ローマ字の落とし穴 | Pitfalls of Rōmaji [04 Jun 2007|10:28am]

[ mood | amused ]

I don't know very much Japanese, but one thing I've always stuck by was learning the Japanese manner of writing. I've stayed clear of rōmaji. Here is an example of why I don't like rōmaji.

A person asks for a translation of the phrase "kono koi wa himitsu". What is my first instinct? I assume it's saying 「この鯉は秘密」! Or, "this fish is secret". LOL! In reality it was saying 「この恋は秘密」. Or, "this love is secret". Perhaps a more experienced person would know this, but I was oblivious until another reader pointed it out. That is why you don't want to become dependent on rōmaji.

new [04 Mar 2007|04:02pm]

Hello, I'm brand new and I've been trying to teach myself Japanese for a very long time. The only thing I'm having huge trouble with is I can't find a list or dictionary or the kanji, and I don't know how to put a sentence together, I've looked it up online and every website says something different. Along with I don't know how to do the verbs, like how in spanish you have er, ir, and ar verbs than have that crap you add on the end. Now if I could just learn all this stuff I'd be fine!! lol

My name is Theresa, I just completed Japanese 2 (High beggining Japanese) at a small community college in my town. I still feel so new to Japanese and still feel like I'm so bad at it. (-,-) Anyone else going through this? Who else here is still a newbie to Japanese?

Hello I'm new! [22 May 2003|09:22pm]

Hi! I'm from Singapore, and is a newbie at the Japanese language. Have taken one module of Japanese language when I was in Uni last year, and is trying to pick up the language where I left off. I can recognise hiragana, katakana and kanji, but I shld say my proficiency lies with hiragana. Vocab wise, I still quite limited, but I can do a short intro of myself in Japanese.

I'm planning to take my JLPT this year, but couldn't find much in the internet. Anybody in Singapore who has taken the test and can offer me some advise? :)

Hi! I'm new here. I've been studying Japanese for several years now, I can speak -somewhat- intelligible Japanese sentences, and I can write hiragana, katakana, and several hundred kanji. I hope to learn a lot more throughout college.

I'm also a big fan of anime, and J-pop ^_^ Ayumi Hamasaki, Morning Musume, etc.

Anyway, I have a question for other Japanese speakers/students here. How do I know when to use "ni" and when to use "e"? (I already know that time expressions take "ni")
For example, when saying "I go to town," is it machi ni ikimasu or machi e ikimasu? Or does it matter? Any help is appreciated.

Hi! [10 Apr 2003|09:26pm]

[ mood | cheerful ]

Just joined so I thought I'd drop in and say hello. I'm another lover of Japanese culture and language. Actually, I've always liked Asian cultures and languages but I have to admit that my preference is Japanese. I've taken a couple Japanese courses so I know a little bit of the language and culture but I always enjoy learning more.

Hmm, what else? Yeah, I'm interested in Japanese music, culture, anime, manga, history, art...some of everything. Ok, I admit though that the anime/manga and music are of pretty big interest to me though. I'm an anime/manga junkie, I admit it. =)

Anyway, nice to meet you all!
