-Don’t You Love The Beat-
“Stay away from what is evil. Cling to what is good.” - Romans 12:9b
“It’s okay for Christians to listen to secular music.” “Christians should not listen to any music unless it is Christian music.” There are a lot of opinions like these two about secular music and Christian music. God spoke to me about this a while back, but I just want to share with everyone my “opinion”. God spoke this to me, my heart, and my life.
All the music I listened to was worldly music. If it wasn’t on MTV, then I wouldn’t have the CD. If they weren’t popular, then I wouldn’t support them. I listened to my secular music every day. I spend a lot of my time listening to music, but God showed me that I shouldn’t be listening to that music.
When I listened to worldly music, all it would do was drag me down. The devil tries to attack us Christians anyway that he can, whether it be through deaths, situations, emotions, family, friends, and yes, even music. He lured me into secular music by their catchy tunes and non-spiritual lyrics.
I caught myself following what the lyrics say in the songs and me thinking like the singers did. I would have bad thoughts, bad actions, bad attitude, etc. Also, sin is evil. It says in Romans to “stay away from evil” and get with what is good. If secular music is getting in front of God, then it’s evil. If secular music is getting you to sin in your daily walk, then it is evil.
Sin doesn’t have to mean cussing, stealing, cheating on your spouse, or drinking, but if the music is also causing you to lust after another, changing your attitude, making you mad or upset all the time à Then get rid of it. I would also like to say that if your parents doesn’t approve of the music, then it’s also a sin (Ephesians 6:1-2).
We have to be cautious with our motivations and actions. Even the best of things in life can make us fall into sin. It says in Romans 14:15, that we must act in love. So, don't just go around making weaker Christians listen to your secular music simply because you think it's okay and that it is not going to hurt anything - because it is now you who is sinning by not acting in love like the Bible teaches. Make sure that God would approve of your music, not the world because sometimes we start getting what is called a “sacred conscience”. We start adapting to the world and what’s in it and we get carried away with ourselves. We end up sinning and give in.
God changed my life when He spoke to me about my problem. Just remember though, that God speaks to one man about one thing and may speak to another man about something else. Pray over this subject and I ask you to not listen to my words, but to open your hearts to the Holy Spirit’s calling. I’m not perfect. I can let you down and make you stray, but you cannot go wrong with God. Only God knows the answers to ALL of life’s questions. J
Questions:
<1> Does the music you listen to glorify God?
<2> Read Ephesians 5:1. If we are to be like God, should we listen to music that
he wouldn’t listen to?
<3> Are you hurting others by listening to/singing to the music that you do
listen to?
<4> Read Luke 16:13. What do you think about this verse and how it applies to
the devotion above?
<5> The final question to meditate on is in the book of Galatians. Paul writes in the 1st chapter and in the 10th verse: “For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men?...”
