: There is a 98.3% chance I will buy this on DVD when it comes out
It may be late, but I sit here awkwardly in my computer chair for the sake of blogging this epic night of cosplay revelry. Tonight, in select cities across the nation, was the final showing of Death Note: the Movie (with a special featurette showing the Making of the Movie!) And it was absolutely fantastic!!!
Granted, it was a little campy. Anything involving English dub over Japanese live action is going to be. But once the story gets going, you forget you're watching CG shinigami and you just start having fun. That is, until the very end, at which point it just stops... - When is the next one coming out?! I must see it! I must see it as soon as possible! I can't wait!!!
And all of the cosplayers!! Can't forget all of the cosplayers! Oh wait, where'd they go?
Yes, my roommate and I were the only cosplayers in the entire theater. (and the entire mall!!) And this surprised us. But we were instantly recognized by other geeks - she as Mello and me as L. And we ran into other fangirls, one of which had fanart to show us of L. And another who assured us there were cosplayers... in College Station.
This had roughly the same effect as assuring me that the printer at work was old, and that the little piece holding the cartridge in could have snapped when anybody removed it. Long story short, I might as well be the Kira of printers... And my supervisor couldn't figure out how I managed to actually break it. When he tried to take apart the other cartridge unit for spare parts, it took all of his manpower to even dislodge it.
But that's another story, and one that doesn't involve L... so it's being ignored in favor of the candy in my purse.
Hey, now... You don't expect someone to cosplay as L and not stop by a sweet shop! In the movie, I don't think there was a single scene where he wasn't eating something sweet. And I don't think there was a single scene involving L eating that didn't get some rise of laughter out of the entire theater. The giant skewers filled with donuts - that got the most laughs. Seriously, I think that actor must have been so sick of sweets by the end of filming.
But with all things considered, I think the absolute best part of the entire night were a couple of scenes that really brought the audience together.
First, there was the scene in the movie where L was introduced for the first time - that slow pan-up from his feet to his face. The crowd just cheered. All at once, in unison, myself included. The moment was almost magical.
And then there were all the scenes introducing Matsuda. The audience kept calling out his name, laughing so hard at everything he did or said. And Misa Misa's face on the bus! It caused an uproar!
Oh, and that one scene where they opened up the L laptop for the first time, and I saw that it was a Mac Powerbook G4, just like the ones I use at work, and that he was running his surveillance system off of four, count them, four big G5 (or were they G4's...) towers! It gives new meaning to the phrase, 'L, did you know that Gods of Death love apples!!' Long live the Apple Store!! Oh wait, that one was just me... nevermind.
But the best scene of the entire movie was during the surveillance viewing scenes. L, still sitting in his usual crouched position and nibbling on his thumb, had drooped off to sleep in that very position. The chief walked by, and put a blanket over his shoulders. The entire audience gave a collective 'awwwww...' Now that time... it was magical.
But that's enough for tonight, or else my roommate will be reenacting that last scene with me. And unlike L, I'd probably fall over eventually. And crash into my Mac G5 tower... which means I would have failed in my goal to not accidentally break anything else today...
Hey, where'd my candy go?
