local specialties.

    Ronda:

This place is just about three hours’ journey from Seville. There are good roads and this place is not connected by train. Ronda is close to the town of Andalusia. When in Ronda do not forget to visit Pueblo Blanco, a bridge across a very deep ravine. This place is believed to be where the sport of bullfighting started. This is believed to have been started by the third generation of the Romero family. This family conducts bull fighting during the month of September. There are three great bridges worthy to be seen. These bridges are believed to have been rebuilt centuries ago. Half an hour away from Ronda, you will be amazed by the cave called Cueva de Pileta which is believed to be about 25000 years old. The cave has many beautiful paintings on its walls. Normally, this is treated as a one-day trip. But the fact is that most of the tourists stay for one more day because the place is so beautiful. Here also there are many villas and restaurants to make the visitor feel at home.

Places of interest for tourists in Spain – Formentera
Just hire a boat or take the public ferry service and in about one hour south from Ibiza, you will reach a small island called Formentera. Actually this is an archipelago and Formentera is a part of the Balearic Islands. This is located at the remote corner and the ferry is the only means of travel available. This is one of the unspoiled islands of Spain. This is considered one of the precious jewels of Mediterranean Sea. The entire island of Formentera covers an area of about 85 sq. kms. The island has maintained its natural beauty; the government has not allowed any industry in this island, except for salt mining.

    Brief history:

It has a history of about 4000 years starting with the Greeks to the Romans and finally the Moors. The king of Aragon, Jaime I, took control of the island in 1235. Unfortunately the island was frequently attacked by pirates. However, this menace was completely eradicated by the stern action of the Government of Spain. Presently, the island has a population of about 7,500 inhabitants based on the 2002 census.

    Places of visit:

Interestingly this remote island also has many places to visit. The fortified church is one of the most interesting places on the island. This church is believed to have been built in 1729. The place where the church is located is now called the Plaza Principal or Principal Square. This most imposing church with sea around and vast beach is certainly a pleasure to look at.

The Ethnological Museum is another place to visit which no visitor should miss. This is one of the oldest museums in Spain. The uniqueness of this museum is that it takes us several centuries back. Antique household utensils, machines used in the making of wine, musical instruments, and many works of art are all on display in this museum. This museum attracts large numbers of visitors every day. Except on Sunday, the museum is kept open 10 to 14 hours.

Sant Francesc Xavier is another building worth visiting. Actually this building houses the island’s government offices. The uniqueness of this building is its strategic location; it is sea all round and the building is surrounded by two lakes.

Cap de Barbaria light house is just 7 kilometers away. There is another lighthouse called Es Far de Sa Mola. The Ca Na Costa tomb belonging to the megalithic period (1800 to 1600 BC) is also located here. This is the ideal place to buy jewelry, ceramics, artworks, clothes, etc.

Galicia is famous for being one of the first kingdoms established in Europe. It is a popular place among the tourists. Its beach is known for many inlets similar to the fjords of Norway. With its mild temperature, the town attracts many tourists during summer.

Beach: The unblemished coastline extends over 200 kilometers not at all overcrowded, with fjords which are covered and which provide for safe bathing. The entire coastline has many fishing villages. Along the coast are the restaurants which prepare mouth-watering seafood delicacies. One of the most popular dishes is the Goose Barnacle. It is said that the famous Hollywood actor cum director Woody Allen once remarked ‘How can this be so delicious?’

Santiago de Compostela: History of this city dates back to the 9th Century. The city shot to fame after the discovery of the tomb of the Apostle Saint James. It is now a pilgrimage center too.
