I believe this because I know that Jesus died on the cross for all of my wrongdoing. My church has been a wonderful experience to help me believe the way I do today. Personally, I think a belief that centers around one phenomenon is a bit weak, but that's only a personal opinion. Your point about similar fallacies in Christianity, etc. is a little weak. Although the existence of God can also not be proven, at least there is a supposed point at which it becomes obvious: you die, go to heaven, and poof, now you know it's true. Reincarnation, on the other hand, is totally different. You die, you forget everything that ever happened, and you come back to life in a totally different body, depending on how you behaved in the previous one. At no point does the observer (dead or otherwise) get any confirmation to the beliefs, nor is there any relevance to life except for the whole "spirit" thing. Personally, I chose not to believe in anything that can't be supported by some sort of scientific argument. This includes pretty much every religion currently known. On the other hand, some of the smartest people I know are devout Christians, so there must be some draw to the belief system. I just haven't seen any evidence of it yet. 'why do people wear crosses around their necks? if jesus really did come back one day, i bet the last thing he'd want to see would be a cross.' ;) i'd like to believe in heaven because there arent many other clever ideas to believe in what happens after you die. reincarnation and karma are cool, but there is no promise of deja vu or anything. i have deja vu every now and then. no big deal.
