We've been exposed to the tumultous lives of celebrities with the advent of showbiz-oriented talk shows. There are shows like TMZ that run after celebrities as they dine out, do their laundry, all those stuff. They feature them on their bad angles and agitate them. We laugh or scorn them when they display bad behaviors.

Before we adored holywood and local stars, people were just enthralled with the lives of the high society. The rich members of the upper echelon. In England, subject of gossips are the queens, kings, lords, dukes to name a few.

Lady G

Who can forget Princess Diana who was married to the Prince of Wales. She died a tragic death with her boyfriend in Paris while running away from the paparazzi. Who would have thinked that her life can be parallel to one of her relatives, the Duchess of Devonshire.

Keira Knightley plays Georgina Cavendish who was married to William Cavendish, 5th Duke of Devonshire. Her mom wants the best for her child which is a good end but the means she took to get it was rather questionable. She sold her daughter to Duke William (Ralph Fiennes). A marriage of convenience would make this brilliant lady miserable.

All that is important for her husband is to produce a male heir. She was given all the luxury she wants but left on her device. Bored out of her wits, she amuses herself with social gatherings and gambling. They say that all London is in love with the Duchess except her own husband. In a vacation, she met Lady Elizabeth Foster and developed a fondness of her. Under the protection of the Duchess, she didn't realize that Lady Elizabeth slept with her husband.

She pursues a love affair with Charles Grey who would later on be Prime Minister. With her popularity, she campaigned for the ambitious Charles as a member of the parliament. Their dalliance bore fruit and a scandal broke out in London's high society. The duke asked her off to the country while she's carrying the child and was asked to turn over her baby to the Greys.

Living it up can be glamorous but there's a price to pay. In the end, she died penniless because of her gambling problems. Despite having rich relations, the duchess accumulated so much debt that she was not able to pay.
