OK, I thought I should still maintain a non-medical PDA blog and I will now migrate to Livejournal as I find it is faster than Blurty and posting from Hblogger (a PalmOS blogger tool) works on Livejournal and not Blurty for some strange reason.
This Journal has officially been moved to Palmdoc Live
I think it is time to retire the Palmdoc Journal on Blurty. It has been fun but I really don't have the time to maintain so many Blogs.
I'll be concentrating on these:
The Malaysian Medical Resources
The Palmdoc Chronicles
LousyDrivers
Malaysian Society of Haematology
I like to use a browser to update blogs and Blurty's after all this while still isn't HTML friendly - have to manually add in the Hyperlink and IMG tags for instance. It's much slower complared to Blogger so I'm afraid I'll have to say Adios to Blurty!
Palmdoc, over and out.......

The New Dictionary
The Washington Post's Style Invitational once again asked readers to take any word from the dictionary, alter it by adding, subtracting,or changing one letter, and supply a new definition. Here are this year's winners:
Bozone (n.): The substance surrounding stupid people that stops bright ideas from penetrating. The bozone layer, unfortunately, shows little sign of breaking down in the near future.
Foreploy (n): Any misrepresentation about yourself for the purpose of getting laid.
Cashtration (n.): The act of buying a house, which renders the subject financially impotent for an indefinite period.
Sarchasm (n): The gulf between the author of sarcastic wit and the person who doesn't get it.
Inoculatte (v): To take coffee intravenously when you are running late.
Hipatitis (n): Terminal coolness.
Osteopornosis (n): A degenerate disease. (This one got extra credit.)
Karmageddon (n): It's like, when everybody is sending off all these really bad vibes, right? And then, like, the Earth explodes and it's like, a serious bummer.
Decafalon (n.): The grueling event of getting through the day consuming only things that are good for you.
Glibido (v): All talk and no action.
Dopeler effect (n): The tendency of stupid ideas to seem smarter when they come very quickly.
Arachnoleptic fit (n. phrase): The frantic dance performed just after you've accidentally walked through a spider web.
Beelzebug (n.): Satan in the form of a mosquito that gets into your bedroom at three in the morning and cannot be cast out.
Caterpallor (n.): The color you turn after finding half a grub in the fruit you're eating.
And the pick of the literature:
Ignoranus (n): A person who's both stupid and an a**hole.
There is Fried Chillies which is pretty neat. But I stumbled on a new one recently:
DineMalaysia.com
Again like FriedChillies is it is nicely designed, colorful and full of information. For PDA users, it would be a nightmare to surf such websites so I took a hard look at the page source and found this nice PDA friendly link which mobile users could use to search for Cuisine and Restaurants at the location of their choice. The database isn't very comprehensive yet but not a bad start for a new site
http://dinemalaysia.com/search_rest.php
Here's a screenshot from my T5 using the above link and searching for Japanese Restaurants in PJ> I am sure there are many more than 8!
After more than a week with my new PDA, I think I have got a more or less stable configuration but without any "hacks" like Findhack, Screenshot, McPhling or Qlaunch running. Hotsyncing is fine - even better than my old T3 which had occasiona Saved PRefs DB errors.
Had a minor glitch with duplicate entries in SplashID but that was because I am syncing with 2 PCs and I forgot to update the SplashID on one of them.
A backup to SD utility is sorely needed and BackupbuddyVFS from Bluenomad is the first to claim support for the T5 but I find it quite buggy and crashes my T5 though I had a couple of successes running a full backup. Lets hope a bug free version comes up soon.
I got my first accessory - a cheap RM20 sync/charge cable for work. Saves me the trouble of having to cart the cable to and fro. Next item will be the palmOne Universal Wireless Keyboard as soon as Cheng Ho can locate one for me - currently in short supply.
Do I miss the voice recorder? No. Do I miss vibrating alarms? No.
I do miss the speedier G2 in the T3 - it is a little more sluggish in the T5 but I can live with it.
Overall I am quite pleased with the T5 and hope and pray there will be no digitiser drift ever again - or is this wishful thinking?
I love the new Launcher!
Well I decided to go for it rather than put up with my T3's annoying digitizer problem and get a T5. Despite the initial bashing I actually find it quite a nice PDA. Instalation of the new Palm Desktop was a breeze. I did not use the same Hotsync ID though and decided to create a new one. This would give me more time to slowly install my critical work applications while still using my T3.
So far I have found that Lexidrugs works but the data files should be stored in the Applications folder of the internal memory. Skyscape seems to work well. iSilo and Repligo work too.
Avantgo works fine.
The new Wifi drivers for the T5 work fine too.
I had issues with DocsToGo as it affected my T3 but customer support responded with a solution.
So far so good.....
Seasons greetings and a blessed Christmas!
On the trip up to Alor Setar where I am now, on slow slow dial-up mind you, I had the opportunity to test out my map of Peninsular Malaysia callibrated for Pathaway
Screenshot:
I found that the callibration was pretty good and the track matched most of the highway except for a stretch in Northern Perak (perhaps the highway moved? haha)
Anyway the great thing is one can easily add point locations to the map and route by pressing on the Address button. I managed to capture the locations of all the PLUS rest-stops from KL-AS. You can view your tracks like the screenshot above and replay the trip too.
Well is it really useful if you already know the way? Well I think so. You can see various displays like the Route display which tells you the distance to the next point in your route, the estimated time to arrival of your destination and the distance to your destination.
Still waiting for doc_tamil's Mapopolis map of Peninsular Malaysia but until that comes to fruition, I think Pathaway is pretty neat! You can use practically any map you download or scan on your own. Downside is the maps are large - a couple of MB or so but thankfully you can store it on SD. And with a 1GB SD card that's no problem nowadays! :)
For the first time in my life, I was stuck in a lift. The hospital lift going down to the basment in the OPC to be precise.
It was late in the evening (nearing 7pm) and I was stuck for almost an hour before the hospital staff could contact the lift service personnel to come to the rescue.
Thank God for several things:
1) The Maxis signal weak as it was, was just enough for me to place a call to the hospital operator. The buzzer in the lift worked but no one answered!
2) I am not claustrophobic
3) There was no SYT with me BUT I had my trusty T3 and enough juice to play Bejewelled 2 while waiting :)
I recall reading in the papers yesterday of some people lost in a cold mountain area were rescued after one of them managed to SMS a friend.
Now what an idea for a "reality ad" - if I were a mobile phone company exc I would be most interested to interview the rescued, and get him to be a "spokesperson" for the mobile phone company.
Its amazing that he managed to get a signal in the mountains. Perhaps the ad could feature his colleagues with rival services - and "no service" displays on their phones. And our hero goes dit-dit-dit-dit and saves the day....
SMS with (insert Mobilephone Co here) - it could save a life or two.
And I will see my dream come to life at last
I will touch the sky
And they're not going to hold me down no more
No they're not going to change my mind
Cause I've got faith of the heart
I'm going where my heart will take me
I've got faith to believe
That I can do anything

It's been a long road
Getting from there to here
It's been a long time
But my time is finally near.
Well, with the help of Dobbs the English-Malay Kdic dicitonary project is moving along to the last stages. Letter S completed now!
See my previous post on the Kdic English-Malay Dicitonary project
Unbelievable but true. Spotted in Gizmodo - an unusual cellphone addon.
VibraExciter
I wonder if anyone will actually use it? Just a novelty gift perhaps...... ;)
At last the new Avantgo 5.7 (still in beta) supports 320x480 resolution and you can view so much more on your Palm!

Well, I'm glad the KVPUG Yahoo Group is taking off nicely. There are now 120 people registered with the site. I think it complements the KVPUG website nicely since we now have a place to put our files, data and what-not.
Wjat's more important, I see that people are contributing (finally!) rather than leeching stuff. I am amused that Noah's "Toilets in Shopping Centre" database is being taken seriously :) I think it is a brilliant stroke that Yahoo has made the database facility available for sharing information and building up useful databases. Speaking of databases, my next contribution will be a database of all the KLSE counters and the stock codes. Useful for looking up financial info online. At the moment, the Digi Stockwatch works great for me. Wonderful thing is even when I am not on GPRS and when I am on Wifi, it works too ;)
Essential electronic tools for the road warrior ;)
Top: Ambicom Bluetooth GPS
Bottom Left: SE t610 cellphone with speakerphone adaptor clipped on
Bottom Right: Tungsten T3 running Cetus GPS application.
It was a sad day when Bursa Malaysia decided to squeeze every sen from investors by charging for online stock quotes. This resulted in Yahoo finance no longer listing the delayed KLSE share prices. This in turn meant that Stock Manager no longer works for the Malaysian bourse. This really p*sses me off. I mean how cheap can you get?
Anyway I was scouring around for another way to get share prices online (via GPRS usually when I am mobile) on my Tungsten T3. Well, fortunately Digi has a Java applet called Stock Watch. This was designed for Java capable phones. I use an SE t610 and I don't know if it can load the applet (the phone is not on the list of supported models in the Digi website) but I do have IBM Java installed on my T3 so I decided to give it a shot.
I am pleased to say that the Stockwatch applet ( located at h**p://202.187.241.248/stockwatch.jad ) loads fine on my T3. You run the MIDlet HQ app , hit Install then enter the URL to the .jad file - that's it!
At the moment I have two applets installed:
The splashscreen:
The main menu:
Stock summary
Favorites page (just examples here):
Stock details
Well I'll miss the ability of Stock Maanager to export to CSV and using Excel macros, easy import into Quicken. But at least there is an easy way to view your portfolio online now with your PDA.
You could spend US$30 and get a commercial Car PDA mount like the Arkon or else do it for much less yourself.
Here are two options:
1) Use a phone "telescoping" holder and bracket with suction attachment to your windshield. I then use a PDA case to attach to the bracket. Previously for my m515 I had a Krusel case with belt-clip and I just clipped the case one like so:
but now I don't have one for the T3 but I have an old PDAir case (no belt clip) with loose side plastic grips. So I modified it by sticking the plastic top of some old diskette container to use as the bottom for the PDA to sit on. The case is stuck to the bracket using double sided tape and further secured by taping the strap to the arm of the bracket.

2) A cheaper option is to use some stiff wires and a cardboard backing. In this case I used the credit card holder from the old PDAir case. I got dobbs to help me put this together and stitch the wires to the case.
The end product is a case which you can hang on the aircon vents of your car:
Here are pics of the case it self:

Slowly getting the hang of using the Ambicom GPS and the software on the T3.
I rely quite often on Mapopolis and the map of the Klang Valley. Quite often when I try to figure out alternative routes, the first thing that I have problem with is the simple "where am I on the map?"
Now with a GPS you are centred at the correct spot on Mapopolis and you can straight away see where you are. Neat!
Here are some screenshots:

What else is there to do with a GPS? Well, for Dee See who asks "What's the point?" here are 16,000 things to do with a GPS
:P :P :P :P :P
Well I got myself an Ambicom Bluetooth GPS unit and having fun playing around with it. It works well as a Navigation device with my T3 mounted running Mapopolis and the map of the Klang Valley.
I have also tried Cetus GPS and here is my first Tracking picture (driving from work to home):
