-Good vs. Evil-

“Seek good and not evil, that you may live; So the Lord of God of hosts will be with you, As you have spoken, Hate evil, love good...”
- Amos 5:14-15b

“Seek good and not evil.” When I read this, I thought of doing the right things, not cussing, not acting up, not having an attitude, and things like that; so really being right and good in the eyes of man. I do think God means that in some sense, but He spoke to me tonight about going deeper.
Seeking and lookin’ for good doesn’t just mean the list above, but (to me), living how God wants me to in my life. Here lately I have been slowly pushing my Bible/quiet time out the way for worldly stuff. I would listen to music, get on the internet, watch television, and play video games until I got tired.
Then when I quit that, I would say, “God, I’m too tired to pray tonight” or “I can’t read your Word tonight, I’m too sleepy”. I would make excuses to live for Him. I was seeking after worldly possessions and putting them in front of God, in conclusion – making me sin. And sin is evil. So I was seeking sin, rather than good.
It says in these verses to hate evil. Everything that is evil in this world, we’re suppose to not seek after. I had been seeking after sin, by substituting God for the world. God has convicted me about my problem and He’s got my life focused back to the cross. Okay, let me ask you this: What evil have you been slowly letting into your life?
Sometimes it’s hard to resist temptations, bad thoughts, bad actions, and sin (evil). But just remember, God is right there with you and He always makes a way out of every problem. (1 Corinthians 10:13) He loves us and wants us to stay away from evil. He knows best, even though sometimes we think we know better.
He wants us to seek good, because God is good. God made us in the image of Himself (Genesis 1:27), so we should seek after the things that are of him. We should have that desire to be more like Him every day of our lives. If you don’t have that passion, I ask you to examine yourself. Look at your life, and ask yourself, “Am I living my life in a way that’s pleasing to God?” Then pray about it. We are all here on earth for a purpose: to serve God. If you truly believe that, then LIVE IT!!! :)
