8:40 am - Blurty scripting issues
|
It certainly is glad to see that Blurty is back at almost full operation. Last night at about 12:10 a.m., the site starting loading slowly with very strange error messages everywhere. I bored with trying to update after about 45 minutes of the "black-out" and had begun to think that the mysterious OZ wizard who pays the server bill for this site had finally had enough and pulled the plug.
I am relieved to see that I was incorrect in that supposition.

10:50 am - Fight in my own front yard
|
Oh my, there are about 20-25 teenage boys rolling, tumbling, and having one major fight in my front yard. Every year the gypsies come into town and they always seem to bring out the worst in everyone. I expect the police to arrive any second now, and I hope to have my sense of peace and quietly shortly restored.

8:26 pm - Errors
|
So nice to have found out just as I was about to send the invitations out that "Thursday, August 24" is not on the calendar. Thursday is the 23rd, Friday is the 24th. Um.... I don't mind having to rewrite out invitations if it means saving face. However, I seriously have to purchase some more laid paper. My pack from Smoke and Fire is nearly gone!

11:21 pm - Invitations
|
I have spent the whole evening trying to quill out the invitations to the party next Thursday. There is no room for forgiveness when using a quill. If you misspell a word--start over with a clean sheet of laid paper. If you accidentally smudge it up--start over. If you let the ink in the cut nib run too low and you get little splatters on the page--start over. Ugh....
Then again, in this modern day and age of instant communication, it is nice to be so well thought of that someone took the time to spend two hours writing you a lovely handwritten invitation with a dipped quill and sealed with wax.

7:00 pm - Finals
|
I was took my Biology final today. I am sure that I have passed the course, but I won't know my final grade until a few day's time. I took my Art final just a few minutes ago. It was not proctored, so I could do it within the comforts of my home--thank you, online classes!
And now that I am free for two tiny weeks, I bet you're wondering how I will spend my time... I plan to finish sewing up a frock coat for Daddy. I had started it right before Biology, and that class was so demanding that I was unable to finish it. Maybe I can get it done now.

Woot-woot! I finally figured out how to add an additional table to the left of the page. It has taken a very long time of trial and error. Now I'll have a proper box for my (fiendish?) fandom thingies. Yay, me!

If I ever get through with this time-consuming Biology course, I have to sew-sew-sew! The party is will be here shortly, and I do not have Dad's frock coat finished. Between work, college, and local civic organizations, I am stretched so-o-o thin.

12:16 am - 18th Century Shorthand
|
Shorthand is a dying art. I was not taught it when I went to secretary training; however, an older co-worker of mine was taught it in the 1950s and still uses it. To me, it looks like a bunch of squiggles, but there is some method to that madness.
I came across an interesting site about 18th Century Shorthand. Apparently, Benjamin Franklin devised his own form of shorthand.

7:18 pm - Frock Coat
|
|
Behold, an artist's rendering of the Captain in his fancy Governor's clothes! And if you can bare to overlook the fact that the artist screwed up by having BOTH the Captain's ruffled shirt and cravat stick out (he never, never did this in any ORIGINAL painting that I have ever seen of him. He kept his ruffles, like his emotions, perfectly hidden away from the casual observer....) Inaccuracies aside.... isn't the sight of a frock in the national color just breathtaking?

I have ventured to tailor a coat just like the lovely one above for my dad. My wool has been patterned and cut, and now the exciting task of hand-sewing (you read that correctly, hand-sewing) the frock.
One front panel has had the interfacing and back side attached, and I have a couple pictures to share.

The pointy part at the top right of the picture is the lapel. I will try to post more pictures as I progress with this. Encouragement is always appreciated as it might help me not procrastinate.

5:59 pm - Not so Random Pretty Dress
|
|
This is not some random dress posted because it is pretty, though it be ever so pretty. This is, in fact, the inspiration for the dress I am going to wear to the Captain's birthday party this August. I'll share pictures of the new dress as soon as the dress is completed.

After going to great lengths to find 100% pure silk ribbon to use as a chemise drawstring, one should NEVER, and I repeat, NEVER use bleach in wash with said chemise.... the ribbon will turn a funky yellow color....

5:22 pm - Where's the Hand?
|
|
Presented for your approval is a hum-dinger of fashion plate. This image has not been altered or photoshopped in any manner; it is, in fact, exactly in the condition of which I first saw it. While the French are very progressive and open about things, I certainly hope the gentleman in this image is not doing what I *think* he might be engaged in.

I shall strive to put on my rose-colored spectacles and, henceforth, create a very explanatory story for this gentleman: He has hidden within the flaps of his fall-front pantaloons a bag of Lay's potato chips. And just like the Emperor before him who always kept a bag inside his coat... this gentleman simply cannot eat just one. He also has a CapriSun hidden in his hat.

11:24 pm - Merry Seamstress Tyme
|
|
Here's the finished Spenser that I wrote about last October. It is a navy blue wool with frog closures. The band on each the cuff did end up being eliminated simply because the wool was too thick to turn for bands; however, I am quite pleased with the finished product.
The front (with a dress underneath):

Detail of the back:

And next, here's the chemise shift that I hand-sewed all by my little lonesome. I made it out of a nice white linen, and although the color is slightly off in the pictures, it is snow white. The actual stitching didn't take that long--about a week's worth of evenings.

Detail of the underarm gusset:

And finally.... this isn't exactly seamstry, but I am quite proud of my latest paint job. I hand-painted this wooden canteen. Although you cannot tell from the photo, it took a lot of patience to keep from getting paint all over the metal bands on the edges. I am quite proud of it, especially the initials "U.S." I bought it to drag along on my rambles through the Park and came close to just staining it, but then I decided to paint it up so that Capt. Daddy could use it on living history events instead of dragging around his anachronistic glass coke bottle.

I am now in the process of sewing a blue (national color) frock for Dad. It should be quite nice when I complete itânavy wool with big brass buttons. At least I can get away with snurching in my sewing while volunteering at the museum this month. Early pioneer women often occupied their time with sewing, you know.

11:05 pm - My Celebrity Look-a-likes
|
I've been hearing a lot of buzz about the website My Heritage lately, so I thought I would check it out. Basically, a man in Israel has come up with a novel way of doing geneological searches. Instead of looking through old records, you can search for people with similar facial features. Currently this option is available only for celebrity comparisons. When you upload a photo, the computer scans it using the same kind of technology that they use to scan crowds for terrorists at ball games and airports. It looks for similar structures and reports back which celebrities share your features. Well, a lot of people say I look like someone else such as Julia Roberts, Shania Twain, Sandra Bullock, Jessica Alba, etc. So I thought I'd see if the computer agrees. I tried more than one photo to see what the results would be--and some are shocking to me. Anna Nicole Smith? I don't look like her. Norma Shearer and Shirley Temple came up in more than one--I like them so that's okay. Why don't you try it out for yourself and let me know what celebrities you look like!

I must say that this is one of the weirdest liquor commericals that I've ever seen. It's a Ruddles Ale comercial from 1993. Too bad they don't make commericals this interesting here in America.

And if that doesn't get your head shaking, then this syncronized ballet definately will!
