I can't stand Tolkien (yeah, stone me to death why don't you) but even I have to admit Return of the King was awesome.
Mark thinks I'm just being a wet blanket. But no, I don't dislike Tolkien simply because everyone else adores him. I dislike him because he bores me. Not only is he a master of generic imagery, he belabors the details. Like, I got the point eight paragraphs ago. And he has no sense of humor. At all. And those songs! Those god-awful songs! (I have to hand it to Peter Jackson though. The songs he included in the film really worked.) I'm in awe of the scope and magnitude of Tolkien's story telling - the worlds, the characters, their histories and languages etc. But for some reason I find the story itself less than compelling.
I feel really bad about being makulit in the movie theater. (Hee. Sorry Mark.) I didn't even realize I was making all these snide comments every time Frodo was on the screen. But he really annoys me to death. I can't stand the way he's always so wide-eyed and so goddamn earnest. I was really hoping he was going to fall into that pit of lava and die.
