You Are Chicken Noodle Soup

You are a traditional and conservative person. You value the past, and change frightens you.

It began raining at my worksite around 20 past 6 this morning. The "weather people" are saying there's a chance of thunderstorms tomorrow. Well, that's one thing i'd be thankful for!! It has not rained in Phoenix over Thanksgiving in over 20 years. Following the Summer "monsoons" (or "haboobs", if you'd prefer), we don't usually have any rain until late January or so.

Either way, I ain't complainin'!!

It was on this day in 1942 that the film Casablanca had its first showing. The event took place at the Hollywood Theater in New York City. It starred Ingrid Bergman and Humphrey Bogart. Casablanca is the story of a cynical freedom fighter-turned-nightclub owner, Rick Blaine, an American expatriate living in Casablanca and staying out of politics, staying on the good side of the local police chief. Then Victor Laszlo, a leader of the European resistance movement, turns up in town and needs Rick's help. He brings his wife, Ilsa, who turns out to be Rick's former lover, a woman who ran away from Rick and broke his heart. Rick has two visas to get out of occupied Casablanca, and he considers escaping with Ilsa, but gives his visas to Victor and Ilsa.

The film did pretty well and got decent reviews. The New Yorker magazine called it "pretty tolerable." But it won the Academy Award for Best Picture, and now it's one of the best-loved films of all time, and one of the most quoted.

Some of the famous lines in Casablanca include, "Here's looking at you, kid."

And, "Of all the gin joints, in all the towns, in all the world, she walks into mine."

And, "We'll always have Paris."

And, "Round up the usual suspects."

And, "I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship."

It's the birthday of the cartoonist Charles Schulz, born on this day in St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1922. On October 2, 1950, "Peanuts" made its national debut.

==================================================

It was on this day in 1942 that President Roosevelt announced that the United States would begin a national gas rationing campaign on December 1st. All Americans had to display a sticker in their car window saying what category of gas ration they had. Everyone started out at "A," which got people about four gallons a week. Local rationing boards were set up to assign a "B" or "C" ration to people who needed more gas if they could prove it was necessary for their work.

The campaign made propaganda posters that asked, "Is This Trip Necessary?" or said, "When you ride ALONE you ride with Hitler! Join a Car-Sharing Club TODAY!" Along with the gas rations, the national speed limit was set at 35 mph.

The gas rationing wasn't a result of a gas shortage. The United States was self-sufficient in oil and was actually a major exporter of petroleum. But the Japanese had taken over the rubber plantations in the Dutch East Indies that produced 90 percent of America's raw rubber, and there was no synthetic rubber. The government was afraid that if everyone kept driving, they would wear out tires that couldn't be replaced. The factories and the entire war effort would come to a halt. So the United States' first national gas rationing campaign was a roundabout way to conserve rubber.

The gas ration continued until August of 1945.

Subject:Talkin' Turkey
Security:Public

The American Poultry Association recognizes eight types of turkeys. They are the bronze, Narragansett, bourbon red, black, slate, royal palm, Beltsville small white, and white Holland. The most commonly raised turkey is the white Holland.

The average person in the United States will eat 15 pounds of turkey this year.

The wild turkey is one of the more difficult birds to hunt. It won't be flushed out of the brush with a dog. Instead, hunters must try to attract it with different calls. Even with two seasons a year, only one in six hunters will get a wild turkey.

A male turkey is called a tom, a female is a hen, and a youngster is a poult.

The domestic tom can weigh up to 50 pounds, the domestic hen up to 16 pounds. The wild tom can weigh up to 20 pounds, the wild hen up to 12 pounds.

Because the wild turkey is quick to defend itself and fight against all predators, Ben Franklin wanted it, rather than the bald eagle, to be the symbol of the United States.

The domestic turkey can't fly. The wild turkey can, for short distances, but it prefers to walk or run.

The average life span of a domestic turkey, from birth to freezer, is 26 weeks. During this period of time, it will eat about 75 pounds of turkey feed. The average life span of a wild turkey is three or four years. It generally feeds on seeds, nuts, insects, and berries.

The wobbly little thing on the turkey’s chin is the turkey's beard and is made up of keratin bristles. Keratin is the same substance that forms hair and horns on other animals.

It was on this day in 1889 that the Jukebox made its debut at the Palais Royale Saloon in San Francisco. It was called a "nickel-in-the-slot player" and was built by the Pacific Phonograph Co. Later that year, jukeboxes were installed in other places around the city and on ferries that traveled back and forth across the bay between San Francisco and Oakland.

The jukebox consisted of an electric phonograph inside a free-standing oak cabinet. The technology for amplifiers hadn't been perfected yet, so there were headphones, which looked like stethoscopes. Up to four people could listen to a song at any given time. In 1927, the Automatic Musical Instruments Company introduced the first jukebox with amplifiers.

Jukeboxes changed the music business. Many early radio programs refused to play country, blues, or jazz, but jukeboxes made that music available in taverns, restaurants, and diners, and on Army bases. Eventually, country, blues, and jazz joined the music of Tin Pan Alley as pop music.

The Castle Personality Test

You are scared of new experiences. It's hard for you to break outside of your comfort zone.

You like to think that people are impressed by you. You know that you have a lot to offer.

You are a very romantic person. You can't help but see the world as it should be.

Right now, stress occasionally makes you feel trapped in your life. You usually have a clear perspective on things though!

Overall, your life is very peaceful - if not a little solitary. Much of what goes on goes on in your head.

You feel like the fate of the future partially rests in your hands. You believe you need to help make the world a better place.

The Mayflower Compact was signed by the Pilgrims today in 1620, or so I have been told. I wouldn't think that arriving in this country at this time of year would be that good of an idea, but it seemed to work out for the most part.

Tonight I am making my first entry from my new computer. I bought a HP laptop, and tonight my nephew was kind enough to help me get it hooked up to the router so I am wireless. :)

It seems like there should be a lot more to say than that, but.....

I have been off work sick for the last three nights. I think I have some kind of stomach virus or something.
It's nice to be able to stay caught up with my journals and emails when I am not at work.

Well, that seems kind of anti climatic. :p

You Are Somewhat Approachable

You are a fairly friendly person, and you're definitely not scaring people away.

You do tend to have your guard up with strangers, and rightfully so.

How approachable you are depends on who is trying to approach you.

You're friendly to people who seem harmless and nice. But you also know how to give creepy people the cold shoulder!
