: The Nature of Jade
TEEN
Many people on ADBOOKS were impressed with this book, and I am certainly glad they brought it to my attention! Being someone who is sometimes called "Worst Case Scenario Girl," I really related a lot to Jade and her anxiety issues. People who enjoyed reading about Ruby Oliver (in The Boyfriend List by E. Lockhart) will surely like this book as well.
As readers are introduced to Jade, we see that she has anxiety problems. I'm not talking typical "teen angst," but certifiable -- having panic attacks -- anxiety issues. Jade often watches the elephants of her local zoo (via webcam) when the stresses of high school come crashing down on her. After a while, she decides to volunteer at the zoo, with the elephants, and this helps her anxiety even more. On the webcam, and during her time at the zoo, she begins to notice a boy in a red jacket. This boy does not seem much older than her, but he has a baby. His own? A nephew? She decides to be brave and to introduce herself, but will it pay off? Or will she just have one more embarrassment to add to the list?
Every chapter starts off with a quote from a book entitled The Fundamentals of Animal Behavior. I am not sure whether the title truly exists or if that content was made up as well. (I think I need to look into that!) Anyhow... These anecdotal stories about animals give some insight into the human condition, and they prepare you for the situations Jade will face in the following chapter.
A great read for people with anxiety issues or who just love to read about animals.
Happy Reading!
