Dame Judi Dench is a spinster or a singleton as Bridget Jones puts it. She is like Mrs. Tingle (remember the the scary teen movie by Katie Holmes) but she's worse. Barbara Covett is a boring history teacher that you just love to hate. She's lonely and miserable that people from school fear her that much. Like the old maid, she lives with her pet cat.
On the contrary, there's this new Art teacher played by Cate Blanchett. She is Bathsheba Hart. An artist and a mother, she decided to pursue a new carreer path as a teacher in downtown London. Barbara describes her as somewhat absent. There's this spaced out look in her eyes. Almost everyone was drawn to her especially Steven Connelly.
Illicit love affair between a middle-aged woman with marital problems and a hot teenage boy with an Irish accent. This was the secet that bound these two women. Just when you thought that Barbara was Miss Prudence, you will discover that she also holds a dark past.
The plot is simple but it takes brilliance to portray the characters in the big screen. Excellent performance by the lead actresses and the supporting actors. I have never seen Bill Nighy in a drama. He is intense. The young Irish lad that had an affair with Cate in this movie is a revelation. He played someone so seductive and sexy despite his very young age.
If you want to watch something heavy this weekend, I recommend this film. |
